Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed April 16, 1903. Serial No. 152,935.
To H/H- whom, it 711/14 con/writ:
Be it known that l, U sense it. it. findin s, a citizen of the United States, residing at lflranklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool Dressing llaclis, of "which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved tooldressing jack. the object and use of which will be fully understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My device is for use in dressing the tools, and particularly the d rill-bits, used in drilling wells, more especially oil-wells. where the bits employed are sometimes very heavy and cumbersome to manipulate in the process of dressing; and my invention has been devised to facilitate this work.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device. together with a drill-bit and an anvil, all as they would appear when about to be placed in service. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in its service position.
l /ly device is constructed as follows:
A suspension'strap l is adapted to be hung upon or hooked to any convenient beam or scantling. (preferably a portion of the' frame of an oil-derrick.) and to said suspension-strap is adjustably attached a fulcrum-rod 2, having near the fulcrum or pivotal point F the offset f. To said rod 52 is pivoted a lever 3, one end of which extends some distance to the rear and is formed into a handle 3 for the purpose of manipulation and the other end 3 whereof extends forward a shorter distance and has pivoted theretd a connecting-rod L, which also has an offset f near the upper or lever end thereof. The lower end of said rod 4c is attached to one end of a movable rest 5.
The other end of rest 5 is attached to an upright standard 6.
The elements thus far described, combined as shown, constitute my tool-dressing jack, in close proximity to which is placed an anvil 7, upon which rests the end of the bit B to be dressed. The other or threaded end of said bit rests upon the rest 5 of my device, and.
when the bit is first placed in positionthe rest 5 is lowered by means of lever 3, as shown in Fig. l, and when the rest 5 is brought to the position shown in Fig. 2 the bit is in readiness to be operated upon by the tool-dresser.
The operation of dressing tools is that of drawing or forging out to the proper conformation at the cutting edge or point, the tool having been previously heated for this purpose. Tools of this class often weigh several hundred pounds. lllence the utility and necessity of my device.
Auxiliary adjustments may be obtained by means of the holes 8 in thesuspensioirstrap, as the eye 9 of the rod Qisadapted to be raised and attached at any of said holes 8. A fur" ther adjustment is also possible through the medium of slot '10 in standard (3, as rest 5 is adapted to be here raised and lowered and secured at any desired adjustment.
lby the conformation of fulcrum-rod 2 and cormecting-rod t it is readily apparent that when lever 3 is carried upward it may pass sufficiently past the vertical line (1/ a, which passes through the pivotal point, to cause the same to remain in the position shown in Fig. 2 during the dressing operation.
llaving thus described my device, what .lli claim new',a1*1d desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
in a tool-dressing jack the combination of a suspension-rod, a fulcru m-rod secured thereto and having a bent or offset portion near its lower end, a handled lever pivoted intermediate of its handle and opposite end to the fulcrum-rod at the extreme lower end of the latter, a connecting-rod pivoted to the extreme end of the lever, said rod having a bent or olii'set portion corresponding to thatof the fulcrum-rod, but oppositely located in relation thereto, and a vertieally-movable rest at tached to the lower end of said, connectingrod. substantially as shown and described.
in testimony whereof ll aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. R. lilUtll' l'liltl.
