UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GERALD EDWARD HOLLAND AND HENRY JOHNSTON, OF RANGOON, INDIA, ASSIGNORS TO THE HOLLAND JOHNSTON PATENTS LIMITED,
OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
FREIGHT-CARRYING SHIP OR VESSEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1805.
Application filed October 27,1903. Serial No. 178,774;-
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GERALD EDWARD HoL- LAND flIlCl HENRY JOHNSTON, subjects of the King of England, and residents of Rangoon, India, have invented certain new and useful Innprovements in Freight-Carrying Ships or Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a construction of the holdof a ship for carrying coal, ore, grain, or the like whereby the quantity of material in the hold is always known and the unloading of the ship is greatly facilitated.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, Fig. 2 a transverse sec tion, and Fig. 3 adeck plan, of part of a ship constructed according to this invention.
The coal is stored in compartments a of definite capacity cut off by sliding doors 6 from a central fore-and-aft passage 0. These doors I) slide in slots 0', formed in the bottom of the passage 0, and are raised and lowered by means of a rod Z, having a screw-threaded end which engages with a screw-threaded block on, secured to the doors 6. A hand-wheel a is fixed on the upper end of the rod Z. An endless valve or conveyer cl, traversing the central passage 0, under which is an inclosed trough 0 traversed by the lower band of the conveyer cl, delivers the coal to the bottom of a conveyer e, which delivers it overboard or as may be desired.
The compartments (0 are provided with movable floors and sides f, hinged at g, which can be raised as desired to deliver the coal through the doors 6 to the trough 0 by means of hy draulic rams it, working in hydraulic cylinders 2'. Each compartment is covered by removable hatches In for loading purposes and is provided with a suitable scale, which shows the quantity of coal left in a compartment when the coal has been trimmed on the top.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, We declare that What we claim is# In a ship which has its hold divided longitudinally by a central passage, an inclosed trough extending below said passage and lengthwise thereof, compartments on either side of the walls of said passage having floors above the level of the floor of said trough and hinged along their edges adjacent thereto, said floors having back portions rigidly secured thereto and extending vertically through part of the height of the compartment, said floors and back portions being adapted to be turned about their hinges by means located under the floors and means enabling said compartments to communicate with and be shutoff from said trough, substantially as described.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
GERALD EDWARD HOLLAND. HENRY JOHNSTON.
