Description

DANIEL DEAN, OF BRIGHTON, MIG-HIGAN Letters .Patent No. 79,451 dated June 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GULTIVATOR-TOOTH.
'ditettthul numb tu it tlgssertiets ntmt mit mating tutti tigt time.
l TO ALL WHO IT MAY GONCERN Be it known that I, DANIEL DEAN, of Brighton, in theI county of Livingston, Vand State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Cultivator-Teeth; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and eorrect'description of the same, suicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and u'se the same, reference being hadv to` the accompanying drawings, which make part of this invention, and in which- Figure 1 isa perspective view of my improved reversible cultivator-tooth.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the same in line :c x, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the same when in opera-tion on very young corn, and
Figure 4 a like view when in operation on older corn.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several drawings and figures.
.The object of this invention is to construct a cultivator-tooth, that by merely turning on its standard, it
eq', may be used for either throwing up small hills on young corn-plants or making the hills larger for grownones.
,y In' order to accomplish this, I construct a doublepointed curved tooth, A, of steel or other suitable material, with two sides, B C, which form an obtuse angle in relation towards each other, the side being considerably narrower than side C. D is the holt-hole in the centre of the length of the toot-h and in the angle where K sides B and C meet, through which bolt-hole passes the bolt by means of which the tooth' is secured to its standard, the bolt passing through the latter, and being secured by a nut or in any other suitable way, always permitting it to be loosened to allow the tooth to be turned. E F represent the two `points of the tooth.
In fig. 3 the tooth is shown attached to the standard in position to throw up small hills on young plants, thepoint F being in the ground, and side B operating against the plants. By merely loosening the screw on the standard, the toothLmay be reversed so as to have a position as shown in iig. 4, the point E now being in the ground and the side C operating in throwing up large hills around the older plants.
By means of employing thisstooth the same lcultivator-frame will do, for early and later cultivating of corn;A without the necessity of changing one set of teeth for another.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe reversible cultivator-tooth A, when constructed substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
