Description

'PATENTED SEPT. 19, 1905.
APPLIGATION FILED JAN. 23. 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY C. AYRES, OF GREENVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE ADJUSTABLE FIXTURE AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF GREENVILLE, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR COILJNG AND UNCOILING ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
Application filed January 23,1905. Serial No. 242,424.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. AYREs, acitizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-ofiice address is Greenville, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Device for Coiling and Uncoiling Electrical Conductors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is for the purpose of making a supply of electricity portable, and relates especially to the manner in which the surplus conductors necessary for this are cared for without having sliding contacts.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention? Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a central sectional view through the drum.
A is the containing frame, which is equipped with a threaded studB for the purpose of connecting a stem or flange for its support. I
O is a spindle extending through frame A and fastened to it by pins D.
E isadrum mounted loosely upon the spindle O and attached to it by the spring F, thus allowing drum E to revolve forward and backward around spindle C so far as spring F will allow and a tendency to return to its original position being given by spring F.
The drum E consists of a cylindrical rim G with sides H fastened to it and containing the spring F. Inside the sides H extend beyond the rim G, forming flanges to prevent the conductors from getting ofi its surface.
Upon the drum E are coiled the electrical conductors, the portable ends protruding through frame A at point I, the length of conductors being variable within a rangelimited by the length of the conductors Wrapped on drum E.
The non-portable ends of the conductors, or those that remain stationary on drum E, are brought out through flanges of sides H at points K, either one on each side or both on one side, and from there pass loosely around spindle O as many times as it is necessary for drum E to revolve forward and around spindle O and sufficient slack so that the revolving of the drum may be free the conductors pass through the frame at points L, thence along frame, and through holes M, and thence to supply conductors by this course they avoid interference with the workings of drum E. I
I am aware that drums actuated by springs for the purpose of coiling conductors have been previously used, and therefore do not claim such combination broadly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a yoke provided with arms and having a cross-piece connecting the upper ends of said arms, the ends of said crosspiece having apertures in their projecting ends, astationary shaft mounted in said yoke, a spring actuated drum journaled on said shaft and having a grooved circumference, the flange of which groove is apertured, a conductor-wire winding about said drum and having strands which pass through said drum and designed to Wind about said shaft, and passing through apertures in the projecting ends of said cross-piece, as set forth.
