Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
A li ati fil d June 5,1905. Serial No. 263,814.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl. FRED A. Gun 1511), a citizen of the United States, residing at Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in school-desks.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the pens, pencils, ruler, and ink used by the occupants of the desk may be kept and protected from accumulation of dust.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the desk, showing the application of the invention, the parts being shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the parts in open position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the desk, the parts being shown in open position. Fig. iisavertical longitudinal sectional view through the same, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing a modified arrangement of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the desk, which is here Shown as consisting of a body portion 2, having a bottom 3, an inclined top a, and a rear end 5, said rear end being extended downwardly be low the body portion of the desk to form the back of a seat 6, which is hingedly connected to the desk 1, as shown. The body portion of the desk is adapted to be supported upon legs of any suitable construction. The seat6, connected to said desk, is for the use of the desk immediately in front of the desk 1.
In the top of the desk, adjacent to the front edge of the same, is formed a rectangularlyshaped opening 7, in which is arranged a countersunk receptacle or box 9, said receptacle being preferably divided into compartments to receive pens, penholders, pencils, ruler, ink-well, Sac.
lrlingedly connected to the top of the desk by means of a pivot-pin 10 is a cover 1.2,which is adapted to be turned down upon the receptacle or box 9 to close the same. The pivotpin 10 is rigidly secured to the cover 12 and is extended at one end of the same to near the end of the desk, where said pin is bent or has formed thereon a right-angularly-projecting crank-arm 13, said arm being adapted to extend downwardly through a slot 14 formed in the top of the desk and to lie within the desk adjacent to the end of the same.
Pivotally connected to the free end of the crank-arm 13 is the upper end of an operatingrod 15, the lower end of said rod being pivotally connected to the rearwardlyprojecting end of a bracket-arm 16, secured to the under side of the seat 6 at the rear edge of the same, whereby when said seat is raised or lowered the operating-rod 15 will be united to close and open the cover 12. The angle of the cranked arm 13 with respect to the cover 12 is such that the raising of the seat 6 will close said cover tightly upon the receptacle or box 9 and when said seat is lowered will raise the cover sufficiently to permit access to said reccptacle.
In addition to the cover 12 a second cover 17 may be provided for the receptacle 9, if so desired, said second cover being hingedly connected to the inside of the box in any suitable manner to close within the same. The position of said inner cover when closed is such that the same will not interfere with the closing of the outer cover 12. The inner cover 17 is adapted to be opened and closed by the occupants of the desk, so that the receptacle may be covered at will when the seat on the front of the desk is occupied, the cover 17 being hinged independently of the outer cover.
By the use of a receptacle and cover such as herein shown and described the writing implements of a desk may be kept free from dust occurring from the sweeping of the. room or other causes, the receptacle being automatically closed by the raising of the seats, which is done before the room is swept.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a-more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An attachment for desks comprising-a receptacle arranged therein, a cover for said receptacle, and means whereby said cover is closed and opened by the raising and lowering of the seat connected to said desk, substantially as described.
2. An attachment for desks comprisingare ceptacle arranged therein, a hinged cover for said receptacle, and an operating-rod connected to said cover and to the seat on said desk whereby said cover is closed and opened by the raising and lowering of said seat, substantially as described.
3. An attachment for desks comprising a receptacle arranged therein, said receptacle having compartments adapted to contain pens, pencils, an ink-well, &c., ahinged cover adapted to open and close said receptacle, acranked extension formed on the pivot-pin of said cover, an adjustable operating-rod connected to said cranked extension and to the seat on said desk whereby when said seat is raised or lowered, said cover will be closed or opened, substantially as described.
4:. An attachment for desks comprising a receptacle arranged therein, said receptacle having compartments adapted to contain pens, pencils, an ink-well, &c., an outer hinged automatically-operated cover, and an inner hinged directly-operating cover, said covers being adapted to close said receptacle, a
cranked extension formed on the end of the V nesses.
