To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. IQOGEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mon: ristown, in the county of Hamblen and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Cow- Pea and SmalLGrain Threshers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for use in threshing wheat, oats, rye, barley and other small grains, and the object of which is to have a combination machine of the character of my cowpea threshing apparatus No. 861,189.
This invention consists of a simple means for converting said cowpea thresher into a grain thresher, having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the apparatus adapted for use in threshing wheat, oats, barley, rye and other small grains. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through a cowpea thresher before being converted to adapt it for threshing small grain. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clamping device. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the detachable concave L and which is designed to take the place of the refeeder and separating grate H in said pea thresher. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the serrated members L upon the concave L.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the casing of the thresher in which the shaft B is j ournaled and upon which the cylinder 0 is mounted and adapted to be driven in any suitable manner not shown. The casing has a removable hood D to allow ready access to be had to the cylinder, when designed, and E is a hood cap made of wood or other suitable material and is designed to cover the front portion of the cylinder when this apparatus is applied for use in threshing small grains.,.t-his.hopd cap. being. held-in place by means. of hooks E. An extension table F, mounted upon the frame, has a hinged portion F, which is connected to the center feed table F and which latter is connected in its downward direction to concave L, properly spaced from the cylinder. Said concave has cross bars L, each apertured for the reception of the thresher tooth L a detail of which is shown in Fig. 5, and which, it will be noted, has deep serrations upon its oppostie faces and upon one edge. This deep serrated tooth has two functions in this apparatus, one to maintain space, and the other friction that is needed in this Work, which is lost in the construction of a cylinder made to thresh cowpeas from the mown vines, it being found essential for these deep serrations as shown in the tooth L to produce the necessary results at the speed which this cylinder is driven in a cowpea thresher.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be noted that the cowpea thresher shown therein has the member E with teeth E thereon which is removed to be replaced by the brace B, when the apparatus is adapted for use in threshing small grain, and H designates a separating grate which is pivot ally mounted upon the rod Y, but which is removed when the apparatus is converted for the purpose set forth. This concave L is hinged to the back concave G by means of said rod Y passing through registering lugs in the two concaves which also holds them in place on said machine. The second concave G has three rows of serrated blades G which are set at inclinations and in rows below and posterior to the cutter head and,
between which blades G and blades C of the cutter head are adapted to turn, as shown in Patent No. 861,189.
R is a substantial iron brace or blank concave that reaches from side to side of said machine and takes the place of concave E in said cowpea thresher after its removal and is securely bolted to said machine, thus giving security to cylinder and ample room under it for feeding grain of any character with this apparatus,
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown the cowpea thresher, parts of which are removed, to allow the apparatus to be adapted for threshing small grain and in which the concave E is removed and replaced by the 2 I I r '7 r 1,169,040
brace R also the refeeder and separating section and a central feed table hingedly con- 10 grate H is removed, for the reception of connected thereto and to said pivotal concave. cave L in this apparatus, which is held in In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my place by rod Yas shown in said drawing. 7 signature in presence of two witnesses.
