Vcl`he purpose ot the invention is to provide a very silnple, durable, and ell'ective construction ot rotary engine, and one which will be econoniic in the use oit stealn.

Theworling surtaces l2" and 1&3 ot the said heads l2 and l?) are practically straight and 'tace in opposite directions, as `is also shown in `Fig. 2, the working surtaces l2" ot the head l2 being substantially on a line with the axial center ot the piston, while the working surface '13 otI the opposing head [Si is at one side ot the axial center ot said piston, or that side in direction ot which the said working surtace l-l taires. The opposite surtaces ot the said heads 1"2 and lll are curved or inclined, as is shown in Fig. 2, except the peripheral portions ot the heads adjacent to the working surtaces '12 and 13, which peripheral sur- 'iaces are closely fitted to the inner surface ot the casing it, as is also shown in Fig. 2.
The `piston B is provided with two trunnions 'ist and l5, extending 'troni the center at opposite sides. These trunnions are tilbular, and the chainbers therein are designated, respectively, as il and l5, extending` sonie distance into the body portion ot the piston l, as is illustrated in ltig. l. The trunnion l5 is shown shorter than the opposing trun nion lst, and said trunnion l5 passed through the hul) 10L ot the casing it and serves as a bearing Ytor said hub, the outer end ot the trunnion 'l5 being mounted to turn in a bearing lt, supported troni a base 29 by a suitable standard i7. The trunnion ll is pivoted at its outer end in a suitable bearing 18, supiriortcd by standards lt), connected with the said base 2t), and the trunnion Vlslserves as a bearing 'tor the hub .'10 oit the casing it pulley 20, which also a driving-pulley, is secured in any suitable or approved inanner on the trunnion 1.4i-, and tlie outer t'ace oit the driving-pulley ll is provided with a preferably conical recess 'llfhe inner tace of the pulley 20 provided with a siniilar recess QQ, as best shown in Fig. l. These recesses 2l and 22 in the pulleys 11i and 20 are adapted to receive tlanges 21, formed at the periphery of a reversingpulley 23, mounted to slide freely on the trunnion 11, the said trunnion turning freely in said pulley, and when a flange of the reversing-pulley is in trictional engagement with the recessed portion ot the pulley 20, as shown in positive lines in Fig. 1, the pulley 20 is held stationary, while the pulley 11 is tree trom engagement with the reversing-pulley, so that the casing A can turn while the piston B is held stationary. Vhen, however, the direction ot' rotation is to be reversed, the reversing-pulley 2.) is carried trom engagement with the driving-pulley Q0 and lis brought into frictional engagement with the L driving-pulley 11, thus holding said pulley 11 stationary and likewise the casing A, permitting the piston B to revolve, thus reversing the driving direction of the engine.
The reversing-pulley 23 is attached to the end portions or' a yoke 25 through the medium of screws 2G or their equivalents, as is shown in Fig. The said yoke is provided with a downwardly-extending centrally-located arm 2T, which arm is secured to a sleeve 2S, mounted to turn on a suitable support at the base 29, as is shown in Fig. 5, and the lower end ot a hand-lever BO is cured to the said sleeve 2S and is also preterably secured to one end portion otl the said yoke The lever 30 is provided with a thumb-latch 31, adapted to engage with a rack 32, secured to the base 29, as is shown in Figs. 1 and -The reversiiig-pulley is thus moved by means of the lever 3() and is held in adjusted position by means of the thumb-latch 31 and the rack 32.
Two barriers D are employed, located within the casing A opposite the working surfaces 1'2" and 13 of the piston-heads 12 and 13, as is illustrated in Fig. Q. These barriers D, when in working position, engage with the peripheral surface ot the piston B, as also shown in Fig. 2, and they have sliding' movement in grooves 3Q, produced in the sides or heads ot the casing A, as is shown in Fig. 1. The said barriers are adapted to slide into and to enter housings 35, which are located over openings 33 in the periphery of the casing A, through which openings the barriers pass. The housing is provided with grooves 31, forming guides for the said barriers. Rods are secured to the outer longitudinal surfaces ot` the barriers D, as is particularly shown in Fig. 1, and these rods extend out in a steam-tight manner through glands 3T in the outer end portions et' the housings 35, and springs 38 are coiled around the rods 3G, having bearing upon the barriers and against the glands, as is also shown in Fig. 1. rllhus when a piston-head passes a barrier the barrier is forced up into its housing, placing the springs 38 under tension., and as soon the head passes the barrier brought into action is torced by its controlling-springs again to working position in the casing A, and in order that there shall be but little noise or thumping when this action takes place each housing 2:35 is provided with a relief-valve 39 ot any description.
Each head ot` the piston B is provided with two ports-namely, a supply-port 10 and a relief-port 11. The supply-ports 10 connect with the chamber 15" ot' the trunnion 15 and connect with the steam-chamber C at the working surfaces of the piston-heads, while the exit-ports 11 connect with the steamchamber C at a point back of the working surtaces ot the piston-heads and also connect with the chamber 11 in the trunnion 11. Steam is supplied to the chamber 15n ot the trunnion 15 through the medium of a pipe '12, provided with a suitable valve 11 and connecting' with a main supply-pipe 13. VWhen the valve 11 is opened, the steam will enter directly into the chamber 15 of the trunnion 15 and will tind an exit into the steam-chamber C in the casing A through the ports 10, and it the reversing-pulley 23 is in engagement with the driving-pulley 20, as is shown by positive lines in Fig. 1, the piston will be held stationary and the steam will act upon the barriers D to force the casing to revolve. It it is desired to reverse the engine, the reversing-pulley 23 is carried to an engagement with the driving-pulley 11, thus locking the casing, and the steam will then act upon the working surfaces of the piston-heads and will torce the piston to revolve, which it will at such time be :tree to do. The exhaust-steam leaves the steamchamber C through the ports 11 and escapes through the medium of the chamber 11n in the trunnion 11. It will be understood that the engine may be compounded by using the steam from the exhaust-chamber of one engine to supply the supply-chamber of another engine.
A eut-ott is employed in connection with this engine, and this cut-ott' is shown in Figs. 1 and It is a standard eut-of-that is, is not variable-and in the form of cut-ott illustrated an annular groove 17 is made in the outer tace of the trunnion 15 of the piston and a port 1S is produced in the inner tace ot. the hub 10a of the casing A, the said port 1S, for example, being about one-quarter ot the interior diameter ot the said hub, as is shown in Fig. 8. An opening 19 is produced in the trunnion 15 of the piston, which opening is always in communicationwith the chamber 15a of the trunnion 15, but only at times connects with the port 1S. At such time only is steam supplied to the chamber 13a, and consequently to the inlet-ports 1() of the piston. Yllaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by ALetters Patent 1. in a rotary engine, a, easing mounted to revolve and, lrnovided with tubular hubs, a piston mounted to revolve witl'rin the easing and having trunnions which enter the hubs o'lI the easing, a dri ving-pulley seeured to one ot the hubs ot the easing, a second drivingpulley secured to one oit the trunnions ot the piston, and means 'tor locking either ot said pulleys stationary.
