To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SvEN A. ALLAN STEN- nune, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a residentof San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Fire Apparatus, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to stationary fire sys- IO toms; and its object is to provide a new and improved fire apparatus designed for use on lire-hydrants in streets and other places and arranged to permit firemen, policemen, watchmen, and other authorized persons to make 5 immediate use of the apparatus for extinguishing [ires in the immediate neighborhood in which the hydrant is located.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the-accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which 5 similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is afront elevation of the improvement, showing the easing-door open. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, the casing and other parts being broken out. Fig. 4c is a plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pumpframe. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the pump and the hose and nozzle connections, the section being on the line 6 6 of Fig. 7. Fig. 7 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 7 7 of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is an enlarged front elevation of the switch- 4 board. Fig. 9 is an enlarged sectional rear elevation of the drain-cock in the stand-pipe; and Fig. 10 is a similar view of the same, showing the plug in a draining position.
The frame A of the lire-hydrant is set on a suitable foundation on a street or other place, and the stand-pipe B of the hydrant connects in the usual manner with the street-main or other suitable source of water-supply. The
stand-pipe B is provided with one or more branch pipes B, extending through the sides 5 O of the frame A, and the outer end of each branch pipe is provided with a coupling member to allow of attaching a hose to the branch pipe for street washing, sprinkling, and other purposes, the said branch pipes B being normally closed, however, by suitable screw-caps B as shown.
On the top of the frame A is secured a casing C, having a door C normally locked by a suitable locking device C the key towhich is in the possession of an authorized person, such as a fireman, policeman, watchman, or the like.
In the lower portion of the casing C is arranged a motor D of any approved construc- 6 tion, preferably, however, an electric motor, as shown, thesaid motor serving to actuate a pump, preferably a duplex pump, and for this purpose the shaft D of the motor D is provided with a pinion E (see Fig. 1) in mesh on opposite sides with crank gear-wheels E, connected by pitmen E with cross-heads E", connected with the pistons 0r cylinders I) of the duplex pump, mounted on a frame E", sccured to the inside of the casingC, as plainly shown in the drawings. The suction ends of the cylinders E of the duplex pump are con nected by branch pipes B with the upper end of the stand-pipe B, and the discharge-pipe F of the duplex pump is provided with forks F, connecting with the under side or bottom G of a dome Gr, attached to the top of the casing C, and on the sides of this dome G are arranged branch pipes G adapted to be coupled with a fire-hose and nozzle H, as shown 8 in Fig. 1, the said branch pipes G being normally closed, however, by screw-caps (.1", as indicated in Fig. 6.' The dome G- is provided on the top with an outlet Gr", adapted to be closed by a gate-valve I, having a screw-stem I extending to the outside of the dome and provided with a squared end 1*, to be turned by the operator to move the gate-valve I into an open or closed position, the said gate-valve I when open connecting the dome Or by way of the outlet G with the tubular base J of a nozzle or water-tower device J of any approved construction.
The stand-pipe B below the branch pipes B and above the branch pipes B is provided with a drain-cock B (see Figs. 9 and 10) for connecting or disconnecting the stand-pipe with the branch pipes B or for connecting the branch pipes B with a drain-pipe B", leading from one side of the cock, as indicated in the said drawings. The drain-cock B is under the control of the operator by the use of a handle or hand-wheel B on the stem of the cock B", it being understood that when the cock B" is in the position shown in Fig. 9 connection is had between the stand-pipe B and the branch pipes B", and when the cock is turned to the position shown in Fig. 10 then the stand-pipe B is closed to the branch pipes B and the latter are connected with the drain-pipe B to drain the pump and connected parts thereof. Now when the cook 13" is in an open position, as shown in Fig. 9, the stand-pipe B is connected with the pump-cylinders B", and in case of a fire an authorized person opens the casing and starts the motor D, so that the pump is actuated and pumps the water by the pipes F and F into the dome G, from which the water can be takenby the hose and nozzle H to extinguish the fire or by way of the nozzle or tower device J on the operator opening the valve I.
As shown in the drawings, the nozzle device J is provided. with a hollow fork J, mounted to turn on the tubular base J, and in the said fork'J are journaled the trunnions J of the nozzle J to allow of swinging the latter up and down. On one of the trunnions J is secured adisk J on which is fulerumed a handle J normally pressed on by a spring J to hold the handle in engagement with registering shoulders held on the base J and the fork J so that the nozzle J is locked against turning. Then it is desired to swing the nozzle up or down, the operator swings the hand-1e J outward against the tension of the spring J to unlock the nozzle and to allow the operator to swing the same up or down for the nozzle to direct the stream of water onto the fire. By swinging the handle Jout of engagement with the registering shoulders the fork J becomes unlocked from the base J, and hence the fork and nozzle can be turned on the base as a vertical axis, and in order to facilitate this turning the base J of the nozzle is provided with handles J as indicated in the drawings.
Feed-wires K for the electric motor D connect with the main-line conductors L, leading to a distant supply-station, and the said feedwires K connect with a rheostat N, supported on the frame of the duplex pump, the rheostat being provided with a suitable switchlever N for gradually starting the motor and for stopping the same whenever desired. The feed-wires K are connected by heating-wires K with a switchboard O of any approved construetionand mounted on the frame E, and from the said switchboard lead wires K formed into a coil K", wound around the discharge-pipe F of the duplex pump, so as to heat the water passing from the pump to prevent freezing thereof in cold weather.
If desired, the dome G may be provided with a. pressure-chamber G as indicated in Fig. 6. The pressurechamber when employed is preferably mounted in the dome G in order to take up but little space and add to the compactness of the apparatus. The lower end of the pressure-chamber extends through the central opening in the removable plate Gr, forming the bottom of the dome, and a screwthreaded connecting-joint holds the pressurechamber in place and also unites the pressurechamber with the pipe connection which branches off to the pumps. This pipe connection is shown broken in the lower part of Fig. 6, the connections with the pumps not being shown.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the fire apparatus as shown and described forms a permanent fixture of the water-hydrant. and the fire apparatus can be readily set in motion by an authorized person, so as to force a stream or streams of water by suitable hose and nozzles to the fire to extinguish the same in a comparatively short time. Thus from the foregoing it"will be seen that on the discovery of a lire it is not necessary for the watchman, fireman, or policeman to await the arrival of a fire apparatus from a distant station, butthe fire apparatus on the hydrant can be immediately set in action to pump streams of water, and hence no valuable time is lost.
I do not limit myself to the particular construction of themotor and pump shown and described, as the same may be varied. without deviating from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I .claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A fire apparatus, comprising a fire-hydrant having a stand-pipe connected with the water-main, a pump mounted on the hydrant, a motor for actuating the pump, the'standpipe leading to the suction of the pump, a dome connected with the discharge of the pump andhaving coupling members for engagement by coupling members of the firehose, and a drain-cock in the said stand-pipe for closing the latter to the water-main and for draining the water from the pump, as set forth.
2. A fire apparatus comprising a fire-hyd rant, having a stand-pipe connected with the water-main, a casing fixed on the said hydrant, an electric motor in the said casing, a pump in the casing, driven by the said motor, the said pipe connect ion leading to the suction of the pump, and a dome mounted on the said casing and having its inlet connected with the discharge or outlet of the pump, the
dome having coupling members for engagement by coupling members of the fire-hose, as set forth.
3. A fire apparatus comprising a fire-hydrant, having a stand-pipe connected with the water-main, a casing fixed on the said hydrant, an electric motor in the said casing, a
,pump in the casing, driven by the said motor, the said pipe connection leading to the suction of the pump, a dome mounted on the said casing and having its inlet connected with the discharge or outlet of the pump, the dome having coupling members for engagement by coupling members of the fire-hose, and a nozzle supported on the dome and mounted to swing up and down and to turn on a vertical axis, as set forth.
4- A fire apparatus comprising a fire hydrant, having a stand-pipeconnected with the water-main, a casing fixed on the said hydrant, an electric motor in the said casing, a pump in the casing, driven by the said motor, the said pipe connection leading to the suction of the pump, a dome mounted on the said casing and having its inlet connected with the discharge or outlet of the pump, the dome having coupling members for engagement by coupling members of the fire-hose, a nozzle supported on the dome and mounted to swing up and down and to turn on a vertical axis, and aswitch for the electric motor, to start or stop the same, as set forth.
5. A fire apparatus comprising a fire-hydrant, having a stand-pipe connected with the water-main, a casing fixed on the said hydrant, an electric motor in the said casing, a pump in the casing, driven by the said motor, the said pipe connection leading to the suction of the pump, a dome mounted on the said casing and having its inlet connected with the discharge or outlet of the pump, the dome having coupling members for engagement by coupling members of the fire-hose, a nozzle supported on the dome and mounted to swing up and down and to turn on a vertical axis, and a manually-controlled valve on the said dome, for connecting and disconnecting the dome and the nozzle, as set forth.
6. A fire apparatus comprising a hydrant, having a stand-pipe connected with a watermain, a casing fixed on the said hydrant and into which projects the stand-pipe, an electric motor mounted in the said casing, a pump adapted to be driven by the said motor and having its suction connected with the said stand-pipe, the pump having an outlet for connection with hose and nozzle feeders for the said electric motor, and aheating-current conwith the discharge of the pump, and a drain cock in the said stand-pipe, for closing the latter to the street-main and for draining the water from the pump, as set forth.
