Description
PATENTED SBPTJQ H. WITTE. sAsH FASTBNBR.
APPLICATION FILED APB.. 2.1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUBERT WITTE, S'I. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO ST. LOUIS CAR COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
SASH-FASTENER.
Specification ofLettei-s Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
Applicatin filed April 2, 1904. Serial No. 201,334.
, ments in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a fastener for securing window-sashes in any position to which they may be moved, the device being particularly intended for use in holding street-car windows in a closed position.
The object of my improvement is to provide a fastener that can only be operated by a key, thereby preventing passengers in a car from opening the'window thereof without the authority of the car conductor, who holds a suitable key for operating the fasteners.
, The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a view showing a portion of a window and sash therein with my improved fastener shown applied-thereto. Fig. II is a front perspective view of my fastener. Fig. III is a rear View of the fastener with the back plate removed. Fig. IV is a vertical section taken on line IV IV, Fig. III. Fig. V is a horizontal section taken on line V V, Fig. III. Fig'. VI is a perspective View of the key-receiving bolt-actuating rocker.
A and A designate the uprights of a window-frame, and B and B the stiles of a sash. Upon the sash-stile B', I preferably place a sash-fastener C of any ordinary construction, provided with a finger-piece D, by which the bolt of the fastener is actuated.
Applied to the window-frame upright A is a keeper l.
2 is a case that is provided with ears 3, containing screw-holes 4, through which screws may be introduced into the sash-stile B to secure said case thereto. Projecting from the inner edge of the case 2 is a lift-arm 5, which may be grasped to raise the window-sash when the bolt in the case 2 and the fastener C are freed from engagement with the windowframe uprights.
6 designates a slide-bolt in the case 2, that is adapted to be projected into the keeper 1, as seen in Fig. I. This slide-bolt is provided with a longitudinal groove 7, (see Fig. V,) that receives the ends of a friction-spring 8, by which the bolt is held from movement when set into either a projected or unprojected position. In the slide-bolt is a notch 9.
l() is a rocker that is provided with gudgeons l1 and 12, that seat, respectively, in the front of the case 2 and in a back plate 13, set into the rear of the case 2, as seen in Figs. II, IV, and V. The arms of the rocker l0 are of unequal length, and the long arm of the rocker has a reduced end portion, forming a linger 10a, that enters into the notch 9 in the slidebolt 6. In the rocker-gudgeon Il is a keyseat Il, into which a suitable key may be introduced to actuate the rocker. When the key is so introduced, the rocker may be thrown in either direction forwardly or backwardly in engagement with the slide-bolt within the notch' 9, thereby projecting the bolt either into the keeper l or withdrawing it therefrom. The movementof the short arm of the rocker is limited by the end wall of the case.
I claim as my invention- In a sash-fastenenthe combination of a case, a slide-bolt mounted in said case, said slide-bolt being provided with a longitudinal groove in one of its sides and having a vertical notch in its other side, a friction-spring arranged in said groove and engaging the side wall of the case, a substantially V-shaped rocker provided with a pair of gudgeons mounted in opposite sides of said c ase, one of said gudgeons being provided with a key-seat; the arms of said rocker being of unequal length; the slide-bolt and one of the end walls of the case limiting the movement of the short armof the rocker, and the long arm of the rocker having a reduced end portion forming a finger extending upwardly into the notch of the bolt to engage said bolt, substantially as set forth.
HUBERT WITTE In presence of- ARTHUR DIEKMANN, MoLLEY C. MURPHY.
