Description

No. 796,815 PATENTED AUG. 8, 1905.
F. W. GOY. TWIN STANDARDS SIMULTANEOUSLY ADJUSTED.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 25, 1904.

FREDERICK W. GOY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES F. BROWN, TRUSTEE, OF READING, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed July 25,1904:- Serial No. 217,932.
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. (101, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twin Standards Simultaneously Adjusted, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to means for adjustably supporting a bench, seat, table, or other structure at a plurality of points and adjusting the several supporting members simultaneously to vary the height of the thing supported without tipping or inclining it.
The invention has for its object to provide simple and effective means for simultaneously adjusting or changing the position of an article supported at a plurality of points; and it consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an elongated piano-stool or duet-bench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a represents an elongated body, such as the seat of a duet-bench.
b I) represent screw-threaded standards or standard members affixed to the bench a and projecting downwardly therefrom.
c 0 represent rotary standard members formed as nuts engaging the threads of the members I) b, and d d represent base standard members, which are formed to support the rotary members 0 c and to receive the lower portions of the members I) b. The base members are provided with suitable supporting-legs e and are connected by a bar or strut f.
f is a casing which incloses the rotary members 0 and the chain hereinafter referred to.
The rotary members 0 are provided with sprocket-teeth 0, each member 0 constituting a sprocket-wheel as well as a nut. h represents a sprocket-chain engaged with and.
connecting the members 0 c and causing said members to rotate 1n unison when power is applied to either of said members or to the" Each set of members I) c d constitu es an 7 adjustable standard, which forms a part of a supporting structure, the two standards being connected, so that they are necessarily adjusted in unison. The base members havdepending chambered portions (1, which receive and conceal the lower portlons of the threaded members I), so that the supporting structure has a neat and finished appearance.
Power may be applied to the chain by means of a driving sprocket-wheel i, which is supported between the two ad ustable standards and is affixed to a vertical shaft 7. Said shaft has a bevel-gear 7c, meshing w th a bevel-gear m on a horizontal shaft n, which is provided with a hand-wheel 0, located within reach of a person sitting on the bench. Provision is thus made for applying power to the chain at the central portion of the bench.
I do not limit myself to the application of the described invention to a duet-bench. A supporting structure embodying my invention and comprising a plurality of standards, each including a base member, a rotary member formed as a nut, and a non-rotary screw-threaded member engaged with said nut, together with suitable means for simultaneously rotating said rotary members, may be employed for any purpose to which it s applicable without departing from the spirit of my invention.
It will be observed that the intermediate sprocket-wheel i is so located in the casing f as to deflect the chain and keep it under suitable tension so as to be engaged by said sprocket i. The casing f is e ongated, and the two sprockets c c are at the ends thereof, and the sprocket L is substantially at the center of the casing and practically in a stralght line with the sprockets c c. The chain, however, is not so arranged that the sprocket i would be between its two stretches, the chain being deflected and the sprocket "L en gaging it at the outer side of one stretch thereof. Hence the chain is kept under tension, as above described. Furthermore, it is to be noted that the means for varying the height of the body a is located substantially at the center of the supporting structure, so that the hand-wheel 0 is located in reach of either of two persons who may be sitting upon the body A.
I claim A duet-bench comprising a structure hav-' ing two standard base members having a casing supported by their upper ends, two rotary internally-threaded members supported by said casing and having sprockets at their upper ends, a seat, two non-rotary externallythreaded members affixed to the seat and engaged with said rotary members, a sprocketchain engaged with the sprockets of said rotary members, an intermediate sprocket in said casing and located substantially on a s r ght line connecting the sprockets of said rotary threaded members and engaging the outer side of one stretch of the chain, and a hand-wheel mounted at a point substantially centrally of the bench and having connec tions with the intermediate sprocket to opcrate the latter.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK W. COY.
