WIRE-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.

Be it known that we, FRANCIS W. BosT and JAMES W. BoLEN,citizens of the United States, residingat Chinagrove,in the county of Rowan and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Wire-Stretcher; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of thev invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a wire-stretcher; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means whereby the wire of a barb-wire fence can be tightened to a great advantage.
More especially, the invention provides a standard having legs projecting therefrom and a bracket-arm at the upper end, and between said arm and the upper portion of the standard is a drum adapted to revolve for the purpose of stretching the wires of a barb-Wire fence. Furthermore,the standard is provided with hook-and-chain devices whereby the standard can be held rigid While the wire of theClarb-wire fence is being stretched or tightene The invention consists in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the figures of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, such figures of reference indicating' like parts in the views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved wire-stretcher,showing the same ready for use. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail sectional views of the clenching device. Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the wire-stretcher. Fig. 5 is a plan view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by iigures, 1 designates a standard composed of legs 2 and 3, which are adapt-v ed to be driven into a post to hold said standard substantially in a horizontal position. Projecting from one face of said standard is a horizontal portion 4:, said portion forming the base of a horizontally-disposed connecting portion 5 to correspond with the face of the standard 1, and disposed between said horizontal portion 5 and the face of the standard 1 is a revolving drum 6, having iianges 7 circumferentially around said drum, one of said flanges being formed with ratchet-teeth 8, which are adapted to be engaged bya pawl 9, which is pivotally mounted on the horizontal portion 5. Said revolving drum is provided with a shaft 10 and a crank 11, whereby said drum may be rotated for the purpose of tightening the wire of the barb-wire fence. Said drum is provided with an eye 12 upon the circumference of the body portion 13 of the drum, and attached to said eye is a wire cable 111, said cable being wound upon said drum.
A clenching device 15 is provided for the purpose of clenching the end of the wire of the barb-wire fence in order to tighten said wire, said device being composed of abase portion 16, which is provided with a verticallydisposed ear 17, which is provided with an aperture 18, adapted to receive a pivotal pin 19. Said pin pivotally carries the clenching-jaw 20, said jaw being provided withaiiange 21, which is adapted to engage frictionally with the side of the base portion 16. Said clenching-jaw is also eccentrically mounted upon' said pivotal pin and is provided with a plurality of bitingteeth 22, which are adapted to clench the end of the wire of the barb-wire fence as the clenching-jaw is pressed. At the end of s aid base portion an eye Q3 is provided for the purpose of attaching the clenching device to the wire cable 14. Said standard is also provided with chain-and-hook devices 24e, whereby the standard is prevented from falling when the revolving drum is rotated for the purpose of stretching the wire. Said chain-andhook devices are composed of a chain portion 25 and a hook 26, said hook being provided with a shank 27, the end of which is provided with a spike 28, which is adapted to be driven into a fence-post or the like, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
To allow the drum to be readily removed and a different one inserted, slots 29 are provided in the sides of the standard 1 and the horizontally-disposed portion 5, said slots being provided for the purpose of receiving the shaft of the drum. To securely hold said shaft of the drum in position in the slots, pivotally-mounted latches 80 are provided, which are pivot-ally mounted, respectively, upon the standard 1 and the horizontally-disposed portion 5, said latches being adapted to swing in front of the shaft of the drum to prevent the said shaft from being removed.
Thus it will be seen how the wire-stretcher is erected in position for stretching wires of any description from reference being had to the different igures of the drawings inconnection with the detailed description of the same.
Of course it is distinctly understood that various changes in the detailed construction and operation of the device can be readily made, if desired, without in any way depart-v ing from the spirit and scope of the invention,
What we claim isl. A wire-stretcher comprising a frame, upper and lower inclined legs,said legs adapted to be driven into the post of a fence, and braces adapted to engage opposite sidesvoil said post, substantially as described;

In a wire-stretcher, the combination of a frame, a drum mounted on said frame and provided with ratchet-teeth, a pawl adapted to engage said ratchet-teeth, legs formed integral with said frame and adapted t0 be driven into a fence-post, chain-and-hook devices adapted to engage opposite sides of said fence-post, substantially as described.

A wire-stretcher comprising a horizontally-disposed frame, upper and lower inclined legs, said legs being adapted to be driven into a vertical support, braces adapted to engage opposite sides of said support, a drum mounted on a rotating shaft, latches adapted to lock or release said shaft, a clenching device, having a flexible connection connected with said drum, and means for rotating said drum, substanti-ally as described.
4I. A wire-stretcher, comprising' a frame,
legs adapted to be driven into a support, and braces adapted to engage opposite sides of said support substantially as described.
