TUNING-HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,772, dated July 18, 1905.
Application filed January 24, 1905. Serial No. 242,551.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL B. BEDIANT and l/VILLIAM B. ELLSWORTH, citizens of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tuning-Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides a novel form of tuning-hammer for turning and otherwise adjusting tuning-pins of pianos and similar musical instruments.
The invention embodies, primarily, a peculiar form of turning device adapted to be constantly rotated by a suitable handle withoutremoval thereof from the pin after said device has been once placed in position.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes'in the structure and minor details Without departing from the spirit or essential'features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the essential features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the turning-socket.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In carrying out the invention a suitable" stock 1 is provided, having a handle 2 at one end, the opposite end portion of the stock being bifurcated to form spaced members 3. Transverse bearings 4 are provided in the members 3 and are formed, preferably, by openings in these members. Mounted between the spaced members 3 and the stock 1 is a pinion 5, rotatable with a sleeve 6, the ends of which are mounted in the bearings 4: of said members 3. The pinion 5 is toothed upon the peripheral portion thereof and is adapted to be actuated by movement of the handle or stock 1 with reference thereto.
The turning device proper consists of a socket piece or member 7, one end of which is provided with a socket 8, which is of approximately square formation, so as to readily receive the head of a tuningpin, and the other end of the socket 7 is mounted in the sleeve 6 aforesaid. The socket member 7 is suitably secured in the sleeve 6, so as to rotate therewith when the pinion 5 is actuated. The socket member 7 is of a length suitable for the purposes of the invention and is adjustable in the sleeve6, so as to increase or decrease the distance between its outer end and the stock 1, so that the hammer may be accessible to the operator. A pin or key 9 is utilized to attach the socket member 7 to the sleeve 6, said pin extending transversely through the end of the socket member opposite that in which the socket 8 is provided and through the sleeve 6, thereby affording interlocking means between the sleeve and the socket member, effectively preventing displacement of the latter from the former and keying the same together. The socket member 7 is provided with a plurality of transverse openings 10, through which the pin 9 may pass, and the member 7 may be adjusted by insertion of the pin 9 into an ascertained opening of the series of openings 10 above mentioned.
The stock 1 of the device is of tubular formation, and mounted in said stock is a-sliding dog 11, one end of which is adapted to engage the pinion 5 and the opposite end projecting from the outer extremity of the hanoll-e 2 in order to admit of manipulation of the dog in the operation of the device. The outer extremity of the dog 11 is provided with a finger-piece 12 in the form of a loop, preferably, and when the handle 2 is grasped the finger or thumb of the operator is disposed in the finger-piece 12, so as to impart necessary movement to the dog 11 in actuating the pinion 5.
Describing the exact operation of the device, the socket member 7 is of course enreadily utilized for turning pins more or less -ing the pin, as necessary.

In moving the handle 2- in a reverse direction the finger-piece 12 may be lifted or pulled outwardly, so as to disengage the dog 11 from the pinion preparatory to further engagement in continuing the rotation of the socket member 7 in-the direction in which it is lirst actuated. An operator may become quite proficient in handling the device constituting the invention, the operation of the sliding dog with reference to the pinion in efiecting a continuous rotation of the socket member 7 in the same direction being very simple. A second finger-piece 15 is also preferably utilized for manipulating the dog carried by the handle, and this linger-piece is provided with a stem 16, which is attached to the dog 11 between the ends of the latter, and the stem is arranged in a transverse slot 17 formed in the handle and leading to the opening in which the dog 11 operates. The
slot 17 is of a suflicient size to admit of a certain amount of longitudinal movement of the linger-piece 15 along the handle, so as to engage or disengage the dog 11 with the pinion by which the socket member is operated. Either one of the finger-pieces 12 or 15 may be used, as found most convenient by the operator of the device.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a tuning-hammer, the combination of a hollow stock bifurcated at one end, a pinion mounted in the bifurcate portions of the stock, a sleeve mounted in hearings in the bifurcate portions of the stock and carrying the pinion, the socket member 7 provided with transverse openings 10 and mounted in the sleeve aforesaid, the pin 9 adapted to he passed through a selected one of the openings 10, admitting of adjustment of the socket member, and the sliding dog 11 mounted in the hollow portion of the stock and having one end cooperating With the pinion, said dog having an extremity thereof projected through an end of the stock and provided with a lingerloop for manipulation thereof.
