JOHN 11.. DAVEY, OF ROCKFORD ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 79,450, dated Jwie 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATOR.
TO WHOM IT MAY .CQNOERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. DAVEY, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making -a part of the specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a top view.
Figure 2 represents a vertical sectional view,
In both figures- A is the axlc-tree.
B ]3 ,.a, frame securely fastened to axle-tree.
C .C, tooth-frame, suspended from frame B B by v I D D, standards attached to frame C 'O, and pierced at different parts, 0? d, so that the height of the toothframe may be regulated.
c c c, sockets for teeth.
E E, pins to-fasten the standards to frame B B.
F F, chains connecting forward end of tooth-frame with axle-tree G G G, teeth of cultivator.
gg g, rods connecting teeth with frame.
- H, standard attached to rear bar of upper frame, mortised at upper end to receive K.
I, standardattached to axle-tree.
K, le'ver, having its fulcrum in upper part offstandard H, and-playing through standard I.
K, chain'connecting lever with tooth-frame.
M, pole or tongue.
N, drivcrs seat, fastened to axle-tree.
and operation;
I first make my wheels, L L, and connect them by a strong axle-wee end attach to it a pole or tongue for draught, and a drivers seat, substantially-as in the drawing. To'this, on the upper surface, firmly attach a frame, BBB 13, substantially of the shape and proportions represented in the drawing. I then make another frame, 0 C, C C, substantially as represented, and in sockets c c 0 insert the upper end of the rods g g g of the teeth, which are so arranged that the teeth in the fore bar of the frame will be opposite the middle of the space between the hinder teeth. 7 I i This frame I fasten, by chain F F, to the rear side of the. axle-treefA. The after part of it is suspended from the upper frame by pins E E, which pass through theends of the upper frame, and'through'the standards 'D'D, andare easily-drawn out. Each standard is pierced at different points, so' that the tooth-frame may be raised or lowered at pleasure, thus regulating the depth at which the teeth will cut into the earth. I also sus pend the tooth-frame by a,cliain, K', to' the end of a,lever, K, arranged as in the drawings,-thc front end of which is near the drivers seat, so that he may press it dowh when occasion requires, taking the teeth outof the Toenabl other's skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describeits construction earth, and again, by letting it go, returning the teeth to the earth, into which they will be forced by the forward movement of the cultivator.
The teeth I make of the shape of a diamond, or of an ellipse, with thelower end drawn out to a point.
The advantages I'claim for my invention are, first, its extreme simplicity, which makes it inexpensive, andnot liable to get out of order; second, the ease with which it may be backed, as'it is not necessary to lift the teeth from the ground, as byits construction they yield tothe backward motion; third, the readiness with which it mhybe turned, as'the teeth may easily be raised; fourth, by the shape of the teeth, and the. rods connected with them, any obstruction will be easily thrown aside, or, if too'firm to be moved, will gently press the teeth to one side, instead of breaking them; fifth, the ease with which it is managed by the driver, who may control it without leaving his seat; the reins may be fastened to the front bar of the upper frame, when not necessarily in his hands sixth, the facility with which the depth of cultiyation may be regulated, by means of the standard D D and pins E E.
Hzwing now explained its construction and operation, I will proceed to state what I claim as my invention,
' and desire to secure by Letters Patent.-
I claim the frames 13 and O, thestandcrds D D, pins E, the chains F F, the lever K, the chain K, all
constructed, combined, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN H. DAVEY.
