PATENT OFFICE.
THRESHING-GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,888, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed June 20, 1904:. Serial No. 213.333.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FERDINAND RIEDELs- BERGER and ERNST RIEDELsBERGER, farmers, subjects of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Koegsten, near Kussen, in
the Kingdom of Prussia,German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Threshing-Grates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved th reshing-grate having an exchangeable knife by means of which the threshing may be rendered more efiective and the straw may be shortened, the principal object, however, being to prevent the grate from being obstructed, particularly in the case where the straw is damp.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatical representation of our improved threshing-grate, the latter having in this example two knives, of which the first is located between the first and the second of the horizontal ledges and the second between the fifth and sixth of said ledges. Fig. 2 is an enlarged View showing two ledges with a knife between them. Fig. 3 is a front View of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front view of the knife. Fig. 5 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the knife. i
The knife a consists of a steel plate having an angular section, so that it may be assumed to consist of two parts. One of these parts is turned into single or separate projections, forming a kind of teeth and having sharpened edges. The other part is provided with'longitudinal slots Z) and c, by means of which the knife is secured to the grate by bolts d and e. The grate is furnished in known manner with wires m, turning the grate into a kind of net, and the object of the shape of the apertures b and 0 is also to allow of an insertion of the bolts (Z and e in such a manner that the wires :12 can never form an obstacle with respect to the proper fastening of the knife. The situation of such a knife between two ledges of the grate is best to be seen in Fig. 2, the fiat portion of the knife being located just between the two ledges, whereas the sharpened portion, or, more precisely, the sharpened portions, extend beyond the lower of the two ledges, so as to extend practically nearly in a radial direction. The bolts d and c are secured in place in known manner by means of a bolt f held between the ledges and by nuts screwed upon the threaded rear ends of said bolts. The straw worked upon in the apparatus is reduced in length by means of said knives even if it should be in a damp condition, and parts of the straw are ripped up, particularly the cars, so that the yield is an extraordinarily profitable one. An obstruction of the grate can occur only if excessively much material is thrown into the machine; otherwise it is absolutely excluded.
A remarkable effect of the above-described new arrangement consists also in the fact that instead of three or four horse powers, as heretofore, only one-horse power is required, as has been established by the trials made with this improved device.
Having now described our invention, what we desire to secure by a patent of the United States'is The combination with a concave grate having longitudinal bars, of a knife located between and parallel with two of the concave bars, said knife having a curved cross-section at one edge and the said curved edge having notches cut in it to form sharp teeth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
