UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. BAKER, OF NORTH ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, AS SIGNOR TO R. F. SIMMONS COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
SEPARABLE FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed May 23,1905- Serial No. 261.772.
To (ZZZ whom, if? Duty concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to separable fasteners particularly adapted for concealed use, and has for its objects strength, cheapness, and simplicity.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bracelet equipped with my novel fastener; Figs. 2 and 3, top and side elevations, respectively, of the lever-tube; Figs. 4 and 5, similar elevations, respectively, of the latch and its block; Figs. 6, 7, and 8, longitudinal sections on linear in of Fig. 1, showing the parts respectively in engaged, partially engaged, and disengaged positions; and Fig. 9, adetail view of thelever. I Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the drawings, A and B represent the tubular wings of an ordinary concealed-joint bracelet, provided at their adjacent extremities with semicircular cuttings to form a circular opening 0 in the top of the closed bracelet. In the end of the wing A and projecting beyond the same is fixed, by solder or frictionally, a curved tube a, elliptical in crosssection and having anend wall (0, provided with a' rectangular opening a A circular perforation o in the upper portion of the tube registers with the opening 0 in the wings. Upon a pin a traversing the tube a and fixed in its walls, is a lever c with a pointed free extremity c and a shoulder 0 upon its lower portionadjacent its fulcrum. A projection 0 upon the upper margin of the lever traverses the openings (4 and 0 and has the usual nailchannel 0* in its upper surface. In the adjacent end of the other wing B is soldered or otherwise secured the base d of a spring-arm (5, provided upon its extremity with a barbed The base (Z has a perforahead or hook (Z tion (Z3 to loosely admit the bent or hooked end c of a flat bar 6, which has upon its outer end an elliptical flange, wall, or lug c with an oblong opening a to permit the passage and free vertical vibration of the spring-arm cZ. By virtue of the loose engagement of the hooked end 0 with the base CZ the Wall is pivotally connected with the spring-arm. When the spring-arm. and adjacent parts are assembled, the wall 0 is some distance within the end of the wing B.
When thewings A B are in engaged position, the wing B overlaps the tube a and the extremity of the lever 0 is retained in elevated position by the head of the arm d. The head d engages the inner face of the wall a, as shown in Fig. 6. To disengage the parts, the projection c is depressed, thereby forcing the head of the arm d out of engagement with the wall a, as illustrated in Fig. 7. The parts when disengaged are as shown in Fig. 8, wherein the point 0 is retained in elevation above the plane of the opening a by virtue of the shoulder 0 The head (Z is retained against excessive elevation by the wall 6 Having described my invention, what I claim is 1.' A separable fastener of the class described comprising two engaging portions, one member comprising a tube, a wall upon the end of the tube provided with an opening, a lever pivotally mounted in the tube, a spring-arm fixedly mounted in the other portion, a wall pivotally connected with the spring-arm and provided with an opening through which the spring-arm passes, and a hook upon the free extremity of the spring-arm adapted to engage the inner surface of the tube-wall.
2. In a bracelet, a catch for its wings, the same comprising a lever pivotally mounted within the hollow end of one of the wings, and a spring-arm provided with a barbed head secured at one end within the hollow end of the other Wing, the adjacent ends being provided with openings for the movement of the springarm, the said spring-arm tending to retain its head in engagement with the end of the ad ja-.
cent wing.
3. In a bracelet, a catch for its wings, the same comprisinga lever provided with a pointed free extremity pivotally mounted in one Wing, at supporting-shoulder upon the lever, In testimony whereof I have affixed my siga projection upon the upper margin of the nature in presence of two Witnesses. lever, Walls with openings in the ad acent HENRY R.
