Description

HENRY D. CHAPMAN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. i
MACHINE FOR CLIMBING- PQLES.
Specification 'of Letters Patent No. 7,966, datedlVIarch V117 1851.
T0 all whom t may concern i Be it knownthat I, HENRY D. CHAPMAN, of the city of Baltimore and State of Mary-A land, `have invented a new and useful Apparat-us for Ascending Telegraph-Poles, Masts of Vessels, Spires,i&c. `and I do here by declare thatI the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Letter A is a grappling composed of iron and other matter. i
Figures l, 1, are sandals into which the climber confines his feet by means of straps and buckles. Figs. 2, 2, are prongs being segments of a circle. Fig. 3 is a. point or hinge whereby the grappling is expanded or contracted. 4, 4, are axles upon which the sandals are mounted. y
Letter B, is a. grappling to be used by the hands the same in every particular as letter A, with the exception that 4, 4, there are handlesmade of wood for the hands instead of sandals.
The process by which the climber should proceed is to place the grappling A, around the pole or mast which he Wishes to ascend at the base of the same (see Fig. A) conlining his feet rmly in the sandals l, l; next he takes the grappling B, in his hands lascending the post in this manner viz: `by
`extending his hands upward as high `as he can, then closing the grappling rmly togetherand throwing his whole weight upon his hands he will find himself firmly supported by his hands; then `by opening his legs `a little and drawing them toward his hands and closing them again hewill find himself supported by his feet. He can thus ascend to any height with ease having the apparatus so much at command that he can stop at any, point he pleases, pass around the pole `at his option and when he wishes to perform anything with his hands he has only to raisehimself astride of the grappling which he has in his hand, when he finds himself at liberty to use his hands in anyway he chooses.
That I claim as my invention, and for which` I desire to secure Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the grappling levers` with the sandals and handles, for the purpose of climbing telegraph poles, masts, &c., and holding the climber at any desired height, so as to give him free use of his hands when at rest, as herein described and' represented.
