SPIRIT-LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed September 10, 1903. Serial No.172,555.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, ROBERT HENERY KETCH- UM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Spirit-Level, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a spirit-level, consisting of a mechanism for adjusting and securing the spirit level glass to the'level-stalk at different angles, in which two movable disks with sight-holes in them bear on either side of level-stalk and are bound together with binding-screws passing through one disk and entering lugs secured to the opposite disk, the outer flanges of said disks exerting a clamping force on either side of level-stalk when said binding screws are turned in. 4
The objects of my invention are, first, to facilitate the adjustment of the parts, and, second, to facilitate the application of the glassadjusting mechanism to any straight edge of suitable width. I attain these objects by a mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the entire mechanism; Fig. 2, the inside view of disk to which spirit-level glass is secured.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In the accompanying drawings,0 is the levelstalk, provided with a circular opening 0, countersunk upon either side of the stalk. Fitted within these countersinks, respectively, are the flanges n n of the annular disks a a and 0 0. The diska a is provided with an annular rib 1 nearrying at opposite sides of the opening therein laterally-projecting lugs b 6, each having athreaded opening at its extremity, while the disk 0 0 is similarly provided with an annular rib and lugs d d, each lug having a radial aperture which is designed to receive one end of the level-glass e. The disk 0 0 is also provided with countersunk openings (2 d.
Disk 0 0, with its spirit-level glass 6 secured to the lugs cl cl, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) is secured to disk a a by means of binding-screws ff, passing through the openings d d of disk a a and entering the threaded apertures in the lugs Z2 Z) of disk 0 0. The outer flanges n n n at pressure on either side of exert a clamping 1) when bindinglevel-stalk 0 0 (see Fig. screws f f are turned in, thus fastening the mechanism securely in place. When bindingscrews f f are loosened, the level-glass 6 with its mechanism can be turned to bring spiritlevel glass at desired angle with edge of stalk 0 0. Sight-hole P P allows the unobstructed view of spirit-level glass 0. (See Figsl and 2.)
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A level glass holding and adjusting mechanism, consisting of two annular disks each having a sightopening therein, and an annular rib carrying two laterally-extending lugs, respectively, at opposite sides of said opening, the lugs of one disk having alined transverse apertures and those of the other disk having in their end faces threaded apertures adapted to register with corresponding unthreaded apertures in the body of the disk' first named, binding-screws inserted in these registering apertures, and a level-glass supported in the alined apertures in the lugs of the other disk, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a level-stalk having the circular aperture therethrough, of the glass holding and adjusting mechanism mounted in said aperture and consisting of two annular disks each having a sight-opening therein and an annular rib carrying two laterallyextending lugs, respectively, at opposite sides of said opening, the lugs of one disk having alined transverse apertures, and the lugs of the other disk having in their end faces threaded apertures adapted to register with corresponding unthreaded apertures in the body of the disk first named, bindingscrews inserted in these registering apertures whereby the two disks may be clamped against the stock, and alevel-glass supported in the alined apertures in the lugs of the other disk, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RO BERT HENERY KETOHUM.
