Be it known thatI, ALBERT C. S. RUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northwood, in the county of Worth and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carrier-Transferring Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of conveying apparatus ordinarily consisting of an elevated track or tracks upon which carriers are adapted to travel back and forth.

The invention aims to provide a simple means for transferring a carrier from one track of a system of tracks to another.

For a full description of the invention and, the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the embodiment of the invention in actual use. Fig. 2 is a plan view, the bar being shown in relative position by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the movable bar alone.

in carrying out the invention two tracks 1 are illustrated, and these tracks extend from a suitable support, which may consist of a barn or the like should the conveying apparatus be used for farm purposes.

The tracks 1 are usually made of wire and are substantially connected with the support before mentioned, which is indicated at 2. The ends of the tracks 1 opposite the ends connected with the support 2 may be secured to uprights 3, suitably braced, as at 4. The

carrier is indicated at 5 and may be of any type which is now commonly in use within the contemplation of the invention, and this carrier is adapted to be bodily lifted from a track over which it may be traveling and transferred to an adjacent track should such a transfer be desirablein the actual operation of the conveying apparatus. The carrier, it

may be stated, is preferably of that construction in which the same may be dumped automatically when it reaches an ascertained point in its travel.

The transferring device by which a carrier is conveyed from one track to another consists mainly of a transversely-swinging bar 6, pivoted at one end to the support 2 or a similar support and mounted for movement between two adjacent tracks 1. The bar 6 is carried by a pivot member 8, which forms the pivotal support thereof, and this bar is preferably inclined downwardly somewhat toward its outer end. A plate 9 is secured to the upper pivoted end of the bar 6, and said plate is provided with an opening receiving the pivot member 8 aforesaid. The outer end of the bar 6is provided with an engaging member 10, consisting, preferably, of a plate attached to the bar by suitable fastenings, an end portion of said plate projecting some distance beyond the end of the bar 6 in order that it may be readily engaged with the earrier in the transferring operation. An opening in the engaging member 10 admits of passage of an eyebolt 11 therethrough, and the eye of said bolt is connected with the lower end of a brace device 12, preferably consisting of a brace-wire or like support. The wire 12 is attached to the barn or whatever the support carrying the bar 6 may be at its upper end, and the brace device admits of transverse movement of the bar 6 in a manner readily apparent. The bar 6 is preferably pivoted at a point about intermediate the tracks 2, between which it operates, and is of a length sufficient to admit of disposition of the engaging member 10 thereof against an ascertained track when the invention is being used.

Describing the operation of the invention, when it is desired to transfer a carrier from one track to another the lower outer end of the bar 6 is thrown into such a position that the engaging member 10 is in the path of travel of the carrier 5, which may be operating over one of the tracks. The carriers 5 which are ordinarily employed are provided with bails which have a trolley attached thereto adapted to move along the track. When the bar 6is thrown into the position above mentioned, the engaging member 10 is adapted to engage the hail of the carrier 5, whereupon the track may be disengaged from the trolley of the carrier by pulling the wire downwardly, if necessary, and then the bar 6 is swung laterally, so that the carrier is now supported entirely thereby. When the bar 6 has moved into a position in which its engaging member is adjacent the next adjacent track, this track may be engaged with the trolley of the carrier, and the bar 6 may now be swung away from the carrier, so as to leave the same mounted upon the new track, over which it will travel as desired by the operator.
