WILLIAM Meneer, or WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
Letters Patent No. 79,677, oZatetZA July 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BENDING FIFTH-WHEELS.
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM MGRGEY, ofthe city of Wilmingtonr'in the State ofDelaware, have invented 'a nevir 'and useful Machine for' Bending Fifth-Wheels and clip-circles of carriages, and'sizing and lining-clips; 'end I doghereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in 'which- Figure 1-is a-side view, and
Figure 2 n plane view of the machine. .A is the table or stand; b is thelevellingplate; D, turn-table; E is theplate for forming circles, and is Afastened to the turn-table by screw-bolts; mis a. moon-shaped lever; F,4sizing and lining lever, in connection with which I use an additional lever at g, for holding down clip-`circle while levelling it ;A t is an eccentric-lever,- with rollers z' and j attached, the roller 7'1 always being Vdetached while bending the clip-circle; c is a slotted slide, provided for extending eccentric-lever k to suit size of turn-tables.
vI construct my bending-machine of iron, except the framework, Which'isof Wood, as is also a portion ofthe surface ofthe table, iitting close .to the cast-iron plate used for levelling. Y
Y When the fclip is heated, I place :it on the turn-table d, against the plate e, force down the leverfin the clip, draw up themoon-shaped leverm, and force the circle against'the plate e, slip a. binding-ring at .s on the leverrsf and m, Which'then'form-a firm handle. I then hammer the clip up to lever Fwhich formstheexact size of and brings the clip on Aaline withthe axle of the lcarriage for which it is made. I then draw up the eccentric-roller bearing on the turn-table vl, with roller 7' raised or detached, and having sete. lever in place at y, draw around my trn-table, which forms a perfect .circle of the olip-wheel, until I come to lever at g; then@l draw down lever into the clip at g, throw 'the eccentric-lever out of the way, which gives me al clear table. I
then press down with the lever at g, and 'hammerout the twist in clip-circl In bending full circles, I remove`- the moon from themcon-lever, use a lever of the' same shape without a Ymoon, lcatcl 1 the plain iron between the 'two' ll`evers,'take off-lever at g, move round the leccentric-lever z with roller j brought down by means of lever o, slipa bending-ring on turn-table levers, and by making one revolution, it gives me a perfect levell circle. I do not confine' myself to one `size of .tunp-tablesor plates, but use' such sizes as may be found necesrsaryrfor the work, operating with the slotted slide. 7c to accommodate the eccentric-level; to theturn-table.-
'What I claim as my invention, and desire to secureiby Letters Patent, is
The combination of the turn-table d,levellingplate Zi, circle-plate e, the levers m, F, y, h, and O, rollers z" andy', and slotted slide-7c, constructed and'arranged as, hereinbefore described, as a. circlleor elliptic bendingmachine, for bending fifth-wheels and clip-circles of'carriages, and sizing and lining clips.
