Be it known that I, \VILLIAn DRAKE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bradford, in the county of Mc Kean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Brake Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air-brakes, and more particularly to that class which operates automatically to prevent the collision of cars in case a train should break or separate.
It is an object of this invention to provide novel means whereby when the train breaks the air sets the brakes on the separated cars and stops them, the forward part of the train being permitted to proceed without interruption.
Furthermore, an object of this invention is to produce a device of the character noted which will prove efiicient and satisfactory in use and comparatively inexpensive to produce and maintain.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in both views, in which Figure l is a view in perspective illustrating the coupled ends of two cars, the invention being applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of a detail of the invention.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a forward car of a train, and 2 a rear car, both being coupled together by an ordinary J anney type of coupling 3.
5 indicates the pipe-line of the brakes provided with the ordinary flexible connection or coupling 6. The line 5 is provided with a valve 7, operated by the lever or angle-bar 8.
Carried by the end of the car 2 is a staple 9, to which is secured an end of alight chain 10, which is provided intermediate its length with a weak link 11 of any preferred or ordinary construction, as its detail forms no part of this invention.
Attached to a corner of the car 1 is a depending bracket 12, which terminates in an eye 13, through which the chain 10 passes, the end of the chain being attached to the anglebar 8.
When the connection between the cars breaks, the chain is drawn taut, pulls back the lever or angle-bar 8, closes the valve 7, and prevents the escape of air from the forward part of the train and no wise interferes with its travel. At the same time the air is permitted to escape from the separated portion of the train, and the brakes set, as will be fully appreciated by those skilled in the art.
As the forward portion of the train proceeds the strain on the chain will cause said chain to break at its weak link. It is to be stated that the weak link 11 is to be of such strength as to withstand the pull required to operate the lever 8.
In practice it may prove that the pull of the chain 10 on the lever 8 will be such as to prove injurious to the same. To overcome this, the chain 11 is provided with an enlarged link 1%, larger than the eye, that the link Will be arrested by the bracket when a pull is on the chain. By this arrangement the pull on the chain after the valve'7 is closed will be between the bracket 12 and the separated car. It is to be stated that the link 14 is positioned a distance from the bracket when the valve is in its normal or open position equal to the movement necessary to close such valve.
Although an enlarged link is shown, any means may be employed to limit the movement of the chain through the eye in one direction, as in practice this proves an important and essential feature of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the opposing ends of cars connected with an air-line, a valve for the air-line carried by one of the cars, an operating means for the valve, a bracket arranged to one side of the valve, and a connection secured at one end to the opposing car and passing through the bracket and having its opposite end secured to the operating means of the valve.
2. In combination with the opposing ends of cars connected with an air-line, a valve for the air-line carried by one of the cars, an operating means for the valve, a bracket arranged to one side of the valve, a connection secured at one end to the opposing car and passing through the bracket and having its opposing end secured to the operating means of the valve, and means carried by the connection for limiting its movement through the bracket in one direction.
3. In combination with the opposing ends of cars connected with an air-line, asuitablyoperated valve carried by one of the cars, a
, supporting means arranged adjacent the valve,
and a connection between the remaining car and the operating means of the valve, said connection passing through the supporting means.
4. In combination with the opposing ends of cars connected with an air-line, a suitably.- operated valve carried by one of the cars for the air-line, a bracket depending from the car adjacent the valve, said bracket terminating in an eye, and a weakened chain, said chain belng secured at one end to the remaining car tion passing through the supporting means, and means for limiting a movement of the connecting means through the supporting means in one direction.
6. In combination With the opposing ends of cars connected with an air-line, a suitablyoperated valve carried by one of the cars for the air-line, a bracket depending from the car adjacent the valve, said bracket terminating in an eye, a weakened chain secured at one end to the remaining car and passing through the eye of the bracket and being secured at its opposite end to the operating means of the valve, and an enlarged link carried by the chain, said link being of such size as to be obstructed by the eye of the bolt.
