TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it kownthat- I, WILLIAM S. Osonw, of Marion, in the county of Meriem-and `State of Ohio, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Cider-Mills; and'I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, `which form a part lof this specification, in which-'F i Figure `l'represents a view in elevation of my improved cider-milll Figure 25a plan or'top view of the same; and i 1 Figui-e3, a View in perspective of one of the frames or sci-papers, which are placed ontop of the vfurnacein the press-tubs. A The nature ot' my inventionconsists in `providing one or 'more press-tubs, the plungerrods'of which are connected by pins toa press-beam, which is Vraised and lowered by means ofscrew-posts, operated by suitable gearing, together with a cylinder and concave for grinding the fruit, and appliances for elevating the platens, end-gates, and Scrapers, afterl the pomace hasbeen pressed. 4 l
Inthe accompanying drawings, which show a. convenient arrangement of parts for carrying out the objects of my invention, A represent-s a substantalframe, to which the mechanism ,is attached. B B are the presstubs,` which are firmly secured to the uprghtsA. The press-tubs are furnished with removable bottoms or racks, 6, which rest upon a bed-plate, (Lat-tacked to the frame, from which spouts, c, carry off the cider. B1 Bt are the platens, which are attached to plunger-rods, Il bi' A numberY of holes are made 'in the plunger-rods, through which p'ins ol pass, to connect them to staples on the lower side of the press-beani D, which moves vertically between theuprights Al. Vertical screw-posts or shafts, E, are mounted in hearings or steps on the Aframe A, and have screws, '132,V4 upon their upper ends, which connect with nuts D', attached by rings to staples o u the lower side ofthe pressfbeam The screw-posts are rotated by means'uof bevel-gears,ie, uponv their lower 'ends,'which engage similar gears, el, upon liorizontnl'shafts, which areturned by the crankseg. Holes', are made inthe screw-posts, intowhich hand-spikes may her inserted for the purpose of turning them, if sufficient powercannot be exerted upon the cranks. vWeighttubs, El, are secured upon the screw-posts-E. .l VThe rotationlofthescrew-posts gives vertical motion to the press-beam D, by itsiconnection with the nuts D', a'ndconsequentlyto' the`plunger-rods. and their platens attached thereto.` Frames or Scrapers, L, iig. 3, are placed in the press-tubs, on top ot` the pomace, before'the' latter is pressed. A toothedl cylinder, g, istmounted in a concave, G, and rotated by means' of a pulley, g', upon.its shaft, for the puposeofrgrinding the apples.
'I'he grinder is placed above a pomace-troughp", which rests upon the tops of4 the press-tubs., and upon uprights-F, ndis furnishedwith gatesf, which allow egress for the pomace to the'press-tubs. The: press-tubs are providedwith removable end-gates B, -which form their rear sides, andwh'ich may berasedl by means of a cord,j, passing-over an adjustable pulley,K, and a stationary pulley, K', and woundupon a windlass', J. A windlass, is mounted in 'bearings in the frame 'Akt-o which c ordsvkare connected,l passing over pulleys h', and connected to the plunger-rods b', for the'purpo-se` of raising' them after the pomaoe has been pressed. A1 cord can also beattached .to the windlass passing under and around therollers I I, for thc purpose'of removing 'the rack-s b, scrapers L, and the pulp from which the cider has beenexpressed, after the end-gates have been raised by the windlass v v I The apples having Vbeen ground by the cylinder g., the pomcce passes into the trough F, and through the gates f into the press-tubs, Wheredt is pressed byr'otating the screw-rods to lowerfthe press-beam D, and with it the plunger-rods and platens. At the close of the operation, the: end-gates B2 are raised by means ofthe windlassJ, andthe plunger-rodsand platens raised, andthe-racks, scrapers, and pulp removed-by the rotation of the windlass H, alording readymeans of cleaning the press-tubs for further operation'.
Having thus fully described my improved cider-mill, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by p Letters Patent, isl -'.lhe press-beam D, plunger-rods b/screw-posts E, screws E2, and swivel-nuts D', all arranged anrd operated substantially as herein set forth. v
In testimony that'I claim the foregoing as my own, I alix my signature in presence oftwo-witnesses. Y WILLIAM S. OBORN.
