EZRA E. CHESNEY, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF THREE- FOURTHS TO MADISON R. CHESNEY, ISAAC LA GRANGE, AND CHARLES R. FREDERICKSON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
COMBINATION TYPE-WRITER CABINET AND COPY-HOLDER.
Application filed September 15,1904. Serial No. 224,618.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EZRA E. CHESNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Type-VVriter Cabinets and Copy-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in combination type-writer cabinets and copyholders.
The object of my invention is to provide a type-writer cabinet having a member slidably mounted therein and adapted to contain a type-writer and supplies therefor, a lid or cover mounted on the cabinet, and means by which when the said member is moved inward and outward the'cover may be moved to cover and uncover, respectively, the typewriter and supplies and to open and close the opening through which the slidable member moves.
My invention provides, further,a copy-holding mechanism carried by the cabinet-cover and movable therewith and through the agency of the type-writer-supporting member to different positions suitable for the convenience and wishes of the operator.
My invention provides in the cabinet a movable writing-table which may be quickly adjusted to a position desired and which may serve to control in a measure the rearward movement of the type-writer support.
Other novel features are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cabinet, showing the drawer withdrawn, the writing-table partlybroken away and moved to its outer position, a copy mounted on the copy-holder, and the cover or lid in the elevated position. In this view is shown a type-writing machine mounted in the drawer, and the writing-table is shown in dotted lines moved at an angle to its usual position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation view showing the lid or cover raised and the indicating-bar of the copy-holder disposed in position against the copy. Fig. 3 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, the drawer and lid being shown in the open position and the writing-table fully withdrawn. The drawer Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
and lid and some of the parts connected therewith are shown in dotted lines in the closed position. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the cabinet shown in the closed position. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the dotted line a 5 of Fig. 2, showing the parts in the positions shown in solid lines in Fig. 3. In this view in dotted lines the writing-table is shown in its rearmost position, having its rear edge resting against the rear side of the cabinetcasing so as to resist the rearward movement of the drawer.
Similar characters of reference denote similar parts.
The cabinet-casing is preferably of a substantially upright rectangular form having a vertical back 1, secured at its lower end to the rear edge of a horizontal base 2, to opposite ends of which are secured, respectively, the lower ends of the vertical sides 3, which are disposed parallel with each other, the upper forward corners being cut at an angle to the perpendicular, thus forming a support for the under side of the lid or cover 4, com prising, preferably, a flat board hinged at its upper or rear edge to the forward edge of the horizontal top 5 of the casing.
Below the inclined edges of the sides 3 is a horizontallyslidalole member comprising, preferably, a drawer 6, having a plurality of compartments, one of which is adapted to contain a type-writing machine 7 and the other compartments being adapted to contain supplies. The drawer 6 is provided at each end with a horizontal longitudinal groove 8, fitted to a guiding-strip 9, secured to the adjacent side 3 of the casing. The forward end of the drawer 6 is supported on the upper edge of a transverse strip or board 10, the ends of which are secured, respectively, to the sides 3 of the casing. On the under side of the bottom of the drawer 6 is secured a stop 11, adapted to strike the rear side of the strip 10 for limiting the forward movement of the drawer. On the forward side of the drawer is provided a handle 12. Below the strip 10 are two doors 12, hinged, respectively, at their outer vertical edges to the forward sides of the sides 3. Below the doors 12' is a bar or strip 13, secured at its ends in a horizontal position to the sides 3, respectively.
Upon the inner or under side of the lid or cover 4, adjacent its respective ends, are secured two projections 14, to which are pivotally secured, respectively, the upper ends of two bars or links 15, the other ends of which are pivoted, respectively, to opposite sides of the drawer 6, near the upper side and adjacent the rear thereof. The links 15 serve to impart movement from the drawer 6 to the lid or cover 4. By pulling out the drawer 6 to the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 3 the links 15 will force the lid or cover 4 to the position shown in solid lines. By forcing the drawer to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 the lid or cover will be forced to a closed position or to the position shown in dotted lines in the said figure. The drawer 6 is of a suflicient height that it will, with the lid 4, close the opening provided in the forward side of the casing above the strip 10.
On adjacent sides of a longitudinal partition-board 16, mounted on the upper side of the bottom of the drawer 6 and one side of the drawer, are mounted two horizontal forwardly-extending guide- bars 17 and 18, respectively. These guide-bars serve to support a slidable horizontal writing-table 19, one side edge of which is longitudinally grooved to fit the bar 17, the table resting at its other edge upon the upper side of the bar 18. The table 19 may be drawn forward to the position shown in Fig. 1 when it is designed to use it for writing, or it may then be swung laterally at its forward end to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, if such position is more desirable. When not in use, the writing-table 19 may be forced rearwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, with its rear edge resting against the forward side of the back 1. In such position it will by its weight and friction with the bars 17 and 18 serve to prevent the rearward movement of the drawer 6 when the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 1, with the lid or cover inc-lined forwardly. Thus the drawer 6 maybe moved to the position desired for properly positioning the copy 20 mounted on the copy-holder, as hereinafter described.
A plurality of horizontal parallel boards 21 may be secured one above the other below the top of the casing, with their ends secured, respectively, to the sides 3 of the casing above the drawer 6. By securing between said boards 21 and the top of the casinga number of vertical parallel boards 22, a number of pigeonholes may be provided for the reception of letters, documents, and similar things.
On the inner side of the lid or cover 4, adjacent one end thereof, is secured the outer end of a horizontal copy-holding bar 23, preferably of resilient material and flexible toward and from the lid .4. The copy-tablet 20 is mounted, as shown in Fig. 1, with the leaves folded over the bar 23, which by its resiliencypermits the leaves to be turned and inserted between the bar and the lid 4 or withdrawn from behind the bar. A bar 24 has its outer end pivoted on a transverse pin or screw 25, mounted in a block 26, secured to the inner side of the lid 4 at the end of the lid opposite the one to which the bar 23 is secured. The bar 24 is movable on the pin or screw 25 parallel with the inner side of the lid 4 and is capable of being flexed toward and from said lid. To the free end of the bar 24 is pivoted, by means of a transverse pin 27, a lineindi cating bar 28, which bar is secured rigidly to the pin 27, the pin being rotatively mounted in a transverse hole provided in the bar 24. The outer end of the pin 27 is provided with a head by which the pin is seized for the purpose of swinging the bar 24 to and fro.
In operating the copy-holding mechanism just described the tablet or copy 20 is mounted on the bar 23, the leaves of the tablet being turned to the position desired, after which the outer end of the pin 27 is seized and the bar 24swung over the tablet to a position in which the indicating-bar will indicate the proper line on the tablet. When it is desired to incline the lid 4 forward, as is shown in Fig. 1-, the bar 24 and line-indicating bar 28 are positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the outer sheets of the tablet being permitted to hang vertically in front of the indicating-bar 28. By moving the drawer 6 forward or backward to the proper position the lid may be swung so as to position the tablet to suit the convenience of the operator. When it is desired to close the cabinet, the drawer 6 is forced inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4,
thus forcing, by means of the links 15, the
lid 4 to the position shown in Fig. 4, in which position it will close the opening in the cabinet above the drawer 6 and at the same time conceal the copy-tablet 20 and the contents of the drawer and desk. When the parts are positioned as shown in Fig.4, the operator may arise from a chair placed in front of the cabinet without interference with the drawer. When it is desired to operate the type-writing machine. the operator, being seated in a chair placed in front of the cabinet and not shown, grasps the handle 12 and draws the drawer 6 forward to a position in which the lid 4,'through the intermediacy of the links 15, will be swung to the open position with the inner side of the lid 4 exposed to the front. By suitably moving the drawer the copy may be positioned as already described, so as to be readily read by the operator.
My invention may be modified in many ways without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
