%lllllElEi @vllllEr t Ein Specification of Letters Patent.
iEatenterl Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed February 21,1905. Serial No. 246.773.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that l, VVILLIAM Suunuioosu, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Treland, residing at Olarodon Works, Charlotte street, Sheffield, county of York, England, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Sheep'Shears, (for which 1 have applied for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 10,729, dated the 10th day of May, 1904,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved method of constructing sheep-shears having detachable blades, the object being to simplify the manufacture by dispensing with all loose parts-such as screws, wedges, and the likeand to make the various parts interchangeable, and in order that my invention may be clearly understood and dissociated from other methods of construction having the same object in View I have illutrated the invention in the annexed sheet of drawings, to which reference will be made.
Figure 1 represents a sheep-shear made according to my invention; Fig. 2, enlarged view of the nozzle formed upon each shank; Fig. 3, enlarged view oi the butt-end of blade with its tang.
lin carrying out the invention it punch or otherwise out out from flat steel blanks of the shape required to produce the blade A and its tang A also other blanks to form the two shanks l3 and bow O in one piece, or separate shanks with a halt-bow, which are afterward secured together, as may be preferred. The blades A are out from steel of a quality suitable for carrying a cutting edge; the shanks B and bow C from spring-steel. The tang portion A of the blade A is then bent round a mandrel to a tubular form, as shown in Fig. 3, but notto a complete circle. The extreme end forms an extension A" of half a circle only to act as a stop. The tang is compressible in its diameter and has a resilient expansible reaction. The end of each shank B is also bent round, producing an elastic expansible socket B to receive the tang oi? the blade, and below the socket two lugs it are turned over and bent down toward each other, as shown in Fig. 2, to form a stop or abutment for the extension A to rest upon, and thus prevent any rotary action of the blade within the socket B and also to determine the distance to which the shank of the blade shall enter the said socket by the end A of the part A abutting against the edges of the lugs B. Vl hen the tangs of the blades are forced into the sockets oi the bow-shanks, they will be lirmly held therein by the grip or frictional contact of the slightly-expanded sockets upon the slightlycontracted bladc-tangs, while the relative position of the cutting edges will be maintained by the extensions engaging with the flat surface of the lugs before mentioned.
What i consider to be novel, and desire to protect by Letters Patento'l the United @tates, 1s-
1. In a sheep-shear having detachable blades, the bow-shanks having eXpansible tubular sockets and the blades having tubular tangs to [it the said sockets, radial lugs upon the shanks and coacting extensions on the bladetangs as hereinbefore described and shown.
2. A sheep-shear having detachable blades A, provided with elastic compressible tubular tangs A and semicircular extensions therefrom A, the bow-shanks B, having elastic expansible sockets B, to receive said blade-tangs and provided with radial lugs l8, to engage with said extensions A", as hereinbe't'ore described and shown.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
