BUILDING-BLOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
:Patented Oct. 3, 1905.
Application filed June 3,1905. Serial No. 263,597.
Ie it known that I, ANDnnw l. UooLinGn, a citizen ol the United States, residing at llelena, in the county of Phillips and State oft Arkansas, have invented new and useful improvements in Building-Blocks, of which the following' is a specilication.
My invention consists of twenty-two geometrically-shaped blocks for the purpose of building' words, figures, and sentences. T hese blocks may be termed "educational blocks,
and they serve the double purpose of aiding the child to construct and learn its letters and figures and as it advances to construct words and sentences. These twenty-two blocks are all the blocks that are necessary to be used in the construction oi any letter or figure in the lilnglish language, I do not mean to say that the twenty-two blocks of themselves will be sufficient to construct the entire alphabet at one time; butl mean to say that itis only necessary to have the twenty two shapes shown in the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the shapes of the twenty-two blocks. Fig. Z shows the alphabet and the characters &, S, l, and figures from 1 to 9, inclusive.
The said twenty-two blocks are lettered, as shown in Fig. l, the first block being lettered fr, the next then follows c, (l, @,f, la., Z', m, n, o, 7i, q, o', s, t, w, fr, w, m, y, s, respectively.
In making up the block letters, characters, and figures, as shown in Fig. 2, A B C l) E F G H lJKLll/INOPQRSTUV VVXYZ 8: lf 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, building only three or four letters at a time, it is only necessary te have blocks made as follows: Two et' e, one ot 7;, two of c, one of (Z, two of a, two ot' f, four of 71., four of 'r, one of m, four of n, two of o, two of p, one of q, one ot'- fr, one of a, one of 1T, one of u, two of e, one of fw, four oi' f/f, two of y, one of s, making; a total of forty-two in all, and in making the set for the market I usually make that number of blocks. because with these blocks and that number thereof the entire alphabet, characters, and figures shown in Fig. 2 mayv be made; butif it is desirable to have the whole alphabet, characters, and figures produced at l once the number of blocks must be increased accordingly. For instance, the block f/ will be used in B DE F ll Al l( L N l) Ylt lf ft," the block will be used in l L rl l, block will be used in "J U, block l in li T," block in "D E F Y R Y O, block y" in C .l li Q, 2 5, block z, in B l.) E l? I t Q 5,- block 1 in A M V lV, block 'm in "Af block yn in B I) R S & $2 3 5 (i S fl, block n in l) 3 6 9, block 7i in C (i .l O QU 9, block q in G Q, block 'r in Q, block .i in K 4, bleek in KP block 'u irl-"N,77 block v in It Z & 7, block fw in "S 2 5, block '.1' in "X Y, block 1/ in Z T, block in 2% 1. This, however, does not include the entire scope in my invention. I can make sevl eral small letters by the use ol' the abovev blocks, also several unique and odd figures or representations. For instance, I can make the small letter b by the use ol blocks f, y, q, e. To form the small letter d, the same blocks are used, but simply turned over. To form the small letter 1; use blocksl and /A The blocks used in my invention, as shown in Fig. 1, are geometrically described as l'ollows: Blocks a, 7), c, d, e, f, z, are rectangular oblong blocks, l. and in are rhomboidshaped blocks with one corner cut away, wl, s, and are frustums of pyramids, s and I', however, are not resting on their bases, n and p are semicireles, fr is an irregular block representingthe tail of a QP u and if are rhomboids, w is an S-shaped block, and 1/ and are trapezoids.
Havingdescribed my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A set of geometrically-shaped blocks, seven of which, a, 7;, c, (Z, i, I, are rect-:ur gular oblong blocks; two et' which and .1, are rhomboid-shaped blocks with one corner cut away; three ot' which, 'm7, A', t, are lrnsturns of pyramids; two of which, yn and j), are semicireles; two of which, fand q, quarter-circles; one ol which, fr', is an irregular \block representing the tail of a QE two /f and fo, are rhomboids; one of which, w', is an S-shaped block, and two of which, l/ and are trapezoids, said blocks adapted to be arranged so as to form any of the bloclclettcrs ol' tln` English alphabet, together with the stnntnlly as `hown and (loscrilml :xml lor the elnrrnf-lers, "&, ll, :unl ligures 1,2, 3, 4, purposes set forth.
