Be it known that l, WILLIAM F. KRICH BAUM, a citizen oit the United States, residing,l at Newark, in the county of Essex and State ot New Jersey, have invented certain new and useilul Improvements in Pressure-Controlling Devices; and l do hereby declare the 'following' to be a t ull, clear, and exact description et the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanyingl drawings, and to iigures of reference marked thereon, which Yform a part of this speciication.
This invention relates to that class oiI automatic pressure-control]ingl devices which are operated by the high or initial pressure acting upon a piston which actuates a main valve to open the same, the admission ot' said high or initial pressure to said piston beingI controlled by an auxiliary or secondary valve, which in turn is operated by a diaphragm subject to any variations from the pressure desired to be maintained.
',lhe objects ot' the invention are to provide such a pressure-eontrolling device which can be used, lirst, as a pump-governor adapted to admit to a pumping-engine an operating); pres sure which shall be under the control ot' the pump-discharge pressure; second, as a blower-valve or ian-engine controller adapted to maintain a unit'orm boiler-pressure by transmitting` variations therein to the blower or tan-engine, and, third, as a pressure-regulator or redueingwalve to provide suoli a pressure-controlling' device which is oli simple construction; to secure in such a device an auxiliary Valve which shall operate downward against the :tlow oi the high pressure to the main-valtie-controlling piston; to provide a recess around the said auxiliary-valve seat which shall afford an ample steamepaee .at that point; to obtain a construction having1 a spring and adjusting-nut arranged intcrmediate olI the diaphragm and the auxiliaryvalve scat; to conveniently center said spring; to provide a by-pass adapted to be used in connection with the employment of the device as a blower-valve, and to secure other advantages and results, some oi' which may be hereinafter referred to in connection with the description ot the working' parts. i

From said valve-seat 16 an aperture or passage 31 leads through the top piece 13 to an annular recess 17 near the lower outer edges ot the same, and which annular recess connects with a passage 18, leading' upward :trom the valve-hody f2. on the inlet side o1 the valve 7. rt further passage 19 leads :trom the enlarged chamber 15 at one side ot the valve-seat 1G therein down through the top piece 13 into the pistonchaniber 12. 1t will be thus understood that when the auxiliary valve jill: lifted the high pressure admitted at the inlet end El will pass uliward through passages lil, 1i', and 31 into chamber 15 and downuard through pasn .sage 19 to act upon the piston 1.1, and this pisthe blower-engine in motion.

The upper part of the top piece 13 is threaded, as at 20, to receive aframe 21, which forms at its upper end a chamber 22 for a flexible diaphragm 23, the top of said chamber being closed by a cap 24, apertured and threaded, as at 25, to receive a pipe connection. The auxiliary valve 14 abuts at its upper end 26 against the diaphragm 23, and thus as said diaphragm is lowered or raised by the pressure above it said auxiliary valve 14 is operated. A spiral spring 27 beneath the head 26 of the auxiliary valve serves to regulate the operation oil the same, and a collar 28 below said spring is threaded to screw in a transverse seat 29 of the frame 21 to regulate the power of the spring. By the construction thus described it will be understood that when pressure upon the diaphragm 23 is sufticiently strong it will force the auxiliary valve 14 downward and so close the high-pressure passage at the valve-seat 16. This shuts off passage of high pressure to the upper side of the piston 11 and permits the closing of the valve 7 under the direct flow of said high pressure.
In using my improved device as a pumpgovernor the pump-discharge is connected as at 25, and thus the admission of the steam or other pressure iiuid to the pump-angine is regulated by the discharge. l hen employed as a blower-valve, the initial pressure which enters the valve-body 3 is connected to the diaphragm at 25, and thus as the pressure gets too high the valve closes against the passage of pressure iiuid to the fan or blower, which creates the boiler draft, thus cooling' down the boiler. To prevent the blower stopping' entirely, I prefer to provide in the valve wall or partition 5 an aperture 32, adapted to be entirely or partially closed by a screw 33 and which aperture may be left permanently open to permit suiiicient pressure to pass to keep As a pressureregulator the outlet end 4 of the valve-body 2 is connected to the diaphragm, as well as to the place of supply, and thus reduces the pressure supplied to any desired point.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is l '1. In a pressure-controlling device, a body portion having inlet and outlet ends with a partition between providing a valve-seat and a piston-cylinder at the top of said body part, a main valve for said valve-seat having a stem with a piston thereon lying in said cylinder, a top piece closing the top of said piston-cylinder and having a chamber therein with a passage leading therefrom into the pistoncylinder, the said body portion and top piece providing a passage from the inlet end of the body portion opening into said chamber and said chamber providing a valve-seat, an auxiliary valve projecting into said chamber and being adapted to engage said seat to close communication between the said passages, a ilexible diaphragm adapted to engage the other end of said auxiliary valve, and a cap forming with said diaphragm a closed pressurespace and providing'means forA connecting a duct or pipe.
2. In a pressure-controlling device, a body portion having inlet and outlet ends with a partition between providing a valve-seat and a piston-cylinder at the top of said body part, a main valve for said valve-seat having a stem with a piston thereon lying in said cylinder, a top piece closing the top of said piston-cylinder and having a chamber therein with a floor having a `raised portion and a passage leading from said chamber into the pistoncylinder, the said body portion and top piece providing a passage leading' from the inlet end of the body portion into the said chamber, one of the said passages opening into said chamber through the said raised portion of the chamber-Hoor, an auxiliary valve projecting through the top of said top piece to engage said raised portion of the chamberfloor as a valve-seat, a flexible diaphragm adapted to engage the other end or' said auxiliary Valve, and a cap forming with said diaphragm a closed pressure-space and providing means for connecting a duct or pipe.
3. In a pressure-controlling device, a body portion having inlet and outlet ends with a partition between providing a valve-seat and .a piston-cylinder at the top of said body part, a main valve for said valve-seat having a stem with a piston thereon lying in said cylinder, a top piece closing the top of said piston-cylinder and having a chamber therein with a floor having a horizontal portion and a passage leading from said chamber into the piston-cylinder, the said body portion and top piece providing a passage leading from the inlet end of the valve into the chamber, one of said passages opening into said chamber through the said horizontal portion of the chamber-door and forming a horizontal valveseat, an auxiliary valve projecting downward into the said chamber to engage the said valveseat, a iexible diaphragm adapted to engage the other end of said auxiliary valve, and a cap forming with said diaphragm a closed pressure-space and providing means for connecting a duct or pipe.
4. In a pressure-controlling device, a body portion having a piston-cylinder at its upper side, a main valve in said body portion having a piston-head lying in said cylinder, a top piece providing an auxiliary-valve space With passages leading' therefrom to the piston-cylinder and inlet end of the body portion respectively, a frame open at its sides mounted upon said top piece, a diaphragm at the top of said frame, a cap above said diaphragm,
and an auxiliary valve mounted in said frame with its upper end against the said diaphragm and its lower end adapted to close communication between the said passages opening into the toppiece chamber.
5. In a pressiue-eontrolling device, a body portion having a piston-cylinder at its upper side, a main valve in said body portion having a piston-head lying in said cylinder', a top piece providing an auxiliary-valve space with passages leading therefrom to the piston-cylinder and inlet end of the body portion respectively, a frame open at its sides mounted upon said top piece, a diaphragm at the top of said frame, an auxiliary valve mounted in said frame with its upper end against the said diaphragm and its lower end adapted to close communication between the said passages opening into the top-piece chamber, a coiled spring upon said auxiliary valve below the diaphragm, and an adjusting-nut mounted in the frame below said spring'.
6. ln a pressure-controlling device, a body portion having a piston-cylinder at its upper side, a main valve in said body portion having a piston-head lying' in said cylinder, a top piece providing an auxiliary-valve space with passages leading therefrom to the piston-cylinder and inlet end of the body portion respectively, a frame open at its sides mounted upon said top piece, a diaphragm at the top of said frame, an auxiliary valve having a head engaging the said diaphragm and a re duced shank extending downward and adapted at its lower end to close communication be- 4tween the said top-piece passages, an adjustingnut mounted in the frame between the dia'- phragln and top piece and loosely surround ing the shank of the auxiliary valve, annular centering projections upon facing sides of said adjusting-nut and the auxiliary-valve head, and a spiral spring upon said projections between the said parts.
7. ln a blower-controllingl valve, a body portion having inlet and outlet ends with a partition between providing in itself a valve-seat and a bypass or aperture independent of the valve-opening, said body portion also having a piston-eylinder at its top, a main valve for said valve-seat having a stem with a piston thereon lyingl in said cylinder, an auxiliary valve adapted to control the passage of initial pressure through said inlet end of the body portion to the said piston, a diaphragm adapted to be exposed to said initial pressure and to transmit movement to said auxiliary valve, and a regulating-screw for said by-pass, whereby the blower-engine may be prevented from stopping entirely and yet governed by the controlling-valve.
