Be it known that I, CLAUDE EDWIN M awr- ZER, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Albert Lea, in the county of Freeborn 3 and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive Draw-Bars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement 3 in draw-bars for locomotives; and the object of the invention is the provision of a drawbar of this type which can be raised to an op erative or coupling position or lowered into line with the face of the pilot, so as not to ini terfere with the etfectiveness of the pilot.
A further object of the invention is the provision of fluid-actuated means whereby the so that none of the weight thereof will be borne by the pilot, and so that the pilot may be removed without removing the coupler or portions z, wlnch are adapted when the levers any of the parts thereof.

The draw-bar l) is operated by a piston F, working in an air-cylimler F, secured at any suitable point to the under side of the locomotive in rear of the pilot.

The drawbar 1) will then be in its coupling position, and the weight of the draw-bar will be borne by the bar (2. To move the draw-bar l) to its lowermost position, the link 1 is moved rearwardly. The first movement of the link will cause the lovers to straighten out and raise the hooked portions oil of the bar w, and continned movement causes the levers to knuckle rearwardly and the draw-bar D to be lowered into the cut-away portion 7) of the tender B.
The forward and rear ends of the cylinder F are connected by pipesf andf with a valvecasing K in the engine-cab. The valve-casing K is provided with a cylindrical central bore in which works a rotary valve L and with four equidistant ports K K K K, communicating with said central bore. The pipesf and f are connected to the ports K and K. The port K* is an exhaust-port, and the port K communicates by a pipe on with a compressedair reservoir M. The valve L is provided with two ports Z and Z, extending through the body thereof. The port Z serves to connect the air-pipe M with either the pipe f or f to cause air to flow to the front or rear part of the cylinder, according as it is desired to raise orlower the draw-bar D, while the port Z serves to connect either of said pipesf andf with the exhaust-port K, so that when air is being furnished to one end of the cylinder it is being exhausted from the opposite end.
The coupler-head 0 on the draw-bar D is provided with a locking member 0. The locking member 0 may be of any suitable construction; but in the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings I have shown it as a reciprocating member sliding on an inclined portion 0 formed in the couplerhead 0, with antifriction-rollers c interposed between said memberand the inclined portion. The upper end of the locking member 0 projects without the upper face of the coupler-head c and is pivotally connected to the forward end of a link '22 the rear end of which is pivotally connected to the cranked portion of an operating-rod N, which is rotatably mounted on the upper face of the pilotbeam B. The operating-rod N extends substantially the entire length of the pilot-beam and is provided atits ends with operatinghandles N, by which it may be rocked to withdraw the locking member 0. To provide means for withdrawing the locking member from the cab, an air-cylinder O is secured in any suitable manner to the locomotive-frame in rear of the draw-bar D, in which is adapted to move a piston O. The piston O is provided with a piston-rod 0, which projects through the front head of the cylinder 0 and has its forward end pivotally connected by means of a link 0 to the cranked portion of the operating-rod N. The pistonis normally held against the forward head of the cylinder 0 by means of a spring interposed between the rear face of the piston and the rear head of the cylinder. The forward end of the cylinder is connected by an air-pipe p with a valve-casing P, secured in the engine-cab. The valve-casing P is provided with a cylindrical bore, in which works a rotary valve R, and with three equidistant ports 39, p and 5 p communicating with said bore.
The port has a pipe connection with the air-reservoir M, the port 39 is connected to the pipe 1), and the port 22 is an exhaust-port. The valve R is provided with a channel a" in the body thereof, which serves to connect either the air-reservoir M with the cylinder O or the cylinder 0 with the exhaust-port 39 The valve is also provided with a suitable operating-handle. Under normal conditions the valve is turned so that its channel connects the pipe 99, running from the front end of the cylinder O, with the exhaust-port 19 The piston 0 will then be forced to the forward part. of the cylinder and the locking member 0 will be held in its locking position. When it is desired to withdraw the locking member 0, the valve R is turned until the channel 9* therein connects the ports p and 19 when air will flow from the air-reservoir M into the forward part of the cylinder, forcing the piston 0 back to the rear end of the cylinder against the tension of the spring 0 and with it the piston-rod 0, which, through its connection with the operating-rod N, withdraws the locking member 0. As soon, however, as the valve R is returned to its initial position the air in the front portion of the cylinder will pass through pipe 19, channel 9', and exhaust-port p and the piston will be returned by its spring 0 to its normal'position, thereby returning the locking member 0' to its locking position.
In Fig. 4 is shown a modified form of the invention, in which the draw-bar and its operating mechanism are supported independently of the pilot, so that none of the weight of said draw-bar will be borne thereby and so that the pilot may at any time be removed from the pilot-beam without removing the draw-bar or any of the actuating mechanism therefor. The construction shown in this form is similar to that shown in the other figures of the drawings, with the exception that the bearing-plate J instead of being supported upon the heel of the pilot is suspended by braces S S and T T, which have their upper ends secured, respectively, to the front and rear portions of the plates E E.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form and construction shown in the drawings, as it is obvious that many minor changes might be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention.

1. In alocomotive-coupling, apivoted drawbar, a coupler-head carried by said draw-bar, a locking member within said coupler-head, fluid-actuated mechanism for raising and lowering the draw-bar, fluid-actuated mechanism for operating the locking member, and means located within the engine-cab for controlling the supply of fluid to said fluid-actuated mechanisms.

In a device of the character described, a relatively stationary support, a d raw-bar pivotally supporteil above said support, togglelinks interposed between the d raw-bar and the stationary support, a cross-bar secured in t'ront of said toggle-links, and a hooked portion secured to one of said links and adapted to engage said cross-bar and hold the drawbar in its elevated position when the links are forced beyond their alined position.
.In a loconiotive-coupler, a pilot-beam, a pilot secured thereto provided with acentral cut-away portion, a clip secured to the pilotbeam and provided with a pair of plates extending downwardly and 't'orwardly into the cut-way portion of the said pilot, a draw-bar pivotally .Jcured to said clip and adapted to swing downwardly between said plates, a cross-bar secured between the lower ends of said plates, a bearing suspended from said plates, toggle-links interposed between the drawbar and the bearing, one of said togglelinks being provided with a downwardly-extending hooked portion adapted to engage the cross-bar between the plates and support the draw-lair in its elevated position when the toggle-links are moved beyond their alined position, and means for actuating the togglelinks.
13. In a locomotive-coupler,a pivoted drawbar, a coupler-head carried by said draw-bar, a locking member for said coupler-head, a controller member. and means independent of automatically operable upon the actuation of the controller member for operating said locking member.

In a locomotive-coupler, a relatively stationary support, a drawbar pivotally supported above said support, toggledinks interposed between the draw-bar and the stationary support, a lixed stop for limiting the forward movement of the toggle-links and supporting the drawbar in its elevated position, and means for actuating the toggle-links.

In a locomotive-coupler, a relatively stationary support, a drawbar pivotally supported above said support, toggle-links interposed between the draw-bar and the stationary support, a lixed stop for limiting the for- Ward movement of the toggle-links and supporting the draw-bar in its elevated position, and automatic means for actuating the togglelinks.
