Be it known that I, RAoUL PRUGGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 'Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Conductor-Terminals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to terminal pieces for electrical conductors; and ithas for its object to provide terminal pieces for connecting electrical conductors together that shall be of such form and construction that many variations in the manner of making the connections are permitted and which possess other desirable features not heretofore embodied in devices employed for this purpose.
Although my invention is capable of very general application, it was first applied to series and compound Wound motors and generators and Will generally be found most useful in connection with such machines.
The terminals of the armature and series field-magnet windings of electric motors and generators are generally secured to conveniently-located terminal blocks, an armature and a field terminal being secured to each block. If the machineis operated without the series winding, the circuit connections are made directly to the armature-terminals at the terminal blocks; but if the series winding is employed the armature and field terminals which are secured to one block are connected together and the circuit connections made to the terminals which are secured to the other block. If two or more generators are operated in parallel, an equalizing connection is made to the armature and field terminals which are connected together.
My invention provides means whereby these connections may be conveniently made by the employment of a minimum number of parts differing in structure.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of terminal pieces constructed in accordance therewith as employed for the purpose of making circuit connections. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of my invention as arranged in Fig. 1, a portion of the motor-frame being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation of my invention as employed for the purpose of connecting together the terminals of the armature and field-magnet windings, and Fig. 4 illustrates my invention as employed for the purpose of making equalizing connections between two or more electrical machines.
Leads 1 and 2, projecting,respectively, from the armature and field-magnet windings of an electrical machine (not shown) are provided with terminal pieces 3 and 4, the ends of the cable-leads 1 and 2 being inserted into the ends of the terminal pieces and soldered or otherwise secured therein. are clamped with their axes approximately parallel between blocks 5 and 6, the projecting ends 7 and 8 of the terminal pieces being of smaller diameter than the portions which surround the ends of the cable-leads. Mounted upon the smaller ends 7 and 8 of the terminal pieces 3 and L are split sleeves 9 and 10 of exactly similar construction, having onlarged portions 11 cast integral therewith, which are provided with contact-faces 12, the planes of which are parallel to the axes of the terminal pieces 3 and i. Holes 13 are drilled through the enlarged portions of the sleeves, the axes of which are approximately at right angles to the axes of the terminal pieces 3 and 1.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown terminal pieces 13 and 14:, which are respectively provided with faces 15 and 16, that are clai'nped to the contact-faces 12 by means of bolts 17 and 18. The bolts 17 and 18 serve also to clamp the split sleeves 9 and 10 to the ends 7 and 8 of the terminal pieces 3 and e. The terminal pieces 13 and 1 1 are adapted to receive the ends of cable-leads, (not shown,) which constitute means for making circuit connections with the machine.
If it is desired to connect together terminals of the armature and field-magnet windings, the split sleeves 9 and 10 should be rotated into the positions shown in Fig. 3 and a bridgepiece 19 inserted between the opposing faces 12. A single bolt 20 passes through the holes 13 of both sleeves 9 and 10 and through the bridge-piece 19 and serves to clamp the bridgepiece 19 between the faces 12 and to clamp the sleeves 9 and 10 upon the ends 7and 8 of the terminal pieces 3 and 1.
If an equalizing connection is to be made The terminal pieces between two or more electrical machines, the bridge-piece 19 (shown in Fig. 3) may be replaced by a bridge-piece 21 of the form of the terminals 13 and 14. (Shown in Fig. 1.)
WVhile I have shown my invention as applied to the terminals of electrical machines, it is to be understood that it is capable of more general application when conditions perm The form and arrangement of the details of my invention may be varied from what is shown and described without departing from its scope.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a terminal, a split sleeve having a contact-face, a second terminal having a similar contact-face, and means for clamping the two faces together and the split sleeve upon the first terminal.
2. The combination of a terminal, a split sleeve having a contact-face and a hole at right angles to the face, a second terminal having a similar contact-face and a corresponding hole, and a bolt located in said holes and serving to clamp the second terminal to the split sleeve and the sleeve to the first terminal.
3. The combination of a terminal, a split sleeve having a contact-face, a second terminal having a similar contact-face, and a bolt passing through the said second terminal and the split sleeve for clamping the two contact-faces together and for clamping the split sleeve upon the first terminal.
4. The combination of a terminal, a split sleeve having a plane contact-face parallel to the axis of the terminal and having a hole at right angles to the axis ofthe terminal, a second terminal having a plane contact-face and a hole, and a bolt for clamping the contactfaces together and the sleeve to the first terminal.
5. The combination of terminals having parallel axes, split sleeves mounted thereon having opposing contact-faces, a detachable terminal having contact-faces, and means for clamping the said terminal faces to said splitsleeve faces and for clamping the split sleeves upon the first-named terminals.
6. Thecombinationofterminals having parallel axes, split sleeves that are mounted thereon and are provided with opposing contactfaces, a detachable terminal having contactfaces, and a bolt passing through the said sleeves and said detachable terminal.
7. The combination of terminals having parallel axes, split sleeves that are mounted thereon and are provided with opposing contactfaces, a detachable terminal having contactof said sleeves and for clamping the split sleeves upon the first-named terminals.
8. The combination of terminals having parallel axes, split sleeves that are mounted thereon and are provided with opposing contactfaces, a detachable terminal having contactfaces, and means for clamping the detachable Azerminal between the split-sleeve contact-faces and the sleeves upon the first-named terminals.
9. The combination of terminals having parallel axes, split sleeves that are mounted thereon and are provided with opposing contactfaces, the planes of the faces being parallel to the axes of the said terminals, a detachable terminal having contact-faces, and a bolt passing through the contact-faces of said sleeves and said detachable terminal at right angles thereto. l
10. The combination of terminals, split sleeves mounted thereon having opposing contact-faces, a bridge-piece, and means for clamping the bridge-piece between opposing contact-faces and for clamping the split sleeves on the said terminals.
11. The combination of terminals having parallel axes, split sleeves mounted thereon having opposing contact-faces, a bridge-piece and a bolt passing through said sleeves and said bridge-piece.
12. The combination with a terminal, of a sleeve mounted on said terminal and having a contactface, a detachable terminal having a contact-face, and means for clamping said contact-faces together.
13. The combination with a terminal, of a sleeve adjustably mounted thereon and provided with a contactface, a detachable terminal having a contact-face, and means for clamping said contact-faces together and the sleeve to the first-named terminal.
14:. The combination of terminals, sleeves mounted thereon having opposing contactfaces, a bridge-piece, and means for clamping the bridgepiece between opposing contact'faces and for clamping the sleeves on the said terminals.
15. The combination of terminals having parallel axes, sleeves mounted thereon having opposing contact-faces, a bridge-piece and a bolt passing through said sleeves and said bridge-piece.
