Specification of Letters Patent.
lEatented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application tiled July 19, 1904l Serial No. 217,251.
To all 'U17/bont it 'nw/y concern.'
lie it known that we, JOHN UBL, a citizenol" the Uni ted States, and PAUL Vormsneu, a sub- `iect of the Emperor ot' lustria-lilungary, both residing at New York, in the county of New York' and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovennents in tulothesfDriers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ol' this specilication.
rlhis invention relates to clothes d-riers which are intended for outdoor use, and particularly in cramped locations between large Vlt has a traveling endless line, each part of which can be readily brought to any point in its circuit. yl `he line-supports may be located so that the line will run in any direction from vertical to horizontal. For this reason it may extend many stories in height.
The accompanying` drawings illustrate the invention, its various features being referred to by letters, similar letters denoting corresponding parts in both views.
lfigure l in the drawings is a side elevation of the device with its support shown fragmentarily. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the pulley on line a; w of Fig. l.
Vl`he letter A designates a strong screw eye or bolt having' an eye at its outer end. This bolt is to be screwed or driven into a post or other object and supports the pulley mechanism.
B is what we have denominated a Mbellpulley from its resemblance to a bell. 1t has an 'upper section or body b, a widely-iiaring lower section b2, and a rope-groove between said sections.
U is a vertical screw-bolt constituting the shaft on which the pulley revolves. llt extends upward through a central opening in the pulley and on successively through a nut (l, a iam-nut al', acap c, theabove-mentioned screweye A, and a top nut j', which is tightened down upon the eyebolt fi... l/V e prefer to use ball-bearings with this pulley, one set of balls vf/being located between the head c of the bolt C and a cone c seated in the lower part of the body of the pulley, and another' set of balls fy between a cone in the upper part ofsaid body and the nut nl next above. lhe lower edge of the cap c extends below the upper edge ol the bellspulley in order to prevent rain and dust from entering the bearings.
lfl is the clothes line or rope on which are hung the articles to be dried.
l`he enlargement of the pulley below the rope-groove permits considerable increase in. length of the rope without its leaving the pulley, and the screweyes may be partly with drawn from or be screwed farther into theretaining wall or pole, thereby varying the distance between the omiosite pulleys. lt is evident that these lnilleys may be located so that the rope may extend in any direction.
l'laving described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isn
1. fl clothes-drier comprising a pulley having a groove for the clothes-line, a vertical shaft in said pulley, a supporting screw-eye to which said shaft is attached and a cap on said pulley whose lower edge overlaps the upper edge of the pulley as described.
2. rl clothes drier comprising' a pulley adapted for ball-bearings and formed with an upper body-section, a widely-flaring lower section and a rope-groove therebetween, a verti cal supporting-shaft through said pulley, a nut on said shaft resting on the upper face of said upper body-section, a jam-nut on said nut, a cap through which said bolt passes, the edge of said cap overlapping the upper edge of said body section, a screw bolthaving an eye through which said shaft passes and a nut to tighten said screw-bolt upon said cap, substantially as herein set forth.
ln testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
J'llxlN UBL. lblUL VOYDllUh. l'lfitnesses:
lnuns'ro llflaeanuse, U'r'ro Darren.
