Description

@gina taten garant @fitta ANDREW '.LMOORE, SAMUEL BLEISTEIN, AND SAMUELS. SHIRK, OE LEB- ANON, PENNSYLVANIA.
' Letters raient N5. 79,676, ma July v 186s'.
I-MPEOVED METHGD `OE GUTTING- BOOTS.
TO ALL WHOM rr MAY CONOERN: n' l e it known vthat we, ANDREW J. MOORE, SAMUEL BLErsrEIN, and SAMUEL S.SH1nn,of Lebanon, inthe county of Lebanon, and State. of Pennsylvania, have invented'a new and improved Method of Cutting Boots and we do hereby deelarethatv the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga part of this-specification, in which- Figure 1 is a View of the upper side of the improved pattern.
Figure 2 shows the shape of the leather `when out and ready to be made up.
Figure is a side view of a boot made up by my improved method.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin the severaltigures.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of markingxout and cutting the uppers and legs of boots, whereby an adjustablepattern can be employed, having ma'rked permanently upon it scales cfgures, corresponding to the several measures .required to be taken to tla boot togthe foot, so that, for any given measure, the pattern 'eanbe adjusted. and set, rand, when so set, it will give the required size and shape for marking off and cutting, from onepieoe ot leather or other material, the entire upper and leg of a -boot in one piece, asuwill be hereinafter described. p 4
To enable others skilled inA the` art to understand our invention, we will describe its construction and operation.
- One of the objects of our invention is to 'so.shape a piece of leather, orV other material suitable for making the upper and leg cfa boot, then whensuch piece is folded, as will be hereinafter shown, it will form the entire' upper and leg of a boot, thus requiring lless stitching, rand-affording greater strength and durability, becausethere will be very few seams to give out. Another Object of onr invention'V is to'provide a pattern, which can be readily adjusted,`to'give the required shape and size for draughting and cutting theA entire upper and leg of a boot of one piece of material. l i' i V' A Inthe acco'mpanyingdrawings, iig. 1 represents the pattern, by means Ofrwhioh the work is marked out. This pattern consists of thin plates ofimetal oriother material, properly shaped and put together, so as to serve collectivelyas a guide to' a pencil or knife, in marking or cuttingputA the work. The parts A and C are'united to a imclcplate,` B,I by means of pins passing through oblong slots, as shown, one o`f which .pins is screw-cut,
i and provided with a. thumbscrew, a, by means oi' which the two plates Aand Cfc'an be adjusted and set forxany required size of the frontpart of the -leg and instep-s`eam, as shown at V V1, in iig.-2.
lrhe plates C, H, I, D, and E 'are also united by pins ,passing lthrough oblong slots, and provided with a clamping-nut, b, by means of which these several plates can be secured rigidly together when adjusted, for giving' the required size of, the back portion V2 df the leg.` The plates J J, K K, LF, and S are attached to the front extension of the plate D, and adapted for giving the required size andshape of the frontportion T. orf theuppcr. y I y v V-These plates last named, with asmall plate, G, are suitably slottedpas shown, and provided withvah adjusting-serewnut, c. i i V I It `will be seen, by reference to the drawing, fig. 1, that the several plates are so connected together that, when the nuts a, b, and c are loosened, the pattern can be made larger orsinaller, in every direction, by adjusting the several plates; and, by prvidingthe back plates, B, E, and S, and also the front plates, J J, with properly-graduated scales, any given size and shape of pattern canbe made.
In taking a measure oi' the foot, the 'first' measure is .around .the heel and-instep, as indicatedby red line a: :vin iig. 3. This measure corresponds to the parts crossed by redline a: :v in fig. 2, and will be indicatedby the figureswhieh are expo/sed upon pla'tes B and E.
l The nextmeasures are atxY Y, Z Z, iigf, and indicated in igfl by red lines Y Y, Z These measures are indicated uponl'theplates J, J, and-S bythe figures and graduated marks thereon.
Fig. 2 s'intended to represent the shape of a.' piece ofleather, cut by the pattern, before this piece is folded; and the dotted lines on this piece indicatethe cre-ases or points where it is to be folded.
The parts V, V, and T are brought together -by folding said piece' of leather so that there will be a seam extendingr down one side ofthe leg ofthe boot, and intersecting another seam, which extends around the instep to the opposite side ofthe boot, and which terminates at a, short senin, which extends down to the lower 'edge of the upper or the solo of the boot. i
It will be seen that a piece, T', is formed at the centre of the upper, T, which piece covers the seam formed by uniting the lower frontedge of the leg-portion to. theupper, and not only makes a. nent finish, but it strengthens the seam ct this point.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The pattern, composed of the several parts herein shown, said parts being constructed, and arranged, and operating as herein described, for producing the upper and leg of a. boot in the form shown in fig. 2 of tlc drawings, or in an equivalent form, as set forth.
2. The piece G, in combination with the pieces D Fof the pattern, substantially as described.
3. A boot-uppernnd leg, T T', V V1 V2, made in one piece,.produced as described.

SAMUEL BLEISTEIN, SAMUEL S. SHIRK.
