Application filed January 8, 190 i. Serial No. 188,247.
To H/ZZ 1 071,011), it In/my concern:
lie i t known that we, (hurries A. CARPENTER and Jenn A. Dowktnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of llay and State ofli' ll lichigan, have invented certain new andv useful improvements in \Vashing-lvlachines5 and we do hereby de clare the :t'ollowing to be a liull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention is a wishing-machinc.
The improvements consist .in certain de vices, their combination and the equivalents then-30f, as will be more fully set forth in the speei iicatio n The objects of the invention are to pro vide a simple and inexpensive washing-machine that not liable to get out of order, and to so arrange its interior mechanism. that there will be small liability oi. tearing or inj uring the clothes being washed. lvl eai'is also provided for effectually draii'iing the tub.
l'tejt'erence is had. to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the washing-machine with the cover partly raised. l 2 a plan view of the tub with its top removed. Fig. 3 a vertical. sectional elevation through the middle oil the tub.
its is clearly shown in the drawings, the device consists in a polygonal casing or tub l, preferably made of sheet metal, such as sheet-zii'ic and preferably formed with six sides. The bottom is provided with a chanincl. 12', extending aroin'id its periphery and formed by depressing the metal of the bottom to term a continuous downwardly-projecting rib, as shown in ldi s. 2 and This rib not only strengthens and. stii'l ens the bottom, but also serves as a channel by which to drain the tub through the dischargespout 1." into which the channel 1 leads. Diagonally arranged across the bottom of the tub :trom corner to corner are wooden slats or strips forming a spider 2, which strengthens the bottom the slats serving stationary ribs against which the clothes are dashed by means oi the revolving dasher The ends oi. the slats are titted to and pressed. tightly down in to the (an-hers of the tub, the pressure due to elasticity oi? the metal corners serving to hold tl i spider liirinly in place, andv the spider serving the additional. purpose oil? preventing the bottom from buc- .klingand. keeping the thinmetal shell. or tub stretchedv taut and preserving its shape. The top -Lloi the tub is provided with. a hinged. cover l, and through the cover is passed a downwardly-projccti1.1g shat; 5, to the upper end. of which is secured a crank 5, and lo the lower end. is lixed the dasher 3, by which the clothes are agitated. The dasher so arranged that it can revolve through a complete revolution.
lx ear the extremities ol each. oil? the slats in the corners of the tub are loosely mounted. in sockets 2 or otherwise upright spindles (3, which are nrelierably oli polygonal. cross-section, usually stpiare. The upper ends of the spindles (3 are revolubly mounted in recesses 4t" :liornicd in the cover -l-.
It is found in practice that the nutterials being washed. strike the spindles t) and. are thoroughly agitatei'l. The spindles are free to turn. under the rubbing action. oi? the clothes, and thus avoid tearing or iiriuring them.
\Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters .lhttent, is as follows:
in a washing-machine the combination with a polygonal tub 'liorineifl of sheet metal and having a peripheral rib 'lorinod in its bottom by depressing the metal thereof, and having a discharge-ontlet; a spider ili'orlned oft diagonally-arranged slats extending from, corner to corner of said tub and secured to the bottom thereof by pressure of the sides of said tub; said slats having sockets near their outer ends; vertical spindles revolubly mounted in. said. sockets; a revolnble dasher and means for operating said. dasher.
Ilfn testimony whereot we ai'lix our signatures in. presence of two witnesses.
