ROOFING MATERIAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,206, dated July 11, 1905.
Application filed November 22, 1904. Serial No. 233,908.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT R. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing Material, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in roofing materials; and the main object is the provision of a flexible roofing which primarily consists of a body material covered or coated with a material impervious to moisture. To attain these objects, I employ a sheet of woven material and combine with the same a filler composition made of ingredients hereinafter set forth and, if so desired, with felting or paper; but I would have it understood that the main object is'to provide a woven material saturated or coated with a filling composition.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a portion of the roofing embodying my invention. Fig. Q is a similar view of a modified form, and Eig. 3 is a similar view of another modified form.
Referring to the drawings, my flexible roofing consists, as shown in Fig. l, of a strip B of woven material, preferably burlap, the same being located centrally and surrounded upon both sides with a coating O of my filler composition, the ingredients of which will hereinafter appear.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings a modified form is shown in which I provide a central strip Gr of burlap or woven material surrounded or covered on both sides by means of the filler H, the said filler being coated with a layer K of sand.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, D designates the woven material, E the upper coating of filler, and E the lower strip of paper, the paper and woven material being secured together by means of my improved filler.
It willthus be seen that I provide a roofing in which the central portion or base consists of a woven material, such as burlap, the said burlap or woven material being made impervious to moisture by means of my improved filler, which at the'same time is held in the sheet by the burlap and greatly lengthens the life of the burlap when in use, the said filler protecting the same when in use.
My improved filler consists of elastic baking japan, asphaltum, and rosin. In producing my improved roofing this filler composition is baked on the burlap in a furnace and is mixed about in the following proportions: elastic baking japan, forty per cent.; asphaltum, fifty per cent., and rosin, ten per cent.
proved roofing to provide a roofing which is not easily torn and which when placed upon the roof greatly outlasts any of the wellknown forms of roofing-felts, as the burlap prevents the same from being easily torn, while the filler provides a thick coating which will wear a number of years without the necessity of painting the roof, as is now the case.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that I provide a flexible roofing of this character which is the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness, which is therefore thoroughly eflicient and practical in use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A flexible roofing material, consisting of a central section of woven fabric saturated and incased by amoisture-proof material consisting of elastic baking japan, asphaltum and rosin.
2. Aflexible roofing consisting of a central section of burlap saturated and incased by a moisture-proof material consisting of elastic baking japan, asphaltum and rosin.
3. A flexible roofing consisting of acentral section of woven fabric saturated and incased by a moisture-proof material consisting of elastic baking japan forty per cent., asphaltum fifty per cent., and rosin ten per cent.
l. A flexible roofing consisting of a central section of burlap saturated and incased by a moisture-proof material consisting of elastic It has been my object in producing this imbaking japan forty per cent., asphalturn fifty baked thereon elastic baking japan, asphaiturn per cent., and rosin ten per cent. and rosin.
5. A flexible roofing consisting of a central In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in section ot' Woven fabric which has saturated presence of two Witnesses.
5 and baked thereon elastic baking japan, as- ROBERT R. WALKER.
phalturn and rosin. Witnesses:
6. A flexible rooting consisting of a central Ross MERCER,
section of burlap, which has Saturated andr L. W. CARMAN.
