Application lileil March 13, 1905. Serial lilo. 249,895.
To all whom 11/ ntrtg (some/era:
lie it known that l, t im iii. tlao'r, a citizen oi the United States, residingat llarrir ion Valley, in the county oli Potter and tltate ol' l eni'rsylvania, have invei'ited certain new and usel'ul improvements in llaihead-Switches; and i do declare the followingto he a full, clear, and exact description oi? the inw-n'ition, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in railway-switches; and it consists in certain novel 'l'eatures ol construction, ernnbination, and arrangeinent of parts, as will be hercinafter more l'ully described.
The object oi the invention is to provide a simple, inex 'iensive, and el'licient device ol' this character by means oi which iro s and guard-rails may be dispensed with, so that it will be impossible for any object to beeonieso tigl'itly wedged between the rails as to derail the train or cause a wreck.
The above and other objects, which will appo: as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by means the construction illustrated in the amompanying drawil'igs, in which---- Figure l is a top plan view oi a railroadswitch constructed in accordance with my invention, the two positionsol the switch points or rails being indicated in Full and dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 2;) is a detail longitudinal sectioi'ial view taken on the line 3 in Fig. i.
lltct'erring' more particularly to the draw ings, A A denote the rails of the main track; l3 B, the rails oi the side track; (I l, the stationary switchnails, which have at their ends pairs of movable switch-rails U l) and F E. 'llhe inner ends of the switch rails or points are loosely connected, as shown at l, or in any other suitable manner to the ends ol the stationary switch-rails "U and the pair of switcl'i-rails D lil, which are moved toward and From the 1nain-tracl rails A A, are conne ted by two bars .3 and 3. The other pair olt' n'1o\ 'ablc switch-rails it E coact with the point 5, formed by the intersection of the rails it and A, and are cormected by two bars 5 and T. The points ol the rails l land it are moved toward and from the point 5 by means ol the diamond-sliaped lever B, which is piv-- oted at one ol its ends., as at 9, upon one of the cross-ties which support the traclvrails and has its other end pivoted, as it 10, to thecrossbar l'. The pivot El is strengthenml by a bracket plate ll, which is secured upon an adjacentcross-tie. The dialnoml-shaped lever 8 is operated by means of twolinlo-i 12, which have one of their cm s col'ineeted to said lever and lhoir opposite endseonnmtted to thearms iii of bell-cranl levers I l, which are pivoted at their angle, as at 15, beneath the ends oi a lllltttllftilrlllltiitl it"), which issecured uponone ol' the cross-ties. 'lhe opposite ends l'i o! the liell-cranl levers ii are pivotally eonneeted to the cross-"bar ll, which extends ontwardly to one side oi the traelt and is eonnectijal to a suitable operatilnay-lever l8, pivoted upon a stand This o mrating-leve and switch may be of any \\"elll\'nown or preferred constrnetion.
V'ihen the parts oi the drwico are in the position shown in full lines in ll ig. l ol thedrawine's, the movable switch-rails l) and it aline with the rails A, and i l, so that the main track is open; but when the parts are shilted to the position shown in dotted lines in said lienre by operating the lever .18 the rails l7) and i l aline with the rails A, C, and B, so as to open the side track. l-ly means of thiseon structioiii it will be seen that all oi the movable switch-rails are moved sinmltaneonsly and that .1 may dispense with the use ol :lrogs and guard-rails at the point 5. Owing to this construction it will be also noted that it will be impossible for any ohject to become wedged between the rails, so as toeause the derailmcmt 0| :1 train. and hence a wreck.
From the foregoing (.lescription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawin the eoi'istrnction and mieration ol' the invcntion will be readily mulerstimd without rcqnirine' a more (-BXLOllLlt-(l explanation.
Various changes in the lorm, promirtioi'i, and the minor details ol construction may be resorted to without departing, from the prineiple or sacrificingthis invention.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, anddesire to secn re by Letters Patent, is
1. A railway-switch comprising converging statioizary switch-rail members respectively in line with one rail of the main and one rail of t e side track, a mo able switch-point at each end of each of the said stationary switchmembers, a conneetingdiar between the movable switch-poilits, at the divergingends ct the stationary switch -rail members, re versely-disposed bell cranks connected to said comiccting-bar, means to operate said bar, the switch-points connected thereto and thebellcranks, a bar connecting the mo 'able switchnoints at the converging ends of the said stationary switch-rail members, a pivoted element in the angle between thelast-mentioned movable switcl1peints, and links respectively any of the advantages of l l connecting said pivoted element at points on opposite sides of its pivot to the said bellcranks.
2. The combination with a main track and a side track, of stationary switch-rails, a pai r of movable switch-rails at each end of said stationary switch-rail, bars connecting the rails of each of said pairs, a diamond-shaped lever pivotally connected to one of said bars, l; ell-cra.nk levers pivotally connected to the other of said bars, links connectii'ig said hell- I crank levers and said (llitlllOlKl SllllXd levers,
and means for moving one ol said bars to s:- n'niltaneonsly actuate the said pairs of switchrails.
in testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing" witnesses.
JILL F. Cl'UJY.
