Be it known that l, laUMAN lil. (.iILntn-rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and @tate of New Yorlnl'iave invented a new and useful lm provement in Car Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ear journal-boxes of the Master Vlar-Builders type which have hinged lids for the lilling-openings, and more particularly to means for closing the lid and holding it firmly in closed position.
The objects of the invention are to provide a spring-closing device for journal-box lids of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, such that it will hold the lid open temporarily, but will allow it to close by the aetion of gravity if left open and will firmly hold the lid closed, so as to prevent the entrance of dust, water, or other foreign matter into the box, and to construct the closing device so that it will effeetually pack the lidhinge to prevent the entrance of dust, water, or other foreign matter into the box at the hinged end of the lid.
ln the accompanying` drawings, Figure l is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical section of a liournal-box provided with a lid-closing device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof, showing a different position of the lid. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional elevation thereof in line 3 3, vFig. 1. Fig. 4f is a fragmentary plan View thereof.

A. represents the outer end portion of a car journatbox of the Master Car-Builders construction, having' an inclined end face provided with a filling-opening a., and B represents the lid for the filling-opening, hinged as usual at its upper end to the top of the box. Preferably the box has an upright projection or ridge C, which extends transversely across the top from side to side of the box at its outer end, and this ridge is provided at its opposite encls-tliat is,at the opposite sides of the box-with perforated hinge ears or lugs c, through which and a perforated ningelug d on the lid passes the usual hinge pin or bolt nl. The lid-lug el extends from one to the other of the box-lugs c and is preferably about equal in length to the width of the illing-opening. The lid-lug (Z has an outer or upper face d, which is rounded or curved substantially concentrically with the. hingepin, and an under llat face d. which joins the curved outer face in an abrupt longitudinal angle or corner d". The ridge C on the box has an elongated vertical spring pocket or chamber E, in which is confined a horizontal vertically-nio fable closing and packing bar F, which is suppi'n'ted on one or more springs f, located in the chamber E beneath the bar F. Two coil-springs` are preferably employed and are held in upright position by studsf on the bar and bottom of the chaml er, which enter the ends of the springs. The closing and packing bar, which is equal in length to the lid -lug is pressed upwardly by the springsfl against said lid-l ug and bears against the corner d" thereof when the lid is closed, as shown in lfig. l, and against the curved outer face thereof when the lid is open, as shown in lfig. 2. The location of the corner (/"1 of the lid-lug is such that the upward pressure of the closing-bar thereon tends to swing the lid downwardly and inwardly, thereby holding it firmly and securely against. the rim of the filling-opening and effecting a tight closure of the box. Then the lid is raised, the closing bar is pressed downwari'lly by the corner di on the lid-lug and the springs f are compressed somewhat. The pressure of the closing-bar on the rounded face of the lid-lug when the lid is open is sufiicient to hold the lid open so long as no Aforce is exerted on the lid to close it. lf the lid should beleft open, however, the jarring of the box when the car is in motion, aided by the action of gravity, will cause the lid to lower gradually until the corner d" of the lid-lug bears against the closing-bar, when the pressure of the latter will throw the lid closed and hold it firmly in the closed position. As the closing-bar is pressed against the lid-lug at all times by its springs and is coextensivc in length with said lid-lug, it serves to close the space between the lid-lug and the box and el'lectually prevents the entrance of dust, water, or other foreign mattei' into the box at this point. The lid is preferably provided with side flanges (l, which embrace the sidosol' the outer end of the box and its hinge-lugs to further guard against the entrance of dust, etc., into the box.
The closing device constructed as described is exceedingly simple, and the parts can be assembled quickly and with little labor. There are no projections on the lid, which are always objectionable, as they are liable to be struck and broken. The device does not projectinto and occupy space within the box, and it occupies but little, if any, more space than the hinge-lugs on the standard journal-boxes.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a journal-box, a lid hinged to the box by connected integral lugs on the top of the box and upper end of the lid, a spring-pressed bar located in a chamber on the box beneath the lid-lug and bearing upwardly against said lug, said lug having a face curved concentrically with the axis of the hinge and terminating in a corner against which said spring-pressed bar bears upwardly to close the lid, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a journal-box, a lid hinged to the box by connected hinge-lugs on the box and lid, a spring-pressed bar on the box which bears against the lid-lug to close the lid, said bar bearing against the lid-lug for substantially its full length and closing the box and overhanging said spring-chamber,
a vertically-movable bar in said spring-chamber bearing against said lid-lug, and one or more springs in said chamber beneath said bar for pressing the latter upwardly against said lid-lug, substantially as set forth.
