Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Aug. l5, i905..
Application iled September 27, 1904. Serial No. 226,335.
To (r/ZZ whom, if; may concern:
Be it known th at l, JAMES H. HOOKER, a citizen ci' the United States, residing` at Edentield, in the county oi Sumter, State et' Florida, have invented certain new and useful lmprovemen ts in Boxes; and l. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boxes or crates, and more particularly to the class of folding or knockdown boxes or crates, the object oi the invention being to provide a cheap and simple construction which when set up will be rigid and durable, which when knocked down will occupy a small space, and in which the. operation oi' setting up and knocking down will consume little time.
ln the drawings forming a portion of this specilication, and in which like numerals ot' reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation ot' the box embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the top of the box removed. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig.4is a vertical section taken longitudinally through the box.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a box comprising sides 5 and 6, ends 8 and 9, a bottom 10, anda top 11. The ends have formed therein adjacent to their upper edges, respectively, transverse lines of perforations 1.2, through which are engaged the three longitudinal tie rods or bolts 13, the ends of which project through the ends of the box and are provided with eyes 14, which aline transversely of the box, the eyes at each end having a key 15 engaged therein. Adjacent to the bottom edges of the ends 8 and 9 are also transverse lines of periorations 17, in which are engaged longitudinal tie rods or bolts 20, having eyes 2.1 at their ends through which are engaged keys 22 and 23. Intermediate o'f these upper and lower series or lines of perforations in each end of the box is a transverse line or series of perforations 24, in which are engaged the longitudinal tie rods or bolts Q5, having' eyes 26 at their ends in which are engaged the keys 27. Between the ends olVl the box are disposed the sides 5 and 6, which are held against inward displacement by the cleats 28 and 29 on the inner faces of the ends, whi le outward ('lisplaccment is prevented by an upper, a lower, and an intermediate series of three tie rods or bolts 30, 31, and 32, respectively, which are engaged through perforations 34, 35, and 36, respectively, in the sides of the box, the tie rods or bolts oi' each series being connected at their ends by a key 39, 40, and 41. respectively, which are engaged in the alining eyes 42, 43, and 44, respectively, of the rods or bolts. ln this way the sides and ends et the box are held securely together, it being noted that the corresponding series ot' longitudinal and transverse tie rods or bolts are in a common plane, such rods or bolts being arched in opposite directions at their points of crossing. The intermediate series of tie rods or bolts serves as a support ior a pasteboard or other partition upon which may be placed the ordil'iary cellcases for eggs or fruit.
Then the box is to be knocked down, it is only necessary to withdraw the keys from the ends oll the tic rods or bolts, when the parts may be readily removed, it being' noted that the bottom 10 ot' the box is held between cleat-s 46 on the sides and ends ot' the box, while the top may be hinged to a side in the usual manner.
What is claimed is- 1. A knockdown box comprising sides and ends having' each upper, lower and intermediate series oi transverse perforations, tierods extending longitudinally within the box and engaging the perforations of the ends and extending outwardly therethrough and having eyes in their extremities, keys engaged in the eyes, transverse tie-rods engaged in the perforations of the sides and extending therethrough and having eyes at their extremities with which are engaged keys, the corresponding longitudinal and transverse bars being arched in opposite directions at their points ot' intersection and lying with their remaining portions in connnon planes respectively, a bottom held between the ends and sides, and a top.
Q. A knockdown box comprising' a bottom, top, sides and ends, the sides and. ends having each upper, lower and intermediate series of transverse pertorations, cleats secured to the ends of the box to prevent inward displacement oi" the sides. cleats secured to the sides to prevent displacement ot' the bottom olI the box, tie-rods extending longitudinally within the box and engaging the peit'orations ol the ends and having eyes at their extremities, keys engaged in the eyes, transverse tie-rods engaged in the perforations of the sides ind l maining portions in common planes respecextendlng therethrough and havlng eyes at tively.
their extremities with which are engaged keys, In testimony whereof I ax my signature in the keys at the sides and ends of the box loepresence of two Witnesses.
