Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 14, 1901i. Serial No. 232,718Y
To @M LU/tom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LoUIs E. Banus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aspen, in the county of Fitkin and State ot' Colorado, have invented new and useiul Improvements in Distilling Apparatus, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention is a distilling apparatus tor water, and it is characterized particularly by the fact that the steam condensed is utilized to heat the water in an ordinary domestic hotwater tank, the still being particularly adapted 'for domestic use.
A further feature of the invention is the provision ot' a safety device to prevent overheating and explosion due to low water or failure of water-supply.
By reason ot' these features the invention will be found particularly uselul in connection with an ordinaryhousehold water-heating apparatus.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein4 Figure 1 is an elevation ot' the apparatus, partly in section. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a vertical section and a side elevation of a safety-valve and its casing. Fig. 4t is a plan view oi' the cover to the tank which controls the t'eed of water to the water-back ot' the range.
Referring' specifically to the drawings, 6 in dicates the water-back or boiler of a range or stove which is utilized to boil the water to be distilled.
7 is an ordinary hot-water tank.
At 8 is indicated a su pply-pipe through which water enters into an elevated storagetank 9, where the height of water is regulated by a float-valve 10 in the pipe 8. Leading' from tank 9 is a pipe 11, through which water is supplied to a tank 12, which is located beside and at substantially the same height as the water-back of the range. The flow of water from the pipe 11 to the tank 12 is controlled by a iioat-valve 13. The tank 12 is connected to the water-back 6 by a pipe 14, and thus the level oit' water in the water-back 6 and the tank 12 is the same. The tloat of the valve 13 is so positioned that the level of the water in the water-back is just below the outlet-pipe 15 for the steam. This outlet-pipe leads from the water-back to a coil 16 in the hot-water tank 7, where the steam is condensed and the water escapes through the outlet 17, where it may be caught in a suitable vessel.
The tank 12 is provided with a safety device which operates in case ot' an interference with the water-supl'ily, said safety device being con structed as follows: At 18 is indicated a valve casing or fitting containing valves 19 and 2l), which are controlled by a iloat 21, contained in a box 22, located within the tank 12. Flinter in the tank 12 enters the box 22 by a coil 23, which is open at the lower end. The stein oi the lV-litting 18 extends through the cover oit the tank 12, as shown. rlhe valves 19and 20 are respectively opened and closed by the iioat 21, which is controlled by the rise and iall of water in the tank 12. When the water is at normal or proper height, the valve 19 is open and the valve 2O is closed. This allows t'rce passage ol steam through pipe 15 and into the condcnsing-coil16. Should the tlow of water from tank 9 stop by accident or otherwise while the still is working, the water in tank 12 sinks, and with it the float 21, which closes the valve 19 and opens the valve 20, and con sequently changes the course o't' the steam Yfrom the pipe 15 into the coil 23, in which it is condensed by the water remaining' in the tank 12 and is used over and over again, thus keeping a supply ot' water in the watenback. The box 22 is also provided with a whistle 2i, which projects through the cover of the tank 12. Then in consequence oiI the movement ot' the valves 19 and 2O steam enters this box, it blows the whistle, and therefore noti'lies the persons in hearingl oiI the condition and oi the necessity for refilling the tank 12. This relilling is preferably done by hand` for which purpose the cover 25 of the tank 12 is made lunnel-shaped with a small hole 26 at the bottom. When water is poured into the cover, it will slowly enter the tank through the hole, pro vidingI a gradual `tlow of water into the waterback, so as not to crack it by sudden inflow of a large quantity ot' cold water. The pipe 27 is an overflow-pipe from the tank 6 and has therein a flushing-plug 28. The overflowpipe 27 is also connected to the tank 12 at 29 to take care of any excess oiE water therein in case the i'loat-valve 13 should become leaky.
It will be seen that the heat contained in the steam generated is utilized in the coil 16 `t'or the purpose of heating the water in the tank 7. A double purpose is thus served, since by the operation oi the still a supply ot' hot water is also economically provided. The safety appliance formed by the valves associated with the tank l2 prevents any explosion due to interference with the Watersnp ply, which is normally automatic and requires no attention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a still, the combination with a boiler, a condenser, and a tank connected to the boiler and having the same Water-level, of a steaxnpipe connecting' the boiler and condenser and having an inlet into the tank, and a lioat-valve in the tank, controlling' said pipe and inlet, and arranged to close the pipe from the boiler to the condenser, and open the inlet to the tank, when the Water in the tank and boiler becomes low.
2. In a still, the combination With a boiler and a condenser, anda steampipe leading from the former to the latter, of a tank connected to the boiler and havingl the same Water-level, a coil in the tank, open at the lower end and havinga valved inlet from the said steam-pipe at thel upper end, and a oat in the tank controlling' said valve, substantially as described. 3. In a still, the combination With a boiler and acondenser, and asteam-pipeleading from the former to the latter, of a tank connected to the boiler, a casing in the tank, an inlet from the steam-pipe to the casing, valves in said pipe and inlet, the former being normally open and the latter'normally closed, alloat in the casing controlling said valves and acting to close the pipe, and open the inlet to the caeing, yin case of low Water, and a Whistle connected to the casing and sounded by steam therein.
In testimony WhereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses,
LOUIS E. BEERS. fitnessesz H. IV. CLARK, E. L. OGDEN.
