Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24:, 1905.
Application filed March 2, 1905. Serial No. 248,139,
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known thatl, THEODORE F. ODELL, a
, citizen of the United States residing at Nyack,
in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Constructions; and T do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fireproof constructions,
The object of the invention is to provide a light strong durable water and fire proof material suitable for building construction.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the arrangement of the invention in the form of matched boards, parts of the same being broken away to disclose the construction thereof. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view through a board, showing a modified construction and arrangement of the parts.
lln the drawings T have shown the invention in the form of matched or tongue-and-groove stufi constructed of paper-board.
in forming the sections or boards sheets or bars 1 of suitable size and shape are provided. Said boards each are formed or made up of layers of paper-board riveted or otherwise secured together to form on one edge thereof a tongue 2 and on the other edge a groove 3. The paper-board before being arranged as described is treated with a fireproof solution, and after the same is formed or arranged as described is painted on both sides with a fire and water proof paint, which serves to protect and preserve the fireproof solution to which the paper-board has been previously treated and also prevents the same from taking up moisture after being combined. This coating of paint also prevents shrinkage of the boards.
After the boards have been formed as described a sheet of canvas, muslin, or other suitable fabric Pie cemented to the upper side of the same. Before said canvas is applied to the boards the same is treated with fireproof solution, and after the same has been cemented to the boards with a suitable layer, as shown at 6.
paste it is given one or more coats of water and fire proof paint.
A building material constructed and arranged as herein shown and described may be used to form sidings, partitions, or roofing and will be found advantageous in many forms of building construction in which a light strong fire and water proof material is desired.
in Fig. 3 is shown a modified construction and arrangement of the board. in this instance the layers of paper-board are arranged to form a lap-joint construction, which is accomplished by forming the upper and lower layers wider than the intermediate layer and arranging the same so that the upper layer will project beyond one side of theintermediate layer, as shown at 5, and the lower layer beyond the opposite edge of the intermediate The construction of this form of board is otherwise the same as shown in the previous figures.
While I have shown and described the material as being constructed in two forms, it is obvious that the same may be constructed in any other suitable form in which ordinary lumber is made' if desired, the boards after being arranged together may be stitched or riveted to hold the same in place.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resortedto without departing from the principle or sacrificing anyof the advantages of this invention.
'Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A building material formed of paperboard treated with a fireproof composition and coated with a fire and water proof paint, and a fabric applied thereto, said fabric being also treated with a fireproof composition and coated with a fire and water proof paint, substantially as described.
2. A building material formed of layers of paper-board treated with a fireproof composition, and a fire and water proof paint, means whereby said layers are secured together, a fabric cemented to said boards, said fabric being also treated with a fireproof solution, and
having applied theretoa coat of fire and water proof paint, substantially as described.
3. A building material formed of layers of paper-board treated with a fireproof composition and a fire and Water proof paint, means whereby said layers are secured together to form matched or tongue-and-groove boards, and a fabric covering cemented on said boards, said covering having been treated with a fire- IO proof solution and having applied thereto a fire and Water proof paint, substantially as THEODORE F. ODELL.
