GENERATOR FOR THE PRODUCTICN OF ACETYLENE GAS- Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that we, EDWARD GEORGE PEY- TON and ARCHIBALD MONTGOMERIE CRAIG, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Glasgow, in the county of Lanark, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Generators for the Production of Acetylene Gas; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
()ur invention relates to improvements in generators for the production of acetylene gas, and especially to means for removing the sludge from said generators; and the object of our invention is to provide a simple and effective means for this purpose.
In the drawing the figure represents a vertical cross-section, partly in elevation, of our improved generator.
The form of generator made in accordance with our invention is shown in the drawing and indicated by A and is of the type wherein the carbid of calcium is dropped into water by hand or automatically. The generator A may be cylindric, conical, or other convenient form with a portion of its upper area rising up into a dome A, which constitutes a gas-chamber wherein, above the level of the water, the gas is stored after it is generated and is led away in the direction of the arrow to the outlet-pipe A The method of introducing the carbid of calcium is by a chute or hopper A", formed on the top of the generator and provided with a hinged measuring device A, which permits of its contents being tipped into the chute or hopper at will. The level of the Water used in the decomposition of the carbid rises to a convenient height Within the said chute or hopper A and forms a water seal to the generator. The lower end of the hopper or chute is provided with a valve, which may be a ball-cock or hemispherical valve a and which is readily depressed by the Weight of the carbid, but prevents any tendency of the gas to escape by this opening. We form the generator A with a downwardly-projecting taper sufiiciently sloping to permit of the lime B falling by its own weight or gravity into a curved or other conveniently-shaped chamber or compartment C for removal. The chamher or compartment C has at the top thereof a sluice-valve D, which can be easily manipulated at will by a hand-wheel c. In its normal position and during the generation of gas the sluice-valve D is opened, which permits the residuum or slaked limeB to fall into the curved chamber 0. The said curved chamber or compartment 0 terminates outwardly with a valve, stop-cock, or plug E, provided with sufficient port area for the entire removal of the residuum B when opened, The said curved chamber or compartment C is provided with an ingress-tube F for the supply of water and an egress-tube (Z, which may conveniently be made to pass through the center of the sluice-valve D longitudinally for the displacement of air, and a stop-cock e terminates the outer end of said air-tube d. The sluice-valve D having been opened for the expulsion of the slaked lime B, after which operation it is closed and communication with .the generator cut off, the valve or stop-cock f of the water-supply pipe F is opened, to-
gether with the discharge valve or plug E, and the chamber or compartment 0 well flushed. After the flushing operation and the removal of the residuum the discharge valve or plug E is closed and water admitted into the chamher or compartment until the receptacle is filled. The operation of charging the generator A with carbid of calcium and the production of gas can now be proceeded-With as before.-
1. In a generator for producing acetylene gas, the combination with the generator-casing, of means for removing the sludge therefrom, consisting of two valves adapted to form a chamber in the lower part of the generator, and means for admitting air through the upper valve, substantially as described.
2. In a generator for producing acetylene gas, the combination with the generator-casing terminating in a curved outlet, ofa valve closing said outlet, another valve located some distance above said first valve, thereby formingasludge-chamber between said valves, a valved. pipe connected with said chamber, a passage through said upper valve for admitting air to the sludge-chamber, and means for opening and closing said passage, substantially as described.
3.
