Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 19021.
Application filed January 19, 1904. Serial No. 189,659.
To all 1117/110721/ 'it 'lit/ty] con/cern:
Be it known that l', Vrnonnz Pirrnr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Corona, in the county of Queens and citate of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in (lame Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lhis invention relates to game or amusement devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be used in a parlor or other compartment of a dwelling', or in a cafe, saloon, or other place where such devices are usually 'to be found. i
rl `he invention is fully disclosed in the following' specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which-- liigure l is a sectional side view of my improved game or amusement device; Fig 2, a central transverse section of a table which forms a part of my improved game or amusement device, and Fig. 3? a similar view at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2.
ln the practice of my invention as shown in thedrawings Vl provide a table fr, having legs mi rigidly connected with a base the bottom of which is provided with a bar lli, with which connected an upright hollow or tubular member c, havingI a base c, which is slidably connected with the bar 62. ln practice l prefer to connect the base and the bar t2 by means of a tongue-and-groove construction whereby said upright member or post c may be adjusted toward and from the table a, or, if desired, this construction maybe reversed and the connection of the bar 7; with the table a may be an adjustable one, in which event said har and the upright member or post v i'night be rigidly connected.
ln the upper end of the upright member or post c is a vertically-adjustable rod (I, which is held in place at any desired point of adjustment by a screw ff, passing through one side of the upright member or post c, and detachably connected with the upper end of the rod Z is a supiilemental upright member (Z3, provided at the top with a laterally-directed arm d", at the outer end of which is a hole d", which in the form of construction shown passes vertically therethrough. Vl also provide a cord e, which is passed loosely through the top portion of the upright member (Z3 above the arm d" at e2 and through the hole d5, and the end of the cord which passes through the hole (Il is provided with a ball (il, and the other end thereof is adapted to be connected with the screw d or with any other attaching device connected with the post or upright member c.
rlhe table a is shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3, and comprises a box-shaped portion a2, closed at the bottom and open at the top and provided with a removable cover ai, and said cover is provided at one side with a hanger u," and at the opposite side with a yoke-shaped hanger uf, and one side of `the box-shaped portion d of the table a is provided with a verticall if-arranged recess a to receive the yoke-shaped hanger al, and mounted in the hangers il and ai is a shaft f, provided with a roller f2, and the shaft j and roller j thereon are made in the manner of an ordinary spring window-shade roller, the shaft f being provided between the sides of the yokeshaped hanger al with a spiral spring (y, one end of which is secured to the said shaft and the other to a cross-piece y2 between theopposite sides of the yoke-shaped hanger 15; but one end of said spring may be secured to the yoke-shaliied hanger al in any desired manner, and the rollerf is supported by the hangers a" and a and is removable from the table with the cover fr. One end of the shaft f projects through the side of the table a or the box-shaped portion a2 thereof and is provided with a knob, head, or handle f by which it may be turned in one direction.
rIhe top portion a of the table a is provided with a plurality of openings t, and connected with the roller f are a plurality of cords 7b2, which pass through said openings and are connected with pins ef. ln the form of construction shown the pins /zfl are arranged on thc table t in the :form of a rectangle, one central pin being employed, and said pins being preferably nine in number, and the holes or openings /z in the top nl of the table a are similarly formed. The top of; of the table a is also preferably provided with a cloth covering ff, and secured thereto over each of the openings /t is a small metal plate By turning the roller to the right all of the pins lr will be raised to an upright position, and when said roller is released the spring g will turn said roller backwardly through a part of a revolution and all the cords will be relaxed andthe pins 7b3 will stand by gravity on the table, as shown.
In practice a player stands so as to holc the ball .3 as shown at y' in Fig. l and exerts a slight pull on the cord e. The ball a is then released and swings through a substantially elliptical orbit and the object is to see how many of the pins can be knocked down vby the return movement of the ball and to determine how many of such movements it will require to knock down all the pins, and the player who knocks down all the pins by the least number of movements of the ball wins the game.
rIhe top a of the table a may be connected therewith or with the box-shaped part thereof in any desired manner; but I prefer to employ a lock m for this purpose, and in the form of construction shown this lock operates in connection with the hanger rif/5*.
It will be observed that the height of the support with which the cord e is connected may be adjusted to any desired extent, and the length of the cord e may also be adjusted to any desired extent; but in practice the position of said support and the length of the free end of the cord is preferably so regulated that the ball e when suspended directly over the table will come to within about an inch of the top thereof, and I also prefer to position the parts so that the support will be in line with a diagonal line passing' through the table; but this arrangement may be varied as may be desired.
This device is particularly intended for the amusement of children in homes, but, as hereinbefore stated, may be used wherever devices of this class are required.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
l. In a device of the class described, a boxshaped table having a removable cover, said cover being' provided at one side with a hanger and at the opposite side with a yokeshaped hanger, one side of the box-shaped table being also provided with a verticallyarranged recess, for the reception of said yoke-shaped hanger, and a spring-roller provided with a shaft mounted in said hangers and one end of which projects from one side of said table, and a plurality of pins placed on said table and the bases of which are connected with said roller by cords which pass through the top of the table, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the class described, aboxshaped table having a removable cover, a roller mounted in said table and connected to and removable with said cover and projecting from one side of said table and provided with a knob or handle, a spring for turning said roller in one direction, a plurality of pins placed on said table and cords connected with said roller and passing through the top of said table and connected with the bases of said pins, substantially as shown and described.
YIn testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of January, 1904.
