DAVID C. RUTH, OF HALSTEAD, KANSAS.
SEPARATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,425, dated July 11, 1905.
Application filed September 16, 1904. Serial No. 224,723.
To all whmn it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID (J. RUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Halstead, in the county of Harvey and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to milling machinery for separating straw, chaff, dirt, and the like from grain after being threshed.
The invention is designed to simplify the construction, minimize the cost, and reduce the size and weight of machinery devised for the purpose aforesaid without impairing or detracting in the least from its efliciency and capacity.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for efiecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof about on the line w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3- is a central longitudinal section of a separator embodying the invention. Fig. 4 is a plan section of the machine on the line 1/ g of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a modification. Fig. 6 is a rear view of the machine illustrated in Fig. 1.
common in machinery of this class and is des.
Fig. 7 is a detail view, on a larger scale. of a portion ignated at 3. At one end of the machine is located the threshing mechanism, which may be of any make and, as shown, is of the undershot type and comprises a toothed cylinder 4 and toothed concave 5, the latter having spaces or openings between the teeth to provide ready escape for the grain in the manner well understood. A deflecting-board 6 is located below the concave 5 and receives the grain and directs it into a trough 7, arranged transversely of the machine and below the body 1 thereof. A separating-chamber 8 is arranged in the rear of the threshing mechanism and is in communication therewith, so as to receive the straw and loose grain carried thereby. The separating-chamber 8 is vertically arranged, and its lower portion is in communication with the trough 7 and the threshing mechanism, whereas its upper portion is either in direct connection with the dis charge or with means for effecting further separation. chamber 8 is inclined forwardly and downward] y toward the trough 7 to direct the grain received thereon into said trough. This bottom 9 is made removable to admit of access being readily had to the separating-chamber 8 and the threshing mechanism. The front wall 10 is adjustable to admit of varying the size of the chamber between the front and rear walls thereof. The rear wall 11 is preferably vertically arranged and comprises a series of inclined surfaces 12, which assist materially in the separation of the grain from the straw and other material.
An air-trunk 13 is located below the threshing mechanism and is closed at its top side by means of the deflecting-board 6,which results in contracting the height or depth of the space from front to rear, said space opening into the separating-chamber 8 at a point adjacent to the trough 7 and opposite to the inclined bottom 9. As a result of locating the air-trunk 13 in the manner specified the blast of air discharged therefrom is directed across the trough 7 and across the discharge 14, leading from the threshing mechanism into said separating-chamber, with the result that chaff, light stuff, and straw are carried upward The bottom 9 of the separatingthrough the chamber 8 and the grain permitted l ing two fans and a corresponding number of air-passages the pressure within the air-trunk is uniform and the dischargeof air therefrom is of equal force throughout its length, thereby subjecting every portion of the threshed material to a like action. The straw and material from the separating-chamber 8 may pass out through pipes 20 at each side of the machine or by delivery upon an endless carrier 21.
A longitudinal trough 22 is in communication with the transverse trough 7 and is in communication at its rear end with an elevator 23, by means of which the grain received in the trough 7 is carried upward and delivered into the recleaner 24, which may.
consist of a shoe of ordinary construction and adapted to receive vibratory movement from a shaft 25, with which it has eccentric or crank connection. The grain from the recleaner or separating-shoe 24 is discharged into a transverse trough 26 and is moved laterally therein by screw conveyer 27 and is taken up by an elevator 28 and conveyed to the required point of discharge. A screw conveyer 29 operates in the trough 22, and a double screw conveyer 30 is arranged to operate in the trough 7, so as to move the grain from opposite end portions of the trough toward the center. To materially assist in the separation of the grain, fans 31 are located at each side of the machine, and their casings 32 are in communication with the upper portion of the separating-chamber 8 and the inner ends of the discharge-pipes 20.
The several operating parts are suitably connected so as to be driven from a common source of power, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the construction shown in Fig. 5 it is proposed to arrange the elevator 23 at one side of the machine and to have it discharge upon the recleaner, thereby greatly simplifying the construction and admitting of the straw being carried off by means of the endless conveyer 21, which may be composed of plates and slats. The same arrangement is employed in connection .with the dischargespouts 20. The central arrangement of the elevator 23 is preferred, as it is less bulky and the weight is uniformly distributed upon the frame and truck.
Air pas-' The inclined surfaces 12 extend transversely of the wall 11 and are formed, preferably, by pressed portions of a sheet-metal strip. These surfaces defiect'fiying grain downward.
From'the foregoing it will be observed that the separation of the grain from the straw after being threshed is effected solely by pneumatic action, thereby dispensing with a great mass of machinery and enabling the separator to be of a minimum weight, length, and the separation to be effected close to the threshing mechanism, which is of great advantage. As a result less power is required to be expended for a given amount of grain compared with that required for operating like machinery as commonly constructed. Moreover, the working parts being reduced the running expenses are diminished because of the number of parts dispensed with and the resultant friction obviated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is.
