ASSlG-NOR TU AMERICAN SUPPLIES CMPANY, OF BOSTGN, MAEAUHUSETTS, A URPORATION OF MASSAUHUSETT SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,988, dated July 4, 190V., Application tiled February 23, 1904, Serial No. 194,638.
Be it known that l., llnwim` (.lImNnnnn, a citizen oit the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county ot lllvlnouth, State ot Massachusetts, have invented ar certain new and useful Improvement in Forms for Treeing, &c., Shoes, ot which the 'following is a specitication, reterence being had therein to the accoinlninying drawings.
The invent-ion consists in a 'toi-n1 o't novel and improved character and construction iter use `in supporting shoes while being treed or ironed and during the pertornianee ot the like ope -ations.
'lhe invention consists, inore especially, in a` torni tor the purpose stated charaeteriz/.ed by having a seit-adjusting toot portion possessing capacit),Y to adapt itself autonlatically to the size oit the shoe which is applied to the torni, whereby one 'torni oi a given style is rendered capable ol being employed in connection with various sizes et shoes ot such style.
rin embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows in side elevation a torni containing the said enibodinient ot the invention. Fig. 2 shows separately7 in side elevation the ankle or leg and heel portions ot the forni. Fig. 3 is an end elevation et the ankle or leg and heel portions shown in lti 2. Fig. Llis a top view oit the said ankle or leg and heel portions. Fig. 5 is a view showing, detached, the toot portion in loiigitudinal section. Fig. is a view in vertical section on line (l in Fig. et.
li'laving reference to the drawings, the ankle or leg portion (hereinafter ternied leg portion 7 or leg-piece 9) et the torni which is shown in the d 1awings is designated l. '.lhe heel portion, which is connected with the said leg portion, is designated 2. At 3 the 'tore part or foot portion. The said tore part or toot portion comprises a shank portion, a toe portion, and an instep portion, and in order that it may constitute a support and hacking 'tor the upper of a shoe suitable tor enabling the operations ot treeing and iron ing to be properlyy pertornied the said tore part or toot portion is inade with a smooth and unitorin unbroken exterior surface. In practice the leg portion will be titted iior aplilication and connection to a support in a trtwing-maehine in anyr usual or aplnfoved inauner.
ln carrying the invention into etiect the toot portion 3 is 'torlned separately troni the Vleg and heel portions and Vis in sliding' connection with the leg-pieee in a inauner perinit'tingl nlovclnent oi the Ytoot portion in the direction o'li the length thereot with relation to the leg and heel portions. lin the present enlbodiinent ot the invention the top of the 'toot portion and the end ot the leg portion tit together along the line i-, Fig. l. 'lhe manner and ineans ot connecting the toot portion with the Vleg portion so as to permit the toot portion to have the relative. nievenient which is retorted to above iin the direction which has been stated may vary in practice.. l have shown a detachable connection comprising a pair of elongated hooks 5 5, which in the present .instance are torlned on a plate that is applied to one et the parts, herein the leg portion, the other oli the parts, herein the t'oot portion, being longitudinally slotted at (3, Fig. Ytor the reception ot the said hooks and having pins 7 7, which extend across the slot in position to be engaged by the hooks. Then the hooks are entered within the slot, as in ltig. l, theyY serve to hold the parts troni lateral displaeeuwnt with relation to each other. rlhe engagelnent oi the hooks with the pins prevents the toot portion troni becoming disconnected troni the leg portion until the foot portion is operated to disengage the pins trein the hooks. The length ot the hooks is suilieient Vto pei-init a considerable extent ot inovenieut o't the 'toot portion in the direction oit its length before the pins pass beyond the ilree extremities of the hooks.
For the purpose ol" rendering the toot portion auton'latically adjustable in the direction of its length to enable the same to tit different sizes of shoes which may be applied to the form, I combine With the foot portion and With the remainder of the form a spring or springs acting ivith a tendency to impel the foot portion in the direction of its length With relation to the said remainder. rl`he manner of applying the spring or springs and of causing the tension of the same to act with a tendency to extend the foot portion in the direction of its length may vary in practice Without involi'fing a departure from the principles of the invention. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention I employ a pair of oppositely-located springs S S, Fig. (3, and in connection therewith a pair of pins or plungers 9 E). The said springs and pins or plungers are contained in holes or chambers which are formed for the reception thereof in one of the portions of the form, the spring acting With a tendency to project the pins or plungers from the said holes or chambers and the outer ends of the said pins or plungers engaging with a proximate surface of the relatively movable portion of the form. Herein the holes or chambers are formed in t-he heel portion 2 and the outer ends of the pins or plungers act against the rear end of the foot portion In the use of the invention, the parts of the form being assembled in proper condition, a shoe requiring to be treed or ironed is applied in usual manner to the form, and then the required operation is performed thereon. The shoe having' been slipped upon the exterior of the form, the spring or springs will operate to extend the foot portion of the form so as to cause the same to occupy properly the foryvard portion of the interior of the shoe. The tension of the spring or springs will be proportioned in degree to cause the foot portion of the form to tit snugly in place Within the forivard portion of the shoe Without straining or stretching the latter. The extent of the relative movement which is permitted the foot portion with reference to the leg and heel portions is sufficient to enable the form to accommodate itself to a range comprising several different sizes of slices. The number of sizes to yvhich the form may be thus adapted may vary in practice.
lllhile in some cases the foot portion may be permanently connected with the leg portion in such manner as to permit relative movement in effecting self-adjustment to accommodate different sizes of shoes` as aforesaid, I prefer to apply the foot portion to the leg portion in a manner enabling the foot portion to be detached from the leg portion when desired. The object of this is to enable a foot portion suitable for use in connection with a given range of sizes of a cert-ain style to be replaced by a foot portion suitable for use in connection vvith another range of sizes of the said style. The detachability also permits a foot portion of one style to be replaced by a foot portion of a different style.
that I claim as my invention isl. A treeing-form comprising a leg-piece with connected heel portion, a longitudinally-movable fore part consisting of a` shank portion, a toe portion, and an instep portion, and having' a smooth and uniform unbroken exterior surface suitable for the performance of treeing and ironing operations, and a spring operating With a tendency to extend the said fore part in the direction of the length of the latter relative to the said legpiece and its heel portion.
A treeing-form comprising a leg-piece with connected heel portion, a fore part in readily-detachable connection ivith said leg piece. longitudinally movable with relation thereto consisting of a shank portion, an instep portion, and a toe portion, and having a smooth and uniform unbroken exterior surface suitable for the performance of treeing and ironing operations, and a spring operating with a tendency to extend the said fore partv in the direction of the length of the latter relative to the said leg-piece and its heel portion.
3. A treeing-form comprising a leg-piece with connected heel, a fore part having a sliding tit upon the said leg-piece, a plate applied to one of said parts, a pin or pins applied to the other thereof and in sliding engagement with the said plate,I and a spring operating with a tendency to extend the fore part in the direction of the length of the latter upon the said leg-piece.
e. A treeing-form comprising a leg-piece with connected heel, a, fore part having a sliding tit upon the said leg-piece, one or more elongated hooks applied to one of the said parts, a corresponding number of pins applied to the other part and having' sliding engagement With the said hook or hooks, and a spring operating with a tendency to extend the fore part in the direction of the length of the latter upon the said leg-piece.
n In testimony ivhereof I atlix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
