NON-BINDING SLElGH-BUNKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,861, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed August 13, 1904. Serial No. 220,643.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DUNCAN I-IALsTnAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gheboygan, in the county of Oheboygan and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Non-Binding Sleigh-Bunker, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sleighs; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a sleigh wherein the runnerswill turn under the beam, and thereby prevent the bunker from binding under any circumstances, whether the load thereon is evenly distributed or not, and of such nature that it may be attached to any sleigh now manufactured; second, to provide a sleigh that will start easily, and, third, a sleigh that will steer more easily. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the entire sleigh, showing the entire mechanism in operative position therein; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section view of the sleigh, and Fig. 3 represents a cross-section of the front sleigh.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A metal knuckle D fits over the top of each of the runners R and is fastened thereon by two bolts. To the upper side of D and to its center is permanently attached the swivelpin L, which runs through a corresponding hole in a metal plate C, which is bolted on the lower side of the wooden beam N. This provides a swivel whereby the runners will turn under the beams. M is the bunker upon which the load rests and instead of being rocked on the under side, as at present, can be made straight, so that it will bear upon the whole length of the beam N. This bunker is attached to the beam by a king-bolt K, running through the center, and E is a bunkerlock, consisting of an iron bolt .running into the beam N, with the upper part projecting to hold the bunker M stationary when loaded, one of such bunker-locks being placed on either side of the king-bolt K. These locks are so madethat they can be pulled out of their sockets in the beam, so as to allow the bunker to swing horizontal with the sleigh when empty, if so desired.
B is a sheave attached to the upper part of the beam N in the front sleighs only, there being two of such sheaves, one on either end of the beam.
F is a purchase-tongue attached to and running from the roll P of the front sleigh to the center'of the front of the beam N and is attached thereto by a clevis H. To the front of the purchase-tongue is mortised and attached the main tongue S. Near the center of the purchase-tongue is bolted a link 0, to Which is attached two chains A, one running through the right sheave and attached to the left eyebolt J on the hind runner and the other running through the left sheave and attached to the right eyebolt J in the hind runner, so that by turning the main tongue either one way or the other it not only starts the front runners, but also the hind ones at the same time, (see the dotted lines,) the runners turning on the swivels attached to them, as heretofore described.
T is a stay chain or cable running from each of the eyebolts of the front runner to a link O near the center of the purchase-tongue F. These stay-chains are only used when the sleighs are empty and it is desired to turn the bunker in a horizontal position. The chains will then keep the runners and beams in a stationary position.
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Link-bars Gr are loosely connected at their ends to the ends of the bolsters M to insure a united movement of the bolsters.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the character described, comprising front and rear sleds, each consisting of a pair of runners R, link-bars P loosely connecting their forward ends, knuckles D, pivot-pins L, main bolsters N, sand-bolsters M pivoted upon the bolsters N, link-bars G loosely connecting the ends of the bolsters M,
