Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15. 1905.
Application filed April 24, 1905. Serial No, 257,111.
To all whom, 'llt 'may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Enna, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Thayer, in the countyof Oregon and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings for Drill-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in coupling's for drill-tools; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my invention applied to the connection between a drill and its stem. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the cover and attached nut-lock, and Fig'. 3 is a plan view of a wrench especially adapted for use in assembling the parts of the coupling. Fig. 4l is a side view of the reduced portion of the drill-stock. Fig. 5 is a face View of the locking-nut.
lin the practical application of my invention herein shown and described the drill-stock A is provided with a reduced end a, comprising a portion a of relatively large diameter, a portion a2 of relatively small diameter, and a tapering portion a, connecting' the portions a' and a2. The portion a' is provided with right-handed screw-threads, and the portion a2 is provided with left-handed screw-threads for a purpose to be hereinafter stated.
The drill-stem B is provided with a longitudinal bore I), having an internally-screwthreaded portion for engaging' the portion a and a portion b2 to receive the tapered portion a3 of the drill-stock and communicating with a chamber 3, formed in one of the faces of the drill-stem. Within the chamber t is a nut 725, having left-handed screw-threads for engaging the screw-threaded portion a2 of the drill-stock.
',lhe surface Z1' of the drill-stem B is rabbeted to receive a plate C, provided on its lower face with a nut-lock e, adapted to enter the chamber 3 and to fit closely against the rear face of the nut U. A set-screw c of considerable length traversing a screw-threaded opening c2 in the plate C and a screwthreaded perforation in the drill-stein secures the plate over the opening of the chamber. m
llhe nut b5 over a portion of its extent is octagonal in cross-section to facilitate the application of the wrench, and the engaging face is circular to present a broad surface to the inner wall of the chamber. The drillstem B is enlarged in diameter around the chamber and to a limited extent above and below the same to olfset the loss of strength due to the formation of the chamber.
ln assembling' the parts the reduced portion of the drill-stock is introduced through the bore in the drill-stem and turned into place. The nut ff) is then turned onto the part as, and the covering-plate with the attached nut-lock is litted into place and secured by the setscrew.
1While I have shown and described my invention as applied to a drill-stem coupling, l do not choose to limit myself to such construction, since it is obvious that it is capable of use in any construction requiring a rigid connection unaffected by rotation.
One of the principal advantages of my improved coupling' is the absoluto security against detachment by reverse rotation. To disengage the parts, access must be had to the chamber. This is an important feature in well-drilling, as it is frequently necessary or desirable to reversely rotate the drill.
For convenience in assembling the coupling l have designed the wrench shown in Fig. 3, comprising a handle portion D, bearing' at one end an octagonal engaging portion Z for the reversely-threaded nut and at the other a square engaging portion (Z/ for the set-screw of the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. ln a drill-coupling the combination of a drill-stern, provided on its face with a chamber, and in its end with a screw-threaded bore communicating with the chamber, a left-handed nut within the chamber, a drill-stock having a reduced. end, comprising a screw-threaded portion of relatively large diameter for engaging the screw-threaded bore, and a reversely-serew-threaded portion of relatively small diameter for engaging the nut within thc chamber, a covering-plate for the chamber, a lug on the inner face of the covering'- plate for engaging the left-handed nut, and a screw-threaded bolt for securing the covering-plate to the drill-stem.
2. lin a drill-coupling the combination of a drill-stem provided in its face with a chamber, and in its end with a screw-threaded bore communicating with the chamber, a reverselyscrew-thread ed nut within the chamber, a drillstock having a reduced end comprising a screwthreaded 'portion of relatively large diameter,
for engaging the screw-threaded bore, and a reversely-screW-threaded portion of relatively small diameter for engaging the nut Within the chamber, means Within the chamber for looking the nut and a covering-plate for the chamber.
3. In a drill-coupling the combination of a drill-stem provided in its face with a chamber, and in its end with a screw-threaded bore communicating with the cham ber, a reverselyscrew-threaded nut Within the chamber, a drillstoel provided with a screw-threaded portion to engage the bore, and a reversely-serevthreaded portion to engage the nut Within the chamber, and means Within the chamber for looking the nut.
4. In a coupling the combination of a shaft having in its face a chamber, and in its end a bore communicating with the chamber, a nut within the chamber, a second shaft Within the bore and having a screw-threaded end to engage the nut, a covering-plate for the chamber, and means on the covering-plate for locking the nut.
5. In a coupling the Combination of a shaft havingin its face a chamber, and in its end a bore Communicating with the Chamber, a nut Within the chamber, a second shaft Within the bore, and having a screw-threaded end to engage the nut, and means Within the chamber and independent of the second shaft for looking the nut.
