UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\YILLIAM PERSON, OF ROL IQFORI), ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALFRED U. ABRAMSON, OF ROFKFORI), ILLINOIS.
SEWING-MACHINE CABINET.
To (t/l w/mint it III/III] (o/merit.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAu Innsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, I
in the county of "innebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-)Iaehine Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sewing-machine cabinets in which the platform supporting the sewing-machine head is raised and lowered by the opening and 010s ing movements of the cover.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the woodwork of a sewing-machine cabinet. Fig. iis a vertical lengthwise section in which the platform is raised and the cover open. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on dotted line (1, Fig. 2, in which the platform is raised. Fig. l is a similar section in which the platform is lowered. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lifting-lever arrangement.
The woodwork of the sewing-machine cabinet shown in the drawings is of an old construction, comprising the top 1, frame 2, platform 3, hinged to the frame, platform extension hinged to the platform, cover 5, hinged to the end of the frame, a back 6, and ends '7. To the back 6 are secured two open brackets 8, supporting a rod 9 in a manner that the rod may oscillate therein. A bracket 10 embraces the rod and is secured to the back of the cabinet. From the ends of the rod extend two arms 11 and 12, to which are pivotally connected the links 13. The free ends of the links are pivotally connected to the under side of the platform, thereby forming a link connection between the platform and back. To the back is pivotally mounted a roller 1%. From the rod 9 extends two arms 15 and 16, between the free ends of which is pivoted a bar 17, having its free end forked, between the forks of which is pivoted a roller 18. The forked end of this bar extends rearward in order that the roller 18 may rest in contact with the back of the cabinet. A chain 19 has one end connected to the under side of the cover, passing thence over the pulley 1a, and its other end adjustably connected to the arm 17 in order that the distance between the roller 18 and pulley 14: may be varied.
\Yith the parts in the position shown at Fig. 3 the platform is held elevated, and when the parts are in the position shown at Fig. a the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 21. 1905. Serial No. 246.793.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
platform is lowered in order that the sewingmachine head supported by the platform may be lowered within the cabinet.
By the opening movement of the cover and through the chain connection with the arm 17 the rod is oscillated, which will straighten the link connection between the rod and platform, thereby raising the platform and hold ing it elevated, which will present the sowing-machine head in working position. Upon closing the cover the weight of the sewingmachine head supported upon the platform will cause the platform to be lowered into such position that when the cover is closed the sewing-machine head will be located beneath it. In the movements of the rod 9 the roller will bear against the back of the cabinet, which forms a track for the roller. By this arrangement the roller 18 will travel a short distance during the opening and closing movements of the cover.
I. have shown the bar 17 pivoted between two arms extending from the rod 9 and located near the lengthwise center of the rod; but, if preferred, the arm 11 may take the place of the arm 15 when the bar is located at that end of the rod without departing from the scope of my invention, or, if preferred, the bar 1'7 can be located at the other end of the rod or at any point, so long as it has a like connection with the head. To the bar 17 is secured a Ilat spring .20, its free end extending over the arm 16.
\Vhen the cover is closed and the platform lowered, the spring 20 will hold the roller 18 in contact with the back 6 of the cabinet when there is slack in the chain 19.
It is evident that the roller may be omitted and the end of the bar supporting the roller rounded and located to bear against the rear wall of the cabinet.
I claim as my invention 1. In a sewii'ig-machinc cabinet, the combination of a top, a platform hinged to the top, a hinged cover, a rod pivotally supported by the cabinet beneath the top, a linked connection between the rod and platform, an arm having a pivotal connection with the rod and having a portion bearing against the cabinet and a connection between the arm and cover.
2. Ina sewinganachine cabinet, the combination of atop, a platform hinged to the l top, a hinged cover, a rod pivotally supported by the cabinet beneath the top, a linked connection between the rod and platform, an arm supporting a roller, the roller bearing against the back of the cabinet, the arm pivotally connected to the rod, and a flexible connection between the arm and cover.
3. In a sewing-machine cabinet, the combination of a top, a platform hinged to the top, a hinged cover, arod pivotally supported by the cabinet beneath the top, a linked connection between the rod and platform, an arm supporting a roller, the roller bearing against the back of the cabinet, the arm pivotally connected to the rod, a flexible connection between the arm and cover, and a'spring acting to hold the roller in contact with the cabinet-back when the cover is closed.
4. In a sewing-machine cabinet, the combination of a top, a platform hinged to the top, a hinged cover, a rod pivotally supported by the cabinet beneath the top, a linked connection between the rod and platform, an arm extending from the rod, an arm pivotally connected to the arm extending from the rod and having a portion bearing against the I cabinet, and a connection between the pivoted arm and cover.
5. In a sewing-machine cabinet, the combination of a top, a platform hinged to the top, a hinged cover,, a rod pivotal] y supported by the cabinet beneath the top, a linked connection between the rod and platform, an arm extending from the rod, an arm pivotally connected to the arm extending from the rod and supporting a roller bearing against the cabinet, and'a connection between the pivoted arm and the cover.
6. In a sewing-machine cabinet, the combination of a top, a platform hinged to the top, a hinged cover, a rod pivotally supported by the cabinet beneath the top, a linked connection between the rod and platform, an arm extending from the rod, an arm pivotally connected to the arm extending from the rod and having a portion bearing against the cabinet, a spring connected to the pivoted arm and exerting its force against the arm extending from the rod, and a connection between the pivoted arm and the cover.
