Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. SHAFER, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented a newT and useful Improvement in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to steam-generators ot' the combined tire and water tube class adapted for the use ot' tire-engines and for other purposes; and the objects ot' my improvement are to provide a series et' independently-dctachable units ot' g'eneration each having interior and exterior channels forming cycles ot' circulation, the latte'r channels being helical in form to secure the maximum heating-surtaee and to maintain the direction of circulation; to superheat the steam by contact with the ilues in its discharge from the generating units; to permit the discharge of water from the units only in the form ot' steam, and in the construction and assemblage of parts to maintain simplicity with maximum ehciency and to `facilitate the removal of parts tor repairs. These objects are attained in the following-described manner, as illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, in which Figure 1 is avertical diametrical section ot' a steam-generator embodying my improvement; Fig. 2, an elevation with parts in section of portions of a generating unit, showing its connection with the crown-sheet and waterleg of the generator; Fig. 3, a plan of the crown-sheet, and Fig. 4 an inverted plan of the lower header of a generating' unit.
In the drawings, represents the outside shell of a vertical cylindrical generator or boiler, 6 the head, 7 the inside shell, 8 the crown-sheet, 9 the water-leg, 11 the {ire-box, 1Q the steam-chamber, 13 a horizontal partition therein, 14. the steam-supply pipe, 15 the ilues or tire-tubes secured in the head and crown-sheet and passing loosely throug'h openings in the partition, and 16 the smoke-hood, all constructed and arranged in the ordinary manner.
A series of generating units 17, depending within the tire-box from the crown-sheet, communicate with the water-leg through respective supply-pipes 18 and with the steam-chamber through respective nozzles 19, which are formed with lateral discharge-openings 21 above the water-line Q2. Said units each consists of hollow top and bottom headers 23 and 24, connected together by axial tube 25, and
The top headers are each formed with arecess 31, encircled by collar 32, wherein the axial tube terminates, and with threaded sleeve S3, wherein the nozzle is secured and which is removably secured within an opening' 34, formed in the crown-sheet. The lower end of said sleeve terminates within the ccntral chamber near recess 31. The bottom headers are each removably secured to a co1'- responding supply-pipe 18 by means ot' an angular' titting 35, which is formed with opening' 36, provided with removable plug 37 in registration with the axial tube. Iipes 38, attached to plugs 3T, are extended through the corresponding axial tubes concentric therewith and encircled bythe respective annular channel 39. Said pipes are each formed with lateral discharge-openings Ll in its lower portion, and they terminate in fianged mouths 4Q within the respective recesses 31.
.In operation the greater length and position et' exposure ot' the helices to the tire cause them to generate steam more rapidly than do the axial tubes, whereby primary cycles of generation therethrough from the water-leg to the steam-chamber are automatically maintained. The pipes within the axial tubes be ing protected thereby from direct contact with the fire form descending passages for the water from the top to the bottom headers, whence it ascends again through the annular channels, whereby secondary cycles of generation are automatically maintained. The steam from the series of units is discharged by the nozzles in contact with the fire-tubes within the steam-chamber, whence it passes through openings in the partition to the supply-pipe.
The units are separately removable to facilitate repairs or substitution by others.
Having fully described my improvement, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a steam-generator, a top header arranged to detachably engage with the crownsheet and provided with a vertical nozzle having lateral discharge-openings, a bottom header, and a helical tube extending between the headers.
2. In a steam-generator, the combination of a top header arranged to detachably engage with the crown-sheet, a bottom header provided with a supply-pipe, and a series of tubular helices forming channels of communication between the headers said helices being' concentric with a common axis and parallel with each other.
3. In a steam-generator, a unit of generation consisting of a top header provided with a discharge-nozzle and arranged to detachably engage with the crown-sheet a bottom header, and an axial and a helical tube connecting them together for the purpose specified.
4. A steam-generator having in combination a top header arranged to detachably engage with the crown-sheet and provided with a vertical nozzle having lateral discharge-openings, a bottom header, and a series of tubular helices forming channels of communication between the headers.
5. Inasteam-generator, a unit of generation consisting of a top header provided with a vertical nozzle having lateral discharge-openings, a bottom header provided with a supply-pipe, an axial tube forming a descending channel, and a series of tubular helices concentric therewith forming ascending channels, of Communication between the headers.`
6. In a steam-generator, a series of independent units of generation each arranged to detachably depend from the crown-sheet and within the lire-box and consisting' of a top header provided with apvertical discharge-nozzle, a bottom header provided with a supplypipe, and communicating therewith through a straight axial tube and through a series of helical tubes concentric therewith and equidistant from each other.
7. In a steam-generator, a unit of generation,consisting of top and bottom headers communicating through an axial tube, a pipe extending therethrough and a tubular helix.
8. Inasteam-generator, adet'aohable unit of circulation consisting of a top header, a discharge-nozzle extending therefrom, a bottom header, a supply-pipe leading thereto, said headers being in communication through an axial tube, a pipe therein, and aseries of parallel tubular helices which encircle the axial tube without contact therewith or with each other.
9. In a steam-generator, a series of independent generating' units arranged to detachably engage with and depend from the crownsheet, and each consisting of a top and a bottom header respectively provided with a Vertical discharge-nozzle and with a supply-pipe and communicating through concentric straight tubes registering with the nozzle and through parallel helical tubes concentric with the straight tubes.
10. -In a steam-generator, concentric vertical tubes communicating With top and bottom headers and a vertical discharge-nozzle in registration therewith.
11. In a steam-generator, a unit of generation consisting of top and bottom headers com? municating through an axial tube, a pipe therein and tubular helices encircling said axial tub'e.
