MACHINE-WRENCH.
No. 799,228. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed April 20, 1905. Serial No. 256,638.
To all whom it may cmuwvr: l form, and said end has its edge beveled, as
Be it known that I, TILLIAM ELMER ETTER, l shown at 10, to permit the socket to be readily 5 acitizen of theUnitedStates, residingatBower engaged with the nut when the latter is partly Mills, in the county of Lawrence and State of or wholly embedded in the felly F of the 5 Missouri, have invented certain new and usewheel. In order to protect the felly from ful Improvements in Machine-\Vrenches; and being marred by the device, the portion I of I do declare the following to be a full, clear, the frame is formed with inwardly-projectand exact description of the invention, such ing right-angularly-shaped bracket-arms 11, as will enable others skilled in the art to which which are disposed above and below the int it appertains to make and use the same. ner end of the wrench-shaft and which have My invention relates to improvements in their-inner faces covered with a cushion 12, of machine-wrenches of the bolt-holding gearleather or the like, which is adapted to con- 5 operating type; and it consists of certain tact with the inner face of the felly. These novel features of construction, combination, cushion arms or brackets 11 not only protect 5 and arrangement of parts hereinafter dethe felly from being scratched or marred, but scribed and claimed. also assist in steadying the frame 2 upon the The object of the invention is to provide a wheel. The frame is further steadied upon .simple, comparatively inexpensive, durable, the wheel and prevented from slipping by the and eflicient device or machine of this charprovision of a bar 13, which has at its ends 20 acter which is particularly adapted for use in set-screws 14, adapted to engage the side applying and removing nuts to and from the edges of the tire T. This bar 13 is slidably tire-bolts of vehicle-wheels. mounted upon the sleeve 3 and is adjustably The above and other objects which will apsecured thereon by means of a set-screw l5. pear as the nature of my invention is better The adjusting-screws or set-screws 14 are pro- 5 understood are accomplished by the construcvided in threaded openings in the projecting tion illustrated in the accompanying drawends or arms of said bar, and they may be ings, in which adjusted according to the thickness or size of F1gure 1 is a side elevation showing the the wheel. application of my invention to a portion of a Upon the outer end of the wrench-shaft 6 o vehicle-wheel. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of is swivoled a handpiece or grip 16, by means the same. "Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse secof which the frame may be readily handled tional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2 and supported. This handpicce 16 comprises 5 and looking in the direction indicated by the a circular block 17, which has secured upon arrow, and Fig. 4c is a vertical longitudinal its inner face by means of screws 18 a disk 19.
35 sectional view taken on the line 4 4 in Fig. .2. The swivoled connection of the handpiece to Referring to the drawings by numerals and the shaft 6 is preferably effected by heading, letters, 1 denotes my improved machineas shown at 120, the inner reduced end 21 of 9 wrench, which,as seen inFig.1ofthedrawings, said shaft, which projects through a central is applied toaportion ofa wheel \V,comprising opening formed in the disk 19. The shaft 6 4 a felly F and a tire T, secured upon said felly rotates freely in the bearing-openings 7 and by tire-bolts B and nuts I. The device 1 is a is also adapted to slide therethrough and combined holder and machine-wrench, and it through a gear wheel or pinion 20, which is comprisesa suitable frame orsupport 2,which, disposed between the doubled or bent portion as shown, consists of a hollow body or sleeve 8 of the arm 4 of the "frame 2. The gear 20,
45 3, having adjacent to its opposite ends prohowever, is keyed, as shown at 21, upon said jecting arms or portions 4 and 5, which are shaft, so as to rotate with the same and at adapted to receive a wheel-rim between them. the same time to permit the shaft to move or In the portion 4: of the frame is mounted a slide longitudinally as the nut in its inner wrench-shaft 6, which extends through alinend or socket 9 is unscrewed from its bolt.
5 ing bearing-openings '7 formed in the outer The gear 20 meshes with a similar gear 22 end of said portion4, which is bent upon itself, upon one end of a shaft 23. This shaft exas shown at 8. Said shaft 6 has in its inner tends through and rotates in the sleeve 3 and 5 end a nut-socket 9 of square or polygonal has on its opposite end an operating crankhandle 24, by means of which the socket-shaft 6 may be rotated by reason of the meshing gear 20 and 22.
In order to hold the tire-bolts while their nuts are being applied or removed, I provide in the arm or portion 5 of the frame 2 a sliding bolt-clamp 25. This clamp comprises a rod 26, which is slidahly mounted in an inwardly-projecting socket 27, formed in the portion or arm 5. Said rod 26 consists of an outer cylindrical portion 28 and an inner reduced square or polygonal-shaped portion 29, which terminates in a beveled end or point 30, adapted to engage the end or the notch in the end of a bolt or screw. The squared portion 29 of the rod slides through a similarshaped opening at the inner end of the socket 27, and surrounding said portion is a coilspring 31, which is confined between the enlarged portion 28 of said rod and one end of said socket, so as to exert its energy to move or slide the rod 26 outwardly. The said rod is moved inwardly against the tension of said spring and held in engagement with a bolt or screw by means of a spiral-shaped cam 32, which is provided upon the inner face of a disk 33, mounted to rotate upon the sleeve 3. This disk is confined between the end 28 of the rod 26 and an integral arm or bracket 34, which is provided upon the outer end of the portion 5 of the frame, so that when said disk is oscillated by means of the handle 36, provided upon it, the spiral cam 32 will engage and operate the clamping-rod 26, as will be readily understood.
The construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be seen that the machine may be readily applied to or removed from a vehiclewheel and that it may be quickly adjusted for wheels of any size. When it is mounted upon a wheel, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the operating-crank is turned in one direction or the other, the nut will be applied to or removed from the bolt according to the direction of rotation of the wrench-socket.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment'of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction herein set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
A bolt-holding machine-wrench comprising a sleeve, a pair of arms disposed opposite each other and secured to the sleeve, a longitudinally-movable wrench-shaft having its bearings in one of said arms, a gear splined on the wrench-shaft, and bearing against the outer side of said arm. the latter having a device to prevent outward movement of the said gear on the said shaft, a longitudinally-movable, non-revoluble clamping-rod mounted in the other arm, a bracket extending outwardly from said arm and terminating at a point opposite and spaced from the clamping-rod, a
spring to press the clamping-rod outwardly, a shaft revoluble in said sleeve, a gear on said shaft engaging the first-mentioned gear, and a revoluble cam mounted on said shaft, hearing against the stop formed by the bracket and having on its inner side a concentric wedge-face engaging the outer end of the clamping-rod, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM ELMER ETTER. Witnesses:
