Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DAYTON FREDRICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeton, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Blow and Plunger Heads for Glass-Blowing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to glass-blowing machines; and it consists of a combined plunger and blow head and the means for operating the same whereby I am enabled to effect the operation of mechanically recessing the charge of glass and positioning the blow-head for the blowing operation by the use of a single mechanical element, and thereby decrease the amount of time necessary to press and blow the article of hollow ware under process of manufacture and at the same time automatically present the proper member for engagement with the charge of glass or the mold.
My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved blow-head and plunger carrier and the means for operating the same, the latter being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a enlarged sectional elevation of the blow-heads, taken on the line a a, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the blow-heads, taken on the line b b, Fig. 1, illustrating details of my invention.
The main object of my invention is to provide a common carrier for the blow-heads and plungers, such members being secured to arotatable head suitably journaled in a frame and provided with automatically-operating means that will place one or the other of said members in the operative position each time the carrier is moved.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a hub or head carried by a spindle or shaft 2, journaled in bearings 3, suspended by arms 4 from a sliding frame 5, such frame havingjgrooved projections 6, engaging rods 7, forming part of the main frame of the machine, which rods support a cross member 8, carrying a cylinder 9. These rods form a guideway for the movement of the frame 5, and such movement is accomplished by means of a piston 10, mounted in the cylinder, to the opposite faces of which motive fluid under pressure is sup lied, such piston having a piston-rod 11, which is connected directly to the sliding frame 5.
The hub or head 1, which is keyed at 1 to the spindle or shaft 2, carries a pair of plungers 2 and a pair of blow-head members 3 the plungers and blow-heads being provided with threaded stems 4 adapted to threaded recesses 5 in said hub. The particular form of blow-head for use in connection with my present invention and the manner of operating the same is fully shown and described in my prior application, filed January 29, 1903,

The rotatable hub 1, carrying the plungers and blow-heads, is normally locked by means of a pin 6*", carried by one of the bearings 3 and arranged to enter a recess 7 a in said hub, said pin being held to it seat by means of a spring 8*, encircling its stem. The
in 6 has a head 9*, and engaging this head is a trip-lever 10, pivoted at 11 to one of the bearings 3, said trip-lever having a projection 12, operated by a depending rod 13, carried by the cross member 8 as the sliding frame 5, carrying the plungers and blowheads, is raised. This rod 13 is fixed in proper position with relation to the sliding frame, so that upon the ascent of the latter the end 14 of the rod engages the projection of the triplever. This action withdraws the locking pin 6*, and the hub or head carrying plungers and blow-heads is free to be turned. A ratchet-wheel 19 is carried by the shaft or spindle 2 on the other side of the hub, and when said hub rises with the frame 5 this ratchet-wheel is engaged by a pawl 20, fixed against vertical movement and controlled by a spring 21 within a casing 22, carried by one of the bearings 3. After the locking-pin 6 is released the ratchet is operated by the pawl, thereby turning the hub or head so as to bring a plunger or blow head, as the case may be, into position for use.
The hub or head 1 is provided with passages 12, adapted to register with a crosspassage 13 in the spindle or shaft 2 when either blow-head is in position for engage ment with a mold, such passages thereby providing a through-opening between the with a nipple 21, to which a tube 22 (shown in dotted lines,) extending from the source of air-supply, can be connected. The cock is mounted at the center of the rotating shaft or spindle 2, and the casing of said cock is fixed against rotation by suitable'means, the plug 16 of the same having a port 23, which is alternately opened and closed by the rotation of the hub or head 1 as the plunger and blowhead structure is raised, the opening of said cock being coincident with the positioning of either blow-head. The nipple 21 leadingfrom said casing, is held against movement by a U-shaped bracket 24:, secured to the sliding frame 5 of the machine, and to this nipple the hose or tube 22 leading from the source of air-supply, is attached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent 1. The combination in a glass-blowing machine, of a rotatable hub, a support for the same, plungers carried by said hub, blowheads also carried by said hub and alternating with the plungers, and means for rotating said hub to bring the plungers and blowheads into operative position.
2. The combination in a glass-blowing machine, of a rotatable hub, a support for the same, plungers carried by said hub, blowheads carried by. said hub and alternating with the plungers, means for rotating said hub to bring the plungers and blow-heads into operative position, and provision for supplying air under pressure to said blowheads.
3. The combination in a glass-blowing machine of a hub, a support in which said hub is rotatably mounted, said hub having a horizontal axis, plungers carried by said hub, blow-heads also carried by said hub, and means for rotating said hub to bring the plungers and blow-heads into operative position.
4. The combination in a glass-blowin ma chine, of a hub, a support in which sai hub is rotatably mounted, said hub having a horizontal axis, plungers carried by said hub,
blow-heads also carried by said hub, means for rotating said hub whereby the plungers and blow-heads may be brought into operative position alternately, and means for raising and lowering the hub independently of the means for rotating the same.
5. The combination in a glass-blowing machine, of a hub, a support for the same, a spindle carried by said hub and rotatable therewith, blow-head members carried by said hub, said hub having through-openings communicating with said blowhead members, said spindle having openings communicating with said hub members, and means for supplying said blow-head members with air under pressure.
6. The combination in a glass-blowing machine, of a hub, a vertically-sliding support for the same, means for moving the same up and down, a spindle carried by said hub and rotatable therewith, blow-head members carried by said hub, said hub having throughopenings communicating with said blowhead members, said spindle having openings communicating with said hub members, and means for supplying said blowhead members with air under pressure.
7. The combination of the hub, a support for the same, a shaft or spindle secured to said hub and rotatable within said support, blow-head members carried by said hub, the latter having through-openings communicating with said members, a cock or valve mounted on the end of the s indle, the latter having a passage exten ing from said valve or cook, and in communication with the passages of the hub members, and provision for opening and closing said cock as the blow head members are alternately brought into and out of the operative position.
8. The combination of the hub, a support for the same, a shaft or spindle secured to said hub and rotatable within said support,

latter having through-openings communieating with said members, a cock or valvemounted on the end of the spindle, the latter having a passage extendingfrorn said valve or cock, and in communication with the through-openings of the hub members, means for raising and lowering the hub and simultaneously changing the position of the blow-head members, and provision for opening and closing said cock as the blowhead members are alternately brought into and out of operative position.
9. The combination of the rotatable hub, blowheads carried thereby, means for rais ing and lowering the hub, means for automatically turning the hub during a part of its vertical movement to bring the blowheads into operable position, means for supplying air under pressure to said blow-heads, and automatic means for effecting a communication between the source of air-supply and the blow-head when the latter is in the operative position.
