vTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Soot-Catchers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to soot-catchers for use in connection with stoves, more particularly heating-stoves and other furnaces; and it has for its object to provide a device adapted to collect soot and prevent the same from gathering in a Stovepipe or a chimney and through the medium of which the collected soot may be quickly and easily returned to the stove or furnace at intervals to be consumed.
With the foregoingin mind the invention will be fully understood 'from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in vvhich v Figure 1 is a view, partly in vertical sec- 1 tion and partly in elevation, of my novel device as applied. Fig. 2 is a detailvertical section of the device, taken in a plane at right angles to Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device. I

(J is a pipe for connecting the device and the flange around the smoke -opening of a stove or furnace, and D is a pipe for connect-' ing the device and a chlmney-or for conducting smoke and gases from the device to the open air. In connection with the said pipe D, I prefer to employ a pipe E, which terminates at its lower end in a hood F and is designed to conduct foulv air and vapors to the pipe D, and thereby prevent the objectionable dissemination of such air and vapors throughout a house.
The device B constitutes the present and preferred embodiment of my invention and comprises a circular casing b, interposed between and communicating with the pipes O and D and having an aperture 0 in one of its side walls; a disk d, pivoted on said side wall of the casing, Fig. 3, and having an aperture e adapted to be registered with the aperture 0; a bearing f, fixed on the inner side of one of the side walls of casing-b; a shaft g, journaled in the other side wall ,of the casing and terminating at its outer end in a crank It, a

'In the practical use of my novel device it will be observed that by reason of the screen m' formingthe convex surface ofa drum the smoke and other products of combustion from the stove or furnace will pass twice through the Said screen m en route to the pipe D. From this it follows that the soot which is present in the smoke, especially when thefuel used is soft coal, will be caught on the screen m, and hence prevented from gathering in the pipe D and rendering frequentcleaningthereof necessary. when theportions of the screen m opposite the pipes G and D have been covcred with soot, the drum formed by the said screen m, the frames i and j, and the crankshaft 9 may be turned so as to dispose fresh portions of the screen in alinement with the pipes C and D. It will also be observed that when a considerable amount of soot is collected onthe screen m of the rotary drum and the said drum is rotated through the medium of i the crank-shaft the brush n, especially when said brush is pressed inwardly, will operate to remove the soot from the screen m, with the result that the soot will fall back into the stove or furnace and be consumed, and the screen m will be left clear for future use.

A soot-catcher for smoke-conduits,compris ing a casing having an inlet in its lower portion and an outlet in its upper portion,where by it is adapted to form part of an uptake, a bearing fixed at the inner side of one of the upright walls of the casing, a shaft journaled in the other upright wall thereof and having a crank disposed outside of the casing, aframe having a trunnion journaled in the bearing, a frame fixed on the crank-shaft, a cylindrical screen surrounding and connected to the said frames and located between the inlet and the outlet of the casing, and a device arranged to engage the outer side of the said screen.whereby when the screen is rotated it will be cleared of collected soot.
