. mixture so that it explodes before the motorpiston reaches dead-center. If this device is accidentally left in working position, the motor will kick back and start to run backward instead of forward.
It is a main object of my invention to provide in connection with the spring-actuated starting device a simple means for disposing working parts of the device so as to prevent the above -mentioned danger of kicking back.
I willdescribe a motor-starter embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a motorstarter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of certain parts in reverse position to that of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a plan view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a substantially rectangular frame mounted to swing on a fixed support 2. As here shown, a stud 3 extends from the frame and has bearing in said support. frame 1 has an upwardly-extended lever 4, and connected to the side members of the frame above the fulcrum-lug 3 is a shaft 5, on which is mounted'to rotate a spring-drum 6, and in this spring-drum is a coiled spring 7, one end of which is attached to the drum and the other end is attached to the fixed shaft 5. Attached to one side of the spring-drum is a gear-wheel 8, designed at a certain time to be placed in mesh with a driving-gear 9, which is designed to have connection with the motor-shaft. On the shaft 10 is a pinion 12, designed to be placed at a certain time in driving connection-with gear-teeth 13 on the periphery of the spring-drum through the medium of a pinion 14:, carried by an arm 15, extended from the lower end of the frame 1. Also on the periphery of the spring-drum are ratchetteeth'16, designed to be engaged by a pawl 17 for holding the spring in wound position. This pawl is'carried by the upper portion of the swinging frame 1 and is held yieldingly in engagement with the ratchet-teeth by means of a spring 18, attached to the frame and bearing on an arm 19, extended upward and rearward from the pawl. The under side of this arm '19 is designed to be engaged by a hori- Zontally-disposed portion 20, having a triplever 21 for moving said pawl out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth at a certain time. This lever 21 is held yieldingly in position by means of a spring 22.
Attached to a spider 23, secured to, the outer side of the spring-drum, is a pinion 24, meshing with a gear-wheel 25, having its shaft bearing in the outer member of the frame 1, and on the outer end of this shaft is a pinion 26, meshing with a trip gear-wheel 27, mounted to rotate on a stud extended outward from the outer member of said frame 1. Arranged diametrically opposite on this trip-wheel are radially-disposed arms 28 29, and these arms, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, are curved slightly outward.
Extended over the spring-drum and rigidly attached to the support 2 is a curved bar 30, with the end 31 of which the hook end of a dog 32 is designed to engage, and a similar curved dog 33 is designed for engagement yielding trip-arm 39, designed to engage against the inner side of the dog 33 and by an outward movement to release this dog from the end 34 of the bar 30 to permit the. frame 1 to swing in a direction to release the gear 8 from the gear 9, and thus throw the spring 7 out of connection with the engineshaft 10. The arm 39 has an outwardly-curved end for engaging with the arm 28, which will swing the arm 39 outward.
By the rocking motion of the device it may be placed in any one of three positions: first, out of connection with the shaft 10, so that the wheels 9 and 12 run idle; second, by pushing the lever 4 to the right the dog 32 catches over the lip 31 and holds the gear-wheels 12, 14:, and 13 in mesh to wind up the spring and the arm 28 comes around and releases the dog 32 and the starter is drawn to first position by a coiled spring 4:; third, when the lever 4 is thrown to the left and the wheels 8 and 9 are put in mesh and the dog 33 catches over the lip 34: for starting the motor as soon as the lever 21 is pulled to release the pawl 17 and free the drum 6 and spring 7. The arm 29 then comes around as the spring is run down and releases the dog 38.
A great advantage of my invention resides in the fact that the lever 21 is so placed that no matter how it may be pulled it will not release the pawl 17 except in the one position where the wheels 8 and 9 are in mesh, and no harm can come to the spring.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a motor-starter, a swinging frame, a lever extended from said frame, a fixed shaft in the frame above the pivotal point of the frame, a spring-drum mounted to rotate on said shaft, a spring in the drum having connection at one end with the drum and at the other end with the shaft, a gear-wheel adapted for connection with the motor-shaft, a pinion on the shaft of said gear-wheel, gear-teeth on the periphery of the spring-drum, a gearwheel carried by said spring-drum and adapted for engagement with the first-named gearwheel, a pinion carried by the frame and engaging with the gear-teeth on the drum and adapted for engagement with the pinion on the shaft of the first-named gear-wheel, oppositely-extended dogs carried bythe swinging frame, fixed parts with which said dogs are designed to engage, and means operated from the spring-drum for releasing the said dogs.
2. In a motor-starter, a swinging frame, a spring-drum mounted to rotate in said frame,
gear-teeth on the periphery of said drum, ratchet-teeth on the periphery of said drum, a gear-wheel on one side of the drum, a gearwheel adapted for connection with the motorshaft and with which the first-named gearwheel is designed to engage, a pinion carried with said motor-shaft, a gear-wheel, a pinion carried by the frame for placing the said firstnamed pinion in driving connection with the teeth on the drum, a pawl carried by the frame for engaging with the ratchet-teeth on the drum, oppositely extended spring pressed dogs carried by the swinging frame, fixed parts with which said dogs are designed to engage, a spring-yielding arm for engaging against the inner side of one of said dogs, and means operating from the spring-drum for actuating said arm to move the dog out of engagement with its fixed part.
3. In a motor-starter, a swinging frame, a spring-actuated drum mounted to rotate in said frame, gear-teeth on said drum, ratchetteeth on the periphery of said drum, a gearwheel adapted for connection with the motors'haft and having driving connection with the spring-drum, a pinion on the shaft of said gear-wheel, a pinion carried by the swinging frame for placing said pinion in driving connection with the teeth on the drum, a pawl for engaging with the ratchet-teeth on the drum, means for moving the pawl out of engagement with said teeth, oppositely-extended springpressed dogs carried by the swinging frame, fixed parts with which said dogs are designed to engage, outwardly-extended curved fingers on said dogs, a spring-yielding arm for engaging with one of said dogs, a trip-wheel operated from the spring-drum, and opposite outward projections on said trip-wheel for engaging with fingers of the dogs and also for engaging with said spring-yielding arm for forcing the dog engaged thereby, outward.
