HOLDER FQR LENSES OF EYEGLA$$E$ who.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed April 4, 1904. Serial No. 201,433.
To all, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. VVINsLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Lenses of Eyeglasses, &c. of which improvements the following is a specification.
In application, Serial No. 201,434, filed of even date herewith, I have described and claimed a construction of clamps or grips for eyeglasses wherein the gripping mem hers are integral with each other and a pocket was provided for the reception of the spring and ear or lug on the nose-guard.
In application Serial No. 201,463 I have described and claimed certain improvements in clamps or grips for connecting the bridgepieces and temples or side holding arms or wires to the lenses of spectacles.
The invention described herein relates to a construction wherein the bridge-pieces are secured to lenses on spectacles by clam ping members integral with each other and also integral with the bridge-pieces.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of spectacles having my improvements applied thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate a clamp or grip for connecting the bridge-piece to the lens and the blank from which the clamp or grip is formed. Figs. t and 5 are plan and side views of a clamp or grip for bridge-pieces. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the blank for the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Fig. 7 is a side view of a third form of clamp or grip for bridge-pieces, and Fig. 8 is a plan view of the blank for the form shown in Fig. 7.
The bridge-piece and clamps or grips for connecting the bridge-piece 10 to the lenses are formed from a blank or single strip, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the blank are provided with projections 8, adapted to form prongs on one of the clamping members, as 2,
. and to bear on one side of the lens, and the finger or prong for the member hearing on the opposite side of the lens is formed by a portion 1 of the blank to form the grip and the parts of the bridge adjacent thereto, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The members 1 and 2 of the clamp or grip are preferably drawn together by a screw 5, although the metal may be sufficiently rigid to obviate the necessity of such additional means for causing the members to grip the lens.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3, 4:, and 5 the double prongs 8 on one of the gripping members, as 2, are formed by wings or lugs 11, projecting laterally from the blank 10, as shown in Fig. 6, and the other gripping member is formed by an extension 14L of the blank beyond the wings 11, such extension being bent to U shape, so as to bring the screw-noles 13 in line with each other and so that the end of the extension will bear upon the lens between the wings or projections 11. In this construction, as will be seen by reference to Figs. 3 and 4, the bridge-piece 10 springs from the points of junction of the wings l1 and is bent backward, so as to form the bridge.
In the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the wings 15, forming the prongs on one of the gripping members, as 2, are at the outer end of the bridge-piece 10, and the latter is divided longitudinally, as at 17, to form a tongue 18, which extends from the portion forming the clamping member 2 and can be bent to U shape, so that the end thereof will lie between the prongs 15 of member 2 and the screw-holes will be in line with each other.
It is characteristic of my improvement that the gripping members which hold the lens are formed integral with each other and also that a portion at least of the spectacle-supports, as the temples or bridgepiece, are formed integral with the clamp or grip.
It is characteristic of the construction of the bridge-piece and the lens-clamps, as shown in Figs. 2 to 8, that one member of each clamp is formed at the end of the bridge-piece and the other member by an extension of the first member. As, for example, in the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the clamp ing members 1 are formed at the ends of the bridgedeco 10, while the other clamping members and the connecting portions 4.- are formed by extensions or continuations of the parts on members 1. The same is true as regards the construction shown in Figs. 4L, 5, 6, except that the members 2, having the prongs 8, are at the end of the bridge-piece .10, while the other clamping members are formed by the extensions or continuations 14. In the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the tongues 18 extend from the portions 2, which form the clamping members at the ends of the bridge-piece.
I claim herein as my invention transverse of the bridge-piece, encl extensions 1. A bridge-piece in combination with U- of the bridge-piece substantially as set forth. shaped clamps integral With the bridge-piece, In testimony whereoflhave hereunto set my one of the members of each clamp being hand.
formed at the ends of the bridge-piece, and
the other member by a bent extension of the first member, substantially as set forth. W'itnesses:
2. A bridge-piece in combination with U- F. E. GAITHER,
shaped clamps formed by bending in planes FRED KIROHNER.
