BRAKE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Sept; 26, 1905.
' Application filed January 9, 1905. erial No. 240.341.
To all whom, it may concern: v
Be it known that I, J nssE S. CLARK, a citi zen of theUnited States, residing at Middleton, in the county of Canyon and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Hangers, of which the toward the wheels of the vehicle, but so .tion applied to a wagon.
mounted as to reinforce the beam against any lateral swinging movement with reference to the'wheels.
The invention further aims to secure a device which may be manufactured at a comparatively cheap cost and which is so simple that it may be readily applied by a person having average mechanical skill.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings. I
While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is an end view showing the inven- Fig. 2 is aside elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the parts comprising the hanger alone.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The invention is shown applied to a common construction of wagon consisting of the usual box 1, carried by the bolster 2, the latter being mounted upon an axle 3, provided 7', and a diagonally-disposed arm 7".
with the usual ground-wheels l. The brake- 5 beam is indicated at 5 and may be of any substantialtype desired for the purposes of the invention, said beam 5 being provided with brake-shoes 6, adapted to effect braking action by contact with the wheels 1 in the ordinary manner.
The hanger which comprises the invention is preferably supported by the box or body 1 of the wagon, and two of these hangers are utilized to support a single brake-beam '5. Each hanger isof peculiar formation, consisting of a link 7 of triangular formation, embodying a vertical arm 7?, a horizontal z ijrfin e arm 7 is bent laterally from the plane of the 5 arms 7 and 7 to form at its point of juncture with the arm 7 an eye or loop 8. The loop 8 is adapted to receive a hook 9, which is suitably attached to a side of the box or body 1 of the wagon in order to suspend the hanger 7 0 and the beam attachedthereto in proper position. One of the hooks 9 is applied to the wagon-bed l at each sidethereof, and each hook supports a hanger 7, before premised. The hanger 7 is attached to the brake-beam5 by means of eyebolts 10, provided with nuts 1 11 at the lower extremities. The eyes 12 of the bolts 10 receive the lowermost arm 7 of. the link 7 in order that the eyebolts may not have any lateral play or movement. Said arm 7 of the link 7 is deflected downwardly atits ends, as shown at 13, to form seats whichreceive the eyes of the bolts 10 and effectively accomplish the purpose desired. The shanks of the eyebolts 10 pass through the brake- 5 beam 5, and though the beam 5 is adapted for free swinging movement toward and from the Wheels t the construction of the members7 is such that the beam is positively held from any lateral shifting or swinging movement. 99v Thus the hangers 7 always hold the brakebeam 5 in line with the wheels 4:, this being of no small advantage in this class of device.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new-is In combination, the wagon-bed 1, the brakebeam 5, the hooks 9 secured to opposite sides of the wagon-bed 1, the hangers 7 comprising links of approximately triangular formation, each of said links consisting of the vertical arm 7 the horizontal arm 7 and the (lingonal arm 7, the vertical arm 7 being bent from the arm 7 c at its upper end so as to form the eye or loop 8, the horizontal arm 7 of each link beingclefleoted downwardly near its ends to form seats, the eyebolts 10 passing through the beam and having the eyes thereof reeei red in the seats in the lower arm 7" of each link. 10
In testimony whereof I nili x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
